CA Reparations Task Force

Can say the same thing about gay marriage 30 years ago.
There is a big difference between them. Gay marriage neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket. Racial "reparations" certainly would pick my pocket, even though neither I, nor any of my ancestors, ever owned African slaves.

And of course, what is being asked. Reparations over slavery v reparations for centuries of slavery followed by a century of intentional economic discrimination and violence. Also, what type of reparations. I think America would support finally eliminating sources of lead in poor housing. I don't think America would support sacks of cash.
I agree with you on the latter. On the former, I asked you for any polls showing majority (much less "supermajority") support based on how the question is asked.

Why are you against blacks having a voice in Democrat primaries?
Why are you beating your wife?

What a loaded question on your part! I am, of course, not "against blacks having a voice in Democrat primaries"! But having a vote does not necessarily mean that a state like SC should go first. I am against blacks having an outsized power in the Democratic primaries. Blacks are, what, 13-14% of US electorate. But blacks are about half of SC Dem primary electorate. That makes SC a very poor proxy for the nation. In Iowa and NH primaries blacks are underrepresented, but far less so than they are overrepresented in SC.
Additionally, Iowa and NH are smaller states with long tradition of retail politics. They give a chance to less known candidates to prove themselves. In SC, media and party machinery (John Cornyn anyone?) are far more influential and thus they tend to pick more conventional candidates.
Had SC been going first, we most likely would not have had Bill Clinton, and HW could have won 2nd term. In 2008, Obama would probably have lost to Hillary. Sure, he did win SC primary, but only after winning Iowa and basically tying NH, proving that he can win the support in heavily white areas. Without that vote of confidence, I think SC, and the nomination, would have gone to Hillary, and presidency most likely to McCain (given how poor of a general election candidate Hillary proved herself to be).
This might come as a surprise to you, but minorities vote in heavy majority for the Democrats.
True. All the more reason to pay more attention to the segments of the electorate that is not as tightly bound to either party.

It'd seem stupid not to provide a more prominent spot over fucking Iowa or New Hampshire. Iowa hasn't been the first primary since the founding of the nation, it only started in 1972. Of which, since 1972, only three people have won a contested Caucus and became President (Carter, W, Obama).
The modern primary system does not go much further back than 1972 (if any, will have to look it up later). And it's not necessarily about winning Iowa, it's about doing well. Bill Clinton did not win Iowa (Tom Harkin was from Iowa so nobody expected anybody else to win), but he win delegates which put him in the game. He soon won NH and the rest is history. And Obama showed that white people will vote for him, which is necessary to win the presidency. Winning Iowa and doing well in NH did far more for him than winning SC would have.

So you're automatically declaring him guilty
I did not declare him guilty.

You wrote essentially "so THIS is the kind of person" so-and-so hires. If you only meant your unsignified "THIS" to mean an innocent-until-proven-guilty person, then it makes no sense in the context of the arrest news you included. In fact, it would be contrary to the context provided. On the other hand, if your mention of "THIS" was in reference to something else, then it makes the whole mention of an arrest centrally located in your post, a complete non sequitur.

I have challenged presumption of guilt in cases of black people accused without much or any evidence in the past as well.

Only on rare occasions when you find the other option more deplorable in your regressive stack, like of you defend a domestic abusive Black male against his Black wife. That hardly counts.

Without that vote of confidence, I think SC, and the nomination, would have gone to Hillary, and presidency most likely to McCain (given how poor of a general election candidate Hillary proved herself to be).
This is complete nonsense.
In 2008, Republicans had left the country in a serious downward spiral. Their record of stupid wars and fiscal insanity was a disaster.
I'm pretty sure the Democrats could have nominated a Cherokee lesbian alcoholic and walked away with POTUS.
Tom

Why would that be the case? The dude has degrees from Morehouse and Boulder, and the position on Wu's racist taskforce is a paid one. No reason for him to be homeless.

Bruh, a one bedroom apartment is over 2k a month in Boston and to my knowledge there is no proof the members of the Boston reparations task force is being paid.
Maybe his wife kicked him out.

Bruh, a one bedroom apartment is over 2k a month in Boston
So? Many people work in a big city and commute from outside the city limits.
and to my knowledge there is no proof the members of the Boston reparations task force is being paid.
They are paid, and paid quite well - $100/hr.
Proposal would create commission to study reparations in Boston
As I said, the whole thing is a racial grift at taxpayers' expense. But Bostonians did it to themselves by electing a far-left, fauxgressive mayor.

The wars were bipartisan. As were the failures, for many years, that led to the Great Recession.
But yeah, the party in power gets the blame, and 2008 would have bene an uphill battle for McCain. I still have faith in Hillary that she could have snatched defeat out of jaws of victory. After all, she managed to lose to the Orange Bufoon. McCain is a hybrid of Eisenhower and Reagan by comparison.

I'm pretty sure the Democrats could have nominated a Cherokee lesbian alcoholic and walked away with POTUS.
Tom
Are we talking a real Cherokee or somebody like Elizabeth "Fauxachontas" Warren?
No matter, even if you are right that Hillary would have been a shoo-in, my point still stands that combo of Iowa and NH helps lesser known candidates not backed by the party machine break through. SC, not so much. And Biden is a party machine guy, so no wonder he dislikes Iowa and NH.

Thanks for the offer, however I prefer info from the actual Boston City Council. At this moment I can find on public record one PDF from the Boston City Council that mentions the word "stipend" and no actual dollar amount. I've sent Council members an Email, maybe they'll answer.

Overall I'm not sure what you think my point is? Sleeping at a city hall is indicative of homelessness. Threating other people in the building that you are trespassing at is indicative of a mental issue. What are you on about?

You're not the only person (or racial group) in America paying for things you and your ancestors had nothing to do with. Welcome to being an American. Care to join us for the anthem or do you have something else in mind?

Hilarious;

A group of African American academics is pushing for a UN 'reparations tribunal' to make Washington pay multimillion dollar sums to black citizens for slavery-era abuses, DailyMail.com can reveal. Justin Hansford, a professor at Howard University School of Law, led the charge for $5 million payouts to black Americans at the UN this week, flanked by colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University. 'I come to you today with a novel proposal, that we begin to think our own thoughts, propose our own vision of justice, and implement that justice,' Hansford told UN racial justice talks in New York City this week.

Gimme ma money now;

A final meeting of the Reparations Task Force meeting held by the California Department of Justice descended into chaos as members of the public lined up to have their say and demanded payments be made immediately. Some of those attending caused a disturbance during the public comment section, demanding reparations from the board. Several individuals became extremely passionate as they made their views known expressing their desire for reparations, shouting into the microphone that the time for restitution is 'now!'
'What do we want?' someone shouted. 'Reparations,' the crowd responded. 'When do we want them?' he asked. 'Now!'

Daily Mail

These people are going to be in for a huge disappointment. Well done Newsom.

Funny how only conservative news media outlers seem to have noticed this supposed "chaos". The video doesn't look especially chaotic to me. Like, everyone is keeping to their seats, respecting speaking order. Way less contentious than a lot of town council meetings I've seen. Is it just that you're scared of black people in the first place, so seeing so many of them in one room is inherently terrifying?

I mean really. Public comments, during the public comment section. You can look me straight in the eye and call that "descending into chaos"?

We sold kidnapped children. For use in sex, and for hard labor. It's okay to show a little anger when talking about something like that.

You're not the only person (or racial group) in America paying for things you and your ancestors had nothing to do with.
Can you give me an example or two which is comparable with the abomination that is racial reparations?
And even if you can, two wrongs do not make a right. That applies to the discussion over so-called "affirmative action" too. Just because somebody's ancestors were discriminated against, does not mean that we should discriminate against different people now.

There has been yelling, according to reports. And they are making some very dumb comments to say the least.

The task force’s final meeting in Sacramento on Thursday began with a raucous atmosphere as the public comment section — the first portion of the meeting — featured yelling from animated public commenters, one of whom got the crowd into a frenzy.
[...]The meeting sparked with the second speaker, a Black man named Reggie Romaine, who claimed that what the board had recommended in payments is not enough. He suggested that African Americans get half the country after divorcing from the rest of America.
Sparks fly at California’s final reparations task force meeting: ‘Now’s the time for a divorce!’

Starting this racist taskforce probably sealed Gov. Goodhair's fate re a future presidential run. This will be a huge albatross around his neck going forward.

Speak for yourself. I did no such thing! And I do not see why people who look a certain way should be punished to make people who look a certain other way rich.

Oh no not yelling. How will we survive.

This from the "It's okay to sack the national capital if you're white and angry" Party.... civility from thee but not from me, eh?

No, but your government did. Your taxes and the benefits they provide you and others do not exist in a vacuum, or beyond some magical barrier after which history no longer matters.

The lasting impact of slavery and the Jim Crow era continues to affect both myself and my racial group in the present day. We are still grappling with the consequences of these historical injustices. Need more examples?

Excuse me? California never was a slaveholding state. I only got here recently so the kidnapping and raping went on long before I arrived.

You are very, very misinformed. The keeping of African slaves was tolerated until 1850; just not sale. Both ownership and sale of Native Americans was permitted until 1937. And as with the entirety of the country, enslavement of prisoners remains legal, though California has voluntarily instituted law requiring that prisoners be paid... in most circumstances. There is currently a proposed measure to amend California's constitution to clearly and unequivocally outlaw slavery in the state, but it is proving difficult to bring it to an actual vote, due to the aforementioned "prisoner exception" and the unwillingness of legislators to let go of involuntary servitude, even if it is technically compensated.

Would it be better if these reparations were coming from the federal government, not the state? Yes. But even these reparations to our own state's citizens are highly unlikely to actually be made, let alone action at the national level. And as a newcomer to the state you may not realize this about our common culture, but Californians hold as a very central tenet that if and when the federal government cannot be relied upon, it falls to Californians to take care of one another to the best of our abilities even if that means assuming some responsibilities normally borne by national governments. If you disagree, I will note that there are 49 other states you could choose to live in without even needing to renew your passport. Or even, if you want even less legal protection, some assorted imperial territories.

One thing that helped create the best time in the US was the GI bill. My father and millions like him got cheap loans to buy a home and go to school. Red lining and restrictions on cheap loans to black veterans was a real thing and in my life time.

ffs, California wasn't even a state until 1850. Get your reparations off Mexico or Spain or whatever.
