I watched the CBC's news in the morning. And it is something with how up front the commentators (not the news anchor) are being about how Trump is untrustworthy, a liar, and doesn't understand diplomacy or economics. And the story above is why that is.

Canada generally isn't abrasive politically, but Trump is just such a low bar and the stress he is causing our trade between the two countries, as well as all the other shit he is pulling, is leading people to say, 'this guy isn't that bright'.

It seems like Trump is responding to more misinformation from online.

For example, CBSA's list shows milk has an initial tariff of 7.5 percent (with exemptions again for USMCA signatories) but above a certain quantity that could rise to 241 percent for any exporter. This is still less than the 270 percent claimed in the post.

Trump has referenced the 270 percent tariff on milk for years without context, including in claims he made during his first term at the 2018 G7 summit.

I think he does. Putin can stop anytime he wants to do so, but he will likely lose international standing. So, he is willing to sacrifice more bodies (Russian and Ukrainian) to save face. It is the actions of a sociopath which is why Trump understands it so well.

Reality check:

1) Tariffs are effectively a tax on the middle class.

2) Gutting the IRS means no enforcement beyond he matching system. And thus a tax rate on the rich and dishonest that's near zero.

Of course this is a little deceptive. Under Trump’s tax cuts the first time I ended up paying more in taxes because of the SALT limit, intended to hit the high tax blue states even though according to this chart I should have seen a reasonable cut.

I never understood why people should get a cut on their federal taxes because they pay state and local taxes AND itemize deductions.
Most people do not benefit from it at all.

It's a tax break for the rich, but because it helps blue state rich more than the red state rich, Dems are all for it.

It used to be a standard aspect of tax policy that a dollar would only be taxed once. Thus things like you don't pay federal tax on your state tax. 50% of Social Security withholding is paid by the employee so 50% of your Social Security check was taxable. Many, many other examples existed. But over the decades the politicians have fudged this more and more to the point that you don't even realize why the SALT deduction exists.
