Covid-19 miscellany

Trump Appointed Federal Judge says mask mandate on planes is out.

article said:
The decision Monday by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, also said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention improperly failed to justify its decision and did not follow proper rulemaking.

In her 59-page ruling, Mizelle said the only remedy was to vacate the rule entirely across the country because it would be impossible to end it for the limited group of people who objected in the lawsuit.
Failed to justify. Yes... pandemic... what pandemic?!

article said:
The mask requirement for travelers was the target of months of lobbying from the airlines, which sought to kill it. The carriers argued that effective air filters on modern planes make transmission of the virus during a flight highly unlikely.
Did they fail to justify that claim?

We have taken two dozen airline high level managers and put them on a plane next to dogs we just had eat several bags of cool ranch Doritos. Let's see how well those filters work at 30,000 ft.
In other words, back to the old days where Congress had to make the rules directly--a total disaster which is why they created non-political regulatory bodies to handle it.

I think some folks just have a mask fetish. That’s cool, just wear your mask. Or stay home. You have choices.

No. Some folks have a fetish about living.

Rogan called masks MAGA hats for libs.
Lol, Rogan. Bringing out the intellectual big guns, eh? lol.
He wasn't wrong. See a person wearing a mask while driving alone? Check for the Biden sticker on the bumper.
You're misinterpreting the situation. Earlier today I was one of those people wearing a mask while driving alone. Mask fetish? No--it's just I don't have a hatred of them. I put my mask on before entering the first store. I visited 4 more, no leg more than 10 minutes long. Why should I bother to remove my mask between each stop?

If you had any idea what it is like for some people to wear masks, you would understand why we find it incomprehensible that people would wear one while alone in their car.

I catch public transport to work and masks are compulsory. As soon as I step off the mask comes off. I don't like the feeling of suffocation.

The feeling that the QOP taught you you have to feel.

Or are you wearing flimsy stuff that tends to get drawn in when you inhale? That junk won't do much good these days anyway.

Well, maybe. But for some of us it all seemed stupid and pointless; like children wearing masks at a playground. Covid is a sickness of the unhealthy and obese. Until recently, you were forbidden to mention that.

I know three people personally who were not "unhealthy and obese" that suffered seriously with COVID. One is my niece who is in her 30's and was very healthy and active - she is now living with long COVID after spending weeks in the hospital. Another is a friend in his 40's who was a construction worker and very healthy - he is now permanently disabled with heart and lung damage. The last was a previous boss who was in his mid 60's and ran both a registered Angus cattle ranch and a construction company, and was very healthy - he died.

Don't give me that nonsense about only the unhealthy suffering from this. I have seen living proof that is not the case.

Why should I bother to remove my mask between each stop?
How do you not find it irritable? I guess to each xirs own. I'm just not into the Covid theater.
The different infection rates between Republican and Democrat counties says it's not theater.
It's theater.

Your graph leaves out an entire year. Let's bring the data up to date: Total cases/1million of the population and total cases/1million of the population:

Cases/1M
Deaths/1M
California
23,1746
2,273
Florida
27,5754
3,431

Nobody's ever been forbidden to mention it; They've just been rightly told that that assessment is factually fucking wrong.

You are in no way forbidden from being wrong. You even have a constitutional right to be loudly and publicly wrong.

Don't be such a fucking snowflake.

1) The majority of the population has at least one risk factor for Covid.

2) It can kill the young and healthy with a bigger initial exposure.

3) Even mild cases are sometimes deadly. Note that these aren't being counted very well.

Note how old the data is. The preference for Republicans has become more and more pronounced as time goes on.

The sheer fucking audacity. The absolute cunting gall you have to tell me I only feel suffocated by a mask because a message board (or whatever the fuck QOP is) taught me to feel it.

It is one thing to say 'yes, you find masks uncomfortable and that's unfortunate, but people need to wear masks in certain situations to protect others and it's a sacrifice you are going to have to make'.

It is quite another to say 'I don't feel bad wearing a mask and the only reason you say you feel bad is because you are a conspiracy theorist who was either tricked into having those corporal sensations or you are flat out lying'.

Loren: the fact that you think ten minutes alone in your car is not long enough for you to take off your mask is a demonstration not that masks are not extremely uncomfortable for many, but that your own response is the freakish outlier. People have experiences different to you, Loren. And your complete failure to even acknowledge their experiences is a sociopathic, gaslighting tactic.

Doesn't stop 'that junk' being made mandatory.

FFS, the tyrants will not leave us alone;

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that it will appeal the ruling that lifted the federal mask mandate on planes, trains and transit systems, pending a decision by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the order is still required for public health.

News

The mandate was due to expire soon anyway but the authoritarians can’t stand that it was a Trump appointed judge that quashed the mandate. TDS.

Good. Dems will be demolished in November.

FFS, the CDC is extending its mask mandate on public transport into May despite there being zero evidence that masks work.
There is plenty of evidence of course that masks work. One simply needs to test the mask, see that it in fact blocks sars-cov-2 and other virus, and that is evidence that they do work.

But if you want more evidence, there are plenty of studies. Purely for example:

Of course, the mandates can only work if they are thorough enough and people abide by them.

Over here, we have a serious problem these days with the flu and other respiratory viruses. Covid is still annoying, though there are few cases, perhaps because there are almost no tests anymore, and also because perhaps nearly everyone got it already, perhaps repeatedly.

What about masks?

Well, they do not have much of an impact, I reckon because of how they are used - more like a fashion accessory. For example, I take a bus almost daily. That is one of the few places where masks are still mandatory. Here's what I observe:

1. Nearly everyone has ordinary cloth masks.

2. Nearly no one has a mask that is tightened around the nose. So, the air goes in and out easily.

3. Most people have their mask down, so that their noses are uncovered.

4. A good number have the masks on the neck, noses and mouths fully uncovered.

5. Many spend the trip speaking very loudly, to each other or on the phone.

6. Most of the times, there are one or two people coughing repeatedly - they are very clearly ill.

7. It is common for ill people to either go maskless, or pull their masks down every couple of minutes or so, to blow their respective noses.

8. And more of that sort of behavior.

Obviously, nearly all masks are ineffective. I still wear a good mask, properly. I haven't gotten ill even once this year, despite the massive covid wave in January, and the fact that most years, by this time of the year I got the flu and several colds. Maybe I just got lucky, though - after all, my personal experience provides a bit but only a bit of info. Studies are much clearer: masks do work (fashion accessories that vaguely resemble masks do not, though, and nearly everyone chooses them rather than masks, at least over here).
