That is not to say that there won't be individual incidents of racism. There will be assholes that don't hire you because you have the wrong skin color. There will be assholes that don't hire you for various reasons that have nothing to do with your ability to do the job--and sometimes even with the backing of the government (religious organizations.) This only becomes an important factor when a substantial percentage of the employers take this position.

It's important regardless of how much or little there is of it. Even if racism went into full remission, it would still be something to stay weary of. It's a category error people are prone to falling into, and anyone can, and the racism can be against any race, and even be seen as somehow a good thing, as both Koy and Ruby have demonstrated.

The thing is there are plenty of improper reasons people won't get hired. The effort you expend should be related to the size of the problem.
