CA Reparations Task Force

What history book told you that lie?
I don't need a history book.
I know that California entered the Union as a free state.
But I also know that nobody in California was even alive in 1850.

Nobody in California was ever a slave.
Tom

I don't realize that at all. Because, of course, it isn't true. But it is true that the majority of the state's revenue comes from taxation.

So, who do you think is going to pay all these reparations?

You keep dodging around this fundamental question. Where's the money coming from?
Tom
No one can answer that question, as it hasn't even been considered yet as far as I know. Presumably the state budget somehow or other. But I don't think anyone is going to be paying anything at any rate, that seems incredibly unlikely.

I understand the objection based on that it is subsidy to a undesired or undeserving group.
I understand the objection based that it is a payment to black people.
Nope.
It's the flat out racism.
I disagree, I don't think objections to reparations are necessarily due to flat out racism.
Sorry, but racism doesn't become morally OK because some politically correct Wokesters are OK with it.
When it suits their agenda.
Tom
Whenever I see "Wokester" and "politically correct", I see a thoughtless response.

WTF? There were people alive in California before 1850. And I posted a link the slavery in California earlier. I will repost it here: SLAVERY IN CALIFORNIA.

Ah, the old argument that crimes stop being crimes once enough time goes by. It's irrelevant anyway, since slavery is not the focus of this bill.

I believe he's trying to be "clever" and argue that no one currently living was ever legally enslaved in the state (and hoping no one here knows about slave labor in the Indian schools or the wartime concentration camps).

It's the support that's due to racism.
Tom
I understand your feelings. I don't think it is too much to hope that those feelings which are driven by suppositions and ignorance might change with more accurate information. There were slaves in California, and the mooted reparations are based on "San Francisco’s reparations advisory committee was created in 2020 to craft a plan to address institutional, city-sanctioned harm inflicted upon African American communities. But city leaders in recent months have questioned whether the city can fund the reparation proposals." (Reparations task force).

The slavery issue is a smokescreen in this case.

Or the fact that during the Gold Rush, there were slave owners who migrated to California who kept and traded slaves despite California being a free state.

Are the blue states a caste minority to the red states?
If you look carefully at from whom whose territory and labor value is generally extracted, and to whose bank accounts it ultimately flows, it seems pretty clear that the exact opposite is true.

Whenever I see "Wokester" and "politically correct", I see a thoughtless response.
An obvious tenet of Woke is to categorize people not as individuals but by group membership; then divide by oppressor/oppressed. Reparations fits that perfectly. People who never were slaves are to be paid by people who never owned slaves. As Stalin would say, all that matters is “who, whom?”

Oh, Stalin was all about eschewing state responsibility for past actions and policies.

And also dividing people into groups and punishing the “oppressor.”

Whenever I see "Wokester" and "politically correct", I see a thoughtless response.

And when I see claims like I'm reading in this thread it reinforces my already low opinions of politically correct and Woke.
"Politically correct" and "Woke" appear mean nothing more than "I don't like", which makes the terms appear rather thoughtless - just like your response.

The irony of that response is truly amazing.

So the Hoover Institution estimates that the tax burden on the non black household will be around $600k.

Hoover

I think their assumptions on who is eligible for $5m is well overstated but the burden will still be significant.

And of course, the numbskulls that dream this shit up are surprised at any pushback;

Those of my constituents who lost their minds about this proposal, it’s not something we’re doing or we would do for other people. It’s something we would do for our future for everybody’s collective future,” said Rafael Mandelman, a supervisor, whose district includes the heavily LGBTQ+ Castro neighborhood.

Teh Gruaniad

Who votes for these assholes? Hmmmm, let me think.

Keep on hand waiving.
