2023 House vote for speaker

Status Quo it appears. The GOP is going in circles and have been diagnosed with Electile Dysfunction.

Supposedly negotiating tonight... again. Don't be surprised if you wake up and Gaetz is now the Supreme Leader of North Dakota.

On the recall of persons not voting, Buck votes for McCarthy. Spartz responds "present". Sixth round results same as fifth round...

"It has been 100 years since the congress failed to elect a speaker in the first balloting. Before that, it had happened 14 time. Three of them it was decided in the second balloting. It took three votes on three occasions, and nine, ten, elven, and twelve ballots each one time. In 1819, 22 ballots were required; 44 in 1859; 63 in 1849, and a whopping 133 (and three months) in 1855."

Can you imagine the legislation process in the House? The Group of 20 just derail every bill wanting more and more concessions.

Really, what it appears to be coming down to is that the Speaker of the House during this term (if it is McCarthy), ISN'T running the show, isn't really the Speaker. The Group of 20 will be. If I were McCarthy, having Jeffries in charge isn't as crazy an idea as it sounded yesterday. Paul Ryan didn't want to fuck around with the Baggers. Does McCarthy really want to screw around with 20 sociopaths that make the baggers look responsible?

The election for Speaker this term isn't about who the Speaker is, it is about who controls the House, and we already know that these sociopaths are quite content on dragging the nation to the ground so they have more power. This is a preview for McCarthy.

Well, the House generally works by simple majority (no filibuster), so the crazies would be limited in what they can accomplish.

However, one of their demands is that the question of who the Speaker shall be can be reopened at any time by only one Representative. (I understand McCarthy is holding out for a larger number - say 5 - but that doesn't look like it would help even if it were accepted.) So we could be facing this exact same situation again at any time...

Looks like the Dems were just celebrating winning the plurality for the sixth straight time.

Adjourned until 8pm. That's past my bedtime; guess I'll rejoin around the 9th ballot...

This just in, a kilo of coke and a bus full of teenaged girls arrived at the US Capitol 15 minutes ago. Rep. Gaetz was quoted as saying he is invoking a "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Idiot Politician: We need a new vision!!
Me: ah-huh like what?
Idiot Politician: One where we work for the American people!
Me: Oh, you mean the old vision.

The problem with today's Republicans, "Working for the American people" really means working for the QAnon soaked, extremist, insurrectionist, deeply ignorant far right American morons.

Watch any clip of McCarthy using this lie and it makes one understand how accurate is your statement. McCarthy only cares about himself, not governing, and certainly not the American people.

Maybe the 'pugs would go in on Joe Manchin.
He's fairly self-interested, i.e. one of them ... get him out of the Senate...

:fsm:

The slippery slope to third world political chaos is steepening.

Some republicans want McCarthy to agree to a rule to allow the speaker to be removed at any time.

Extreme factions who can not compromise. Trump in the background saying people must vote MaCarhty because he says so.

Our stability is evaporating.

I hope that's how a few moderate Republicans feel about it. Maybe they will strike a deal with Dems for a few votes. :)
The Kev camp is already openly hoping for (actually lying about) Dems saying they'd go away or vote "present" for some enticement. Probably just saying that to scare the Loonies though.
The sky isn't falling Steve, but there will be a price to pay. What that price is and whose pockets it comes out of, remain to be seen.

Hyperbole aside the sky is darkening.

Rome was not built in a day, and it did not fail in a day.

I think part of it is the media. The 24/ hyper intrusvness and reporting of what anyone says makes it impossible to make a sensible compromise. A politician's constituents will know the personal and political details which may conflict with their views.

Compromise while saving publc face behind the scenes is no longer possible.

Mmm, yeah. Looks grim if the zombies attack this week. Maybe that's what Kevin is waiting for.
But if actual lightning gets close, I think think a few Republicans might defect.

It is funny that Trump's endorsement of McCarthy doesn't matter.
