Zbigniew Brzezinski is dead

I have no info, but I would not be surprised if there might be something similar to what the US pulled with Saddam and Kuwait (hinting that we were ok with his invasion) that Barbos is referring to.

Now I will look for the info...

I was wrong, but interesting stuff

US started funding freedom fighters (Bin Laden&Co) before Soviet Invasion, not after. They were hoping Soviets will invade, and they did.

Brzezinski has been a fixture of US foreign policy for the most of the Cold War. And it seems his hate for soviets at least in the beginning was mostly personal. Think about that, half of the 20th century history could be linked to a personal grudge of a single man. Ok, I am exaggeration a little, but still.

So your entire argument is based on the premise that Russians are fucking idiots.

Who were the freedom fighters fighting?
Soviet friendly government. But that's not really important, what was important was that CIA created an impression that US wanted Afghanistan for themselves, USSR could not allow that to happen. In reality US wanted Afghanistan to be Russian "Vietnam" and they succeeded, but then of course 9-11 happened as a result.

Exactly. No surprise there. Neither is the Vietnam angle. It was in all the papers.

Not everything was in the papers. At least not in American papers. Zbignev admitted that only in 1998 in his book or something.
Russian papers in 1990s after USSR dissolution revealed that Soviets feared that US would place nukes in Afghanistan like they did earlier in Turkey. That was the real reason Soviets invaded Afghanistan.

So info couldn't have been in the papers because Brezezinski didn't admit til '99?

Funny, I distinctly remember reading it at the time. It was no secret. That B didn't cop to it is irrelevant.

Laughing Dog is right...
