'Cause Kids Today Don't Need No Fancy Book Learnin'

I really wish we'd get the secession talk up and rolling again...
Can Michigan secede to Canada? I've been there several times. The people are very nice.
Jesus Murphy, we're not aboat to take you randos from the States. You voted in the Trump, you deal with him, eh! Besides I very much doat you could eat a full plate o' poutine, and that bein' the case, it's just your luck, you bet. We're not havin' it!
Hey now, dontcha know us Minnesotans are all about the poutine, eh?
I don't recall seeing that in a menu in Minnesota. I thought Minnesota was all about the ranch dressing.

Naw, man, you can't spit in Minneapolis and miss a poutine spot.

Brits over on Nicolette, between the Hyatt and Target Corporate offices has a really good poutine with pork belly?

There was also a Disco Fries at the mall, but it closed... Their poutine was trash, anyway.

My favorite was the Vladimir Poutine over at Hopcat (it had pirogi!) but they also closed some time ago during covid.

Uck, poutine, no, that's loooow class, pal. Up North, it's a hot dago with fries. And Holy Buckets, do not get betwixt me and a Juicy Lucy, better yet with a tater tot hotdish and cookie salad. That's Minnesoata eatin, you betcha.

The problem is it has to be peaceful, and fat chance of that happening.

I know plenty of Minnesotans who love them some poutine. I can’t abide that or tater tot hot dish. I don’t like my burger gray or my tots soggy.

For sure, stay away from the lutefisk but lefse is fine.

I think any effect on education is a secondary motivation for the OP action. This is a simple and easy gesture to part of Trump's base regardless of whether it ends up affecting anything. I'm not saying it won't have an effect, I am saying the Trump team doesn't really care much at all about any possible effect other than shoring up part of his base.

For a student whose government just expelled them from college for being poor, or a scientist whose funding just vanished mid-project, it doesn't make much difference whether Trump "meant to" hurt them or not. He is not known for thinking things through before saying them, but that doesn't make him any less the President of the United States.

But it does make him less of a human being.

Most of his team are self centered short term thinkers in it for the grift. But undermining public education and public confidence in education has been a big worry de plank in the GOP platform since the Reagan admin.

The good news is, the memo itself has been rescinded as of early this morning. The executive order, of course, still stands.

Michigan Yoopers have adopted the UK delicacy known as the Pasty. If that doesn't prove our loyalty to the mother country of Canada I don't know what will.

I grew up in Míchigan and I miss the pasty. :sadcheer: I also miss the country I grew uo in, even with all its problems. They’re next to nothing compared with what we have now.

Blue-state secession obviously needs to be at the forefront now. I’m sick of living in a nation increasingly controlled by fascists, swindlers, and hicks, to save nothing of evangelical loons. The kids, I guess, can be confined to larnin’ from Da Holy Babble and Trump’s ghost-written books.

The education system is low of the list of problems. Right now, the Trump Admin seems at ease with stopping the waste... where stopping the waste means doing their job. They have no idea what they appear to be doing, they've been jerking themselves off with the Laffer curve for so long, they think it actually means something.
I would argue that education is absolutely in the top two or three necessities

If they succeed in all their plans, I think there's a real risk of degrading the value and competitiveness of American degrees in a permanent fashion. You'd like to imagine that everything is the usual tit for tat, new policies every four to eight years sort of problems. But if our reputation slips to the point that US degrees are no longer a draw for talented overseas students, if all the would-be doctors and scientists are heading to European and Asian universities instead of here? That's not going to be as easy to fix as it was to break.
For some time, I have been considerably less worried (long term) about how few US students go to graduate school or professional schools. I'm not certain how all of the racists will feel when the only medical professionals were born overseas on one of Trump's shithole countries.

In the nearer term, I'm very worried that 1) foreign students will be less likely to come to universities in the US di

rectly because of Trump and his band of racists which will not only slow down modernization in foreign countries which are desperate to get their populations up to competitive speed but also will diminish the tuition universities receive--foreign students usually pay full freight while many/most US students get some degree of assistance, even if it is only paying in state tuition rather than out of state which foreign students usually pay. State universities are hurting for students and for funding.

The real plan is to cultivate ignorance because it is much easier to manipulate and control people who don't know much.
I think this was only true in a world largely dependent upon manual labor. Today, intentionally cultivating an ignorant workforce will only beget a country dependent upon other nations for technology.
And that is just fine with Putin and NK.

I also want to correct my post that I mis-wrote that you quoted in yours: For a long time, I've been considerably worried about just how few American students are going to graduate and professional schools.

The truth is that states including mine have paid an increasingly smaller portion of the costs of educating students in universities and tech schools/community colleges. This has driven up the cost of education for students, increased indebtedness and is harming our ability as a nation to educate the next generations of teachers, doctors, dentists, nurses, engineers, pharmacists, lawyers, etc.

Some well known grad schools have rescinded acceptances for graduate programs in biomedical fields, for example.

The Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School rescinded dozens of provisional acceptance offers to PhD applicants the week of March 10 for this fall due to concerns over biomedical research funding stability, according to a March 14 statement shared with Becker's.

Also, a lot of NSF-funded REU programs are getting canceled for this summer too. The repercussions of the assault on science funding will be widespread across education opportunities.

I think this was only true in a world largely dependent upon manual labor.
It is not about the labor force. It is about keeping the electorate dumb enough to keep REPUgnants in power.
that doesn't make him any less the President of the United States.
Rump is not MY president. He stole the office, And is not qualified.
