Roe v Wade is on deck

Depressing. I don't think that the end justifies the means. I don't think that anti-abortion terrorists ought to be imitated.
It would be a bad idea even if ends did justify means -- this is a means that won't get us an end we want. A cycle of tit-for-tat violence is a cycle we'll lose -- they're better at it than us.

Roe v Wade is dead. Commentary to come later.

Justice Thomas (concurring opinion) Pg 119 said:
For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. Because any substantive due process decision is “demonstrably erroneous,” Ramos v. Louisiana, 590 U. S. ___, ___ (2020) (THOMAS, J., concurring in judgment) (slip op., at 7), we have a duty to “correct the error” established in those precedents, Gamble v. United States, 587 U. S. ___, ___ (2019) (THOMAS, J., concurring) (slip op., at 9). After overruling these demonstrably erroneous decisions, the question would remain whether other constitutional provisions guarantee the myriad rights that our substantive due process cases have generated. For example, we could consider whether any of the rights announced in this Court’s substantive due process cases are “privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. Amdt 14
And this is the bomb shell that the Dominionists have planted.

The 2022 mid-terms are going to be a firestorm. Justice Thomas is saying we need to revisit a right to birth control, a right to non-criminalized gay sex. Jebus fucking Christ.

It seems like Texas GOP having their 'let's hate gays' platform is going to be the basis for re-establishing the illegality of male sodomy. That'll be a pain to enforce, but the GOP really has no issue with spying on people's intimate lives.

The interesting part of this ruling is that SCOTUS historically holds rulings to as tight a standard as possible. A law about a 15-week time limit ban came before them. They didn't rule it was constitutional... they took Roe v Wade and tossed it in the shredder. It could be argued they didn't have much in the way of options because it'd be difficult to justify a new time limit, though they could have just let the states decide that. Instead, they gave the red states a blank check on abortion and gay sex criminalization, among any other 14th amendment held rights.

This court has shown, they don't fucking care about the law. They want their religious dominion. They will argue any way necessary to support their ruling, including arguing the exact opposite of what they stated in immediately adjacent cases, like the NY gun law.

Thomas should not even BE on the court at this point.

How does the text of this ruling compare to the leaked draft text? I haven't seen anything on that yet, and I'm not much of a lawyer, so I'd find it hard to interpret whatever differences there might be.

Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Twitter: "🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Following the SCOTUS ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Missouri has just become the first in the country to effectively end abortion with our AG opinion signed moments ago. This is a monumental day for the sanctity of life. (pic link)" / Twitter

Abortion deserts: America’s new geography of access to care – mapped | Abortion | The Guardian
In Cameron county, at the southern tip of Texas, a woman would need to travel to a clinic more than 680 miles away in New Mexico. On the meandering roads of rural America, that’s more than 800 miles: a 12-hour drive.

Women in some states will have to travel more than 500 miles to the nearest abortion clinic

A 2017 study found that half of US women live within 11 miles (17km) of an abortion clinic, but about 20% of them have to travel 43 miles (68km). Abortion bans in half of US states would drastically increase those travel times, particularly in the south, where a large swath of contiguous states are likely to ban abortion.

McConnell has already threatened to try and make abortion illegal nationwide if the Repugs gain control of Congress. Theocracy here we come!

The SCOTUS decision doesn't have any exceptions for things like rape, incest, etc. WTF! If this doesn't motivate people to vote for the Dems in the fall, we are really doomed. Damn!

And of course, we are awaiting the laws that ban traveling to legal abortion states.

That is the only silver lining here. This has to light a fire under the base, and for women especially. The concern was they'd slow burn the repeal, instead they shredded it and Thomas says, let's throw homos in jail again and make rubbers illegal! So, this is going to ignite many different factions.

Now, the one thing to note on abortion, is that it would sound like it would be unconstitutional for the US Government to ban it because according to Kavanaugh's tortured logic, that wouldn't be neutral. But I'm sure those fuckers would come up with a way to allow a national ban.

I very much hope that you are right. That this lights a fire in the base. Too many on the left and middle took this critical right for granted.

But I'm pretty negative about the state of the left today. We fight more among ourselves than against the right. That has to stop. The supreme court won't ban abortion. But if congress goes full republican in November (as expected); I fully expect the right wing to enact federal laws banning all abortions (among other things).

Meanwhile in Fuck You Sen. Collins:

article said:
“This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon,” Collins said Friday.
"Inconsistent with"? You mean "a betrayal to", right?

Chief Justice Roberts cements his legacy as a feckless cunt ahead of SCOTUS. He disagreed with overturning Roe v Wade, but siding with the majority.

Using the word sanctity shows this is a religion based law.

Remember children...

The Government telling a man he has to wear a mask during an airborne pandemic is a gross violation of his civil rights.

The Government telling a woman she has to endure pregnancy and bear a child is not a violation of her civil rights.

I'm willing to view life as sacred without any religious connotation. Even as an atheist, it is easily viewed that life is rare and beautiful.

But on the other hand, these pro-lifers don't give a fuck about life. They don't care about the woman who is undoubtedly alive.

Hard to believe a multi-term US senator could be so naive and trusting.

Interesting, she doesn't say it is inconsistent with what Justices Alito,r Roberts or Barrett said in their testimony and meetings with her. Which means she really should explain how the fuck she decides to confirm SCOTUS nominees.

...another example of eating one's own when one's own misbehaves according to one.

Anybody else see the irony here?

Don't want to shit on Alioto, or Roberts or Barrett. That would be partisan. But shitting on a friend who fucked up? Go for it.

Can he be hauled in for lying at a congressional inquiry?
