I don't realize that at all. Because, of course, it isn't true. But it is true that the majority of the state's revenue comes from taxation.

So, who do you think is going to pay all these reparations?

You keep dodging around this fundamental question. Where's the money coming from?

No one can answer that question, as it hasn't even been considered yet as far as I know. Presumably the state budget somehow or other. But I don't think anyone is going to be paying anything at any rate, that seems incredibly unlikely.

I believe he's trying to be "clever" and argue that no one currently living was ever legally enslaved in the state (and hoping no one here knows about slave labor in the Indian schools or the wartime concentration camps).

I understand your feelings. I don't think it is too much to hope that those feelings which are driven by suppositions and ignorance might change with more accurate information. There were slaves in California, and the mooted reparations are based on "San Francisco’s reparations advisory committee was created in 2020 to craft a plan to address institutional, city-sanctioned harm inflicted upon African American communities. But city leaders in recent months have questioned whether the city can fund the reparation proposals." (Reparations task force).

The slavery issue is a smokescreen in this case.

Or the fact that during the Gold Rush, there were slave owners who migrated to California who kept and traded slaves despite California being a free state.

I think their assumptions on who is eligible for $5m is well overstated but the burden will still be significant.

And of course, the numbskulls that dream this shit up are surprised at any pushback;
