What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Oh, that one was a 9/10 for me, I absolutely loved it! Patti Lupone, Kathryn Hahn, and Joe Locke are just a joy to watch. Probably one too many Pagan in jokes for your average viewer though, I'm kind of surprised it got produced at all.

Grotesquery

An FX series about an alcoholic police captain trying to solve and catch a serial killer who cuts up and arranges the bodies in a quite grotesque manner, reminiscent of Catholic teaching.

Long on the police captain's problems and short on actual crime investigation.

I'm two and a half episodes in and I think I've had enough. Maybe it'll get better. Maybe the creepy Catholic priest is the real killer. But I'll never find out.

5/10

Se7en did it much better.

Kevin Can Go F**k Himself

I'd never heard of this series until yesterday. I gave it a shot and ended up binge watching the first six episodes. The only reason I didn't watch more is because I want it to last.

The main character partially lives in a sitcom world, which has all the same elements of something like Everybody Loves Raymond.

While in sitcom world, the show is shot the way most sitcoms are. The colors are bright, the characters are ridiculous, and there's a laugh track. Then, when the main character leaves the sitcom world, the lighting changes, the color changes----her world is gritty and real. What's especially interesting is that it shows how horribly abusive sitcom characters would be if put in a realistic light.

Prior to yesterday I'd never given this concept a single thought. The show is really engrossing, which makes it difficult to understand why it received so little support from Netflix. The only nitpick I have is that the pacing is a tad uneven, but it's a small criticism.

9/10

Everybody Loves Raymond.
Oh, I've noticed quite often how Raymond's wife actually responds to him with violence.

I wonder what would be thought of the show if the roles were reversed.
I don't want to give spoilers away, but I encourage you watch the show.

But in a traditional sitcom where physical violence were to be used against the wife? Yeah, that wouldn't go over very well at all.

Maniac

I'm not quite sure where it's going with it's story, but it's a weird, fun, yet somewhat disturbing watch. So far though, after four episodes, I'm really enjoying it.

Briefly, it's a sci-fi based show about fucked up people volunteering for futuristic pharmaceutical experiments that seem to also have a new age woo element. There are lots interesting twists and turns that make you wonder just what in the hell is going on.

Is that for me cuz I already watch it?

Breaking Amish (2012)
documentary series about 5 Amish (in their 20s) going to NYC.
The first episode is at home preparing to go, dealing with their families.
The threat of being 'shunned' seems tame and a little silly, compared to leaving scientology.
Two adoptees sounded a little bitter about being adopted into the Amish lifestyle.
No talk about why NYC or how to pay for it.
Their luggage looked brand new. Never used.
I suspect the producers sought them out and offered them the trip.
The episode ended with them leaving their houses, on foot.
Previews of next episode shows them at the airport, and arriving in Times Square.
The rest of the season will probably be 'fish-out-of-water' stories.

2nd episode: Spent a lot, and complaining about the prices of everything. But kept spending. Obviously not their money.
Favorite line: "I've got chickens. I sell eggs for a dollar a dozen. Back home I could sell you 50 dozen for what you paid for that one omelet." ($52 from room service.)
Apparently, the producers were trying to recreate the Anish tradition of rumspringa.
Rumspringa:
"Amish adolescents may engage in rebellious behavior, resisting or defying parental norms. In many cultures, enforcement may be relaxed, and misbehavior tolerated or overlooked to a degree. A view of rumspringa has emerged in popular culture that this divergence from custom is an accepted part of adolescence or a rite of passage for Amish youth."

I'm not going to rate it. It's a typical reality show. Whether you like it or not depends on your interest in the premise.

Wayne 8/10 Comedy

Sixteen year old Wayne sets out on a road trip from Massachusetts to Florida with his girlfriend Del to take back the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am that was stolen from his dying father by his ex and new boyfriend.
It's reminds me of an ABC After School Special but it's way better.

I've started Succession for a second time: I prefer rewatching an excellent show to watching a new but mediocre show. (My poor memory helps, as I've forgotten most of the details of a show I've only watched once.) I have decided that Succession is my second favorite TV series of all-time.

Wikipedia calls it a "satirical black comedy-drama." What does "black comedy" even mean? I think there are some long segments one could watch in isolation and not even realize it was satirical or "comedy." Movies that Wikipedia calls "black comedy" include Network, Dr. Strangelove, Fargo, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Don't Look Up, and In Bruges. I liked all those movies, so I guess black comedy is my genre!

I'm not sure exactly why I like Succession. I suppose the melodrama and extreme but almost believable characters just seem more interesting and engaging than a chase or fight, or clever police or criminals, or predictable romantic tale, etc.

I posted this yesterday and -- what a coincidence! -- here's what showed up on Google News today:

Why Murdoch’s succession case could be major blow to his rightwing legacy
Behind closed doors, Murdoch has been involved in a legal battle for control of the family’s media assets, pitching the mogul and Lachlan Murdoch, his political protege and heir apparent, against the patriarch’s three other oldest children.
...
“The trust was obviously rock-tight and the children had good lawyers,”
...
If this all sounds like an episode of Succession, spare a thought for the Murdochs. Astonishingly, the legal drama had been kicked off when Murdoch’s children watched an episode of the hit HBO show in which the fictional heir of the fictional media empire discussed their PR strategy in the event of the patriarch’s death “where the patriarch of the family dies, leaving his family and business in chaos”.

According to the Times, Elizabeth Murdoch’s lawyer wrote a “‘Succession’ memo” to the trust hoping to prevent fiction turning into reality. Ironically, the memo, and the legal challenge that followed, may have created just that.

Secret Level - Amazon prime videos. Short animations, around 20 minutes, based loosely on video games. They were very good. Schwarzenegger starred in one as a king out to conquer the world,(New World) and finds out he might not be the greatest at everything. Other games covered are Dungeons & Dragons, Space Marine 2, Sifu, Unreal Tournament, Crossfire, Pac-Man, and Armored Core (Keanu Reeves is in that one), and another 8 episodes coming.

Creature Commandos - A DC Comics animated series. Like their Harley Quinn series this is made for adults. Lots of swearing, violence, gore, some nudity, and pretty damn funny! The government agency that ran Suicide Squad (villains forced to do missions for the government or be executed) got in trouble and is no longer allowed to abuse humans like that...... so they now use a group that might not exactly count as human. My favorite part so far is the flashback for GI BOT, a robot barely showing signs of sentience, programmed to kill nazis.

Skeleton Crew - 9/10

This one has been called Goonies in space. A Star Wars series targeted at kids that is pretty good. Main character is a kid who daydreams about being a jedi. (no sign of any force ability) Living on what looks like an idyllic planet in the suburbs, but of course complains about how boring the place is and that it is nothing special. Of course he and several other kids end up in space, with no idea how to get back home, and we start to find out there are some secrets concerning their planet.

Much better job than The Bad Batch, which is also kinda targeted at kids, but the premise would have been a lot better as a gritty adult drama.

Watched the first episode. Haven't followed up on it but I intended to. Jude Law is one of my favorite actors.
