Twitter likely to take idiots offer to buy them for $43 billion

Curiously, Musk agreed to censor Twitter because the Turkish government doesn't like their opposition being able to use it before the upcoming "election".

Then, a couple of days later the Turkish government signed a lucrative deal with SpaceX to launch Turkish satellites.
Think there's a connection?

My apologies.

Apparently, the SpaceX deal was 2 years ago and I was misled.

Musk censoring Twitter to suit the Turkish government did happen quite recently, but his deal for launching the satellites was awhile back.

So Elon Musk was spending time at night comparing George Soros to Magneto. Says Soros wants to destroy the fabric of society.

That made me think about it, who is Musk? The first thing that comes to mind is Tony Stark. A very smart person who's significant intelligence pales in comparison to their misplaced self confidence, meddling in technology without thinking properly and having a tendency of making things worse. Musk bought Twitter and is grooming it into an alt-right hate site... without probably really wanting, which again is the trouble with people with access to near unlimited economic power and technology. They end up doing things that they really have no idea what the consequences are.

The only issue I think there is with the comparison with Tony Stark is that Stark tries to amend for his fuck ups, even if sometimes that amending doesn't help as well. Musk seems to double down on them.

Musk wants people to think he is Tony Stark, in the image of a billionaire genius who got rich because of his intellect. A Marvel character that he might be like? .... Maybe Mojo, in which he is insane, but in charge, giving orders that don't always make sense, and frequently counter productive, with his underlings having to try and make them work. And that his only real concern is his own ratings/popularity.

Also, comparing Soros to Magneto... Kind of ignores that Magneto was against actual injustices, and wasn't wrong about the threats to his people, just maybe wrong about how to deal with them.

Alternatives to Elon Musk’s Twitter: Mastadon, Reddit, Cohost, Tumblr, and more - The Verge - Updated Apr 25, 2023, 11:09 AM PDT

About Bluesky its activity is still not publicly visible.

They’re ‘skeets’ now - The Verge -- the Bluesky version of tweets
The significant formative event for Twitter was when all the Something Awful forum goons took over and reshaped the nerd shit into something fun. I don’t know if the energy on Bluesky will last, but there are significantly more weirdos, sickos, perverts, and fuckups than on Mastodon, which strikes me as a positive development for the platform.
Dril and AOC are now on Bluesky - The Verge - "Two Twitter icons"
Ocasio-Cortez also hasn’t yet tied a domain name to her profile, which is currently @aoc.bsky.social, but Bluesky staffer Daniel Holmgren confirmed that it’s actually her.
From her Bluesky profile
Congresswoman for NY14, repping the Bronx and Queens. Grassroots progressive. Funded by everyday people, not lobbyists. A better world is possible.
She has done an "ask me anything" event there, but I can't find out much more.

“This is our biggest single-day jump in new users that we’ve experienced.”

Bluesky has had a banner day, and it’s doing an emergency upgrade to handle the influx of new users. I’m already worried how I’m going to handle the five minutes of downtime — I haven’t been able to stop refreshing the app all day.

Update April 27th, 5:56PM ET: Bluesky made it through the downtime and is now back.

Bluesky is starting to feel like Twitter - The Verge - "There was some real energy on the platform this week. But there were also some problems."

Mastodon's 'Toot' Retired, Its Version of Twitter's Tweet
To the chagrin of many Mastodon users, the software’s developer has decided to formally retire the word “toot,” a term long used to describe posts on the decentralized social media service.

The latest version of Mastodon — 4.0.0 — rolled out on Monday, introducing dozens of tweaks to the web app. Among them, the “Toot” button has been replaced with one that now simply says “Publish.” Many users lamented the change and said they planned to continue calling posts “toots” anyway.
I like "toot". Short and simple. Bluesky's "skeet" is less obvious, however.

Venues like Twitter suck for communication. It is a declaration site, not a communication one. And anti-Musk sentiment can only go so far before that isn't enough to overcome the fundamental issue with Twitter like sites.

Yup. For years I had an account there because my employer wanted us to tweet stuff about what we were doing. I never did. After I retired and when Musk took over I took a look at the place and changed my name. At first I looked at it a lot but now less and less. It's both addicting and a total waste of time.

I've found a few funny ones over the years but anything I like tends to disappear and the notification system is bad enough that I quit bothering anyway. (Hey, send me tweets from those I follow, period. If they say nothing, send me nothing!) This was long before the takeover, I presume it's worse now.

(Although I just ran into @Thereisnocat_ but now I see it's also on Reddit, I'll look at it there.)

DeSantis announced his run for Presidency on Twitter today/yesterday.

It went perfectly and is a testament to all the hard work Musk has put into Twitter this year. I think DeSantis has got this in the bag.

Nah uh, he don't fit in the Marvel universe. He's Mojo Jo Jo from the city of Townsville. His intelligence is not entirely his own doing, he repeats himself, and he clearly suffers from a severe case of envy and inferiority (judging from his tweets).

According to the Powderpuff Girls fandom page:

The City of Townsville is a fictional city and the main setting of The Powerpuff Girls. The Narrator always opens each episode with the phrase: "The City of Townsville..." Despite its name, however, Townsville is, in fact, a city and not a town.

Townsville is practically a beautiful place. It’s filled with clean air, home of the superheroines, sharing and people who are so friendly...

It's funny, but when I last visited the City of Townsville, I had a very different impression of the place.

Wikipedia says:

The city is also a major industrial centre, home to one of the world's largest zinc refineries, a nickel refinery and many other similar activities. As of December 2020, $30M operations to expand the Port of Townsville are underway, which involve channel widening and installation of a 70-tonne Liebherr Super Post Panamax Ship-to-Shore crane, to allow much larger cargo and passenger ships to utilise the port.

The port commonly gets destroyed by monsters. Also the Venn Diagram I had with Musk and the Powerpuff Girls never overlapped. I need to make a modification.

FYI - Mojo Jo jo and Elon Musk overlap here:

  • Driven by ambition and a desire to change the world.
  • Willing to take risks and push the boundaries of what is possible.
  • Have been criticized for their sometimes erratic behavior and their tendency to make controversial statements.
  • Have a dark side that can lead them to do terrible things.

BTW, the problem with the launch is that Twitter didn't pay the bill.
