Is this the thread for general discussion of Americans' political stupidity? That stupidity is the reason I have zero urge to visit the country of my birth.
Today I ate lunch at a crowded food court. A guy saw me looking for a table and invited me to join his party. He was a Thai who had spent his life in the U.S. and had dual citizenship; he was visiting with his born-in-the-USA son and that son's girlfriend; he asked me a lot of questions. When he got up to get some juice, the son took over, asking if I missed the US. I replied No, I wanted to avoid the US because of the political polarization. And that we shouldn't discuss politics. (I was proud of myself for saying that!)
But HE wanted to talk about it! He described himself as "apolitical" but sure wanted to discuss politics. Everything he said was a variation of "Same - same." Whenever he paused for breath, I suggested we change the subject. Finally I got exasperated and said the parties were NOT same-same, that one of them wanted to elect a malignant narcissistic criminal and traitor to be President! Without pausing or any hint of sarcasm he answered "You mean Biden?" (I can't blame American genes. This guy was 100% Thai genetically but born and raised in the USA.)
This was not an isolated example. I am at the point where I should just run the other way when I hear an American accent. "Same-same" is almost the universal attitude, even from a black American man who described himself as a "news junkie." I suppose most of the "Same-same" crowd doesn't vote at all; but some probably do vote for QOPAnon but are still sentient enough to realize that admitting this would make them look like dolts.

I marvel at the right wing's projection of great villainy on President Biden. He strikes me as essentially a competent administrator or bureaucrat and not much more.
Much like how the right wing depicted Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as extreme left-wing ogres, even though both of them were more centrist than anything else, much like Joe Biden himself.

An oft-repeated thing I've seen on many comment sections is what GOP stands for now: Gaslight Obstruct Project.

The GOP (and affiliated media): "Many are wondering if President Joe Biden has the mental acuity to continue in his role. He clearly is showing signs of early onset dementia. Why won't someone on the left point this out?"
Then of course there's the campaign to impeach him on the basis that he's some sort of super-criminal for (checks notes) maybe making some money when he was out of office. Meanwhile, a recent report showed that Trump wiped his enormous backside with the Emoluments Clause, doing millions of dollars in business with foreign companies. And as far as Hunter and "the Big Guy," again...all happened when "the Big Guy" was in between executive branch gigs, and Hunter was never in the White House as anything other than a visitor. Ivanka? Sitting at her desk in the White House making deals for her company with business interests in China.
And I'm willing to bet that anyone commenting on social media yesterday about the attack on the Capitol was immediately met with a right winger/Trump supporter bemoaning the fact that BLM and Antifa completely burned down both Portland and Seattle in the course of one long summer of nationwide left-wing violence.

I dunno about you, but I've been saving my George Soros Bucks ever since I got that bonus for voting Barack Obama in 2008 and again in 2012. All I had to do to earn them was show up to a polling place not wearing any overt political statement on my t-shirt. It was weird, but I went along with it and next thing you know I got an invitation to the annual Christmas Party at Antifa headquarters in 2015. I can't say much (NDA and all) but when that drag queen popped out of the cake at midnight with a copy of the 1619 project in their hands? Santos was fire back in the day. Just saying.

Sincere question: Are {some,many,most} people good judges of character? Despite being somewhat autistic, I've evidence that I'm a bit better than most at judging character, even after only brief observation. That Trump is a brattish and malicious con-man is totally obvious. And confirmed by psychologists who -- despite that they can't bill health insurance without a personal interview -- are confident of a "Malignant Narcissist (Psychopath)" diagnosis based just on TV appearances.
Are Trumplickers really incapable of seeing the obvious? Or do they understand he's a psychopath but admire him for it and/or think that's what the country needs?

Trek is super woke. Back in the early 60's it had episodes dealing with racism, class inequality, anti-war, ableism, etc.. The Next Generation in the 90's had an episodes about gender, a couple about religion, and plenty more.
