A prominent Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia University’s student encampment movement was arrested Saturday night by federal immigration authorities who claimed they were acting on a State Department order to revoke his green card, according to his attorney.

...

One of the agents told Greer by phone that they were executing a State Department order to revoke Khalil’s student visa. Informed by the attorney that Khalil, who graduated in December, was in the United States as a permanent resident with a green card, the agent said they were revoking that too, according to the lawyer.

The authorities declined to tell Khalil’s wife, who is eight months pregnant, why he was being detained, Greer said. Khalil has since been transferred to an immigration detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

One thing is for certain. You must not express any unpopular opinions or critize the government or else you'll risk arrest. The constitution is null and void.

Were the rubes who voted for MAGA on the basis of free speech really that dumb to fall for such a scam, or did they know it was all a lie and didn't care?

The AP website is an abomination, bombarding the user with popup advertisements, horrible to read. In any event, it’s not clear from what I was able to read exactly why his permanent residence status has been revoked. There will no doubt be more to this than what AP reports.

According to the easy to read report, the arresting agents refused to give a reason other than it was ordered by the State Department, even to his wife who is 8 months pregnant.

Actually, I read this morning, probably in the article that I posted in a new thread about the economic cost of deporting immigrants, that Trump is already in the process of taking away green cards from immigrants from Haiti and Venezuela, so this is just the start of his cruelty towards poor immigrants who are contributing to our economy but the racist felon hates.

How can we trust the AP if they can’t even get basic geography facts correct, amirite??

He did more than that. He was an organizer with one of the groups that took over Columbia campus last Spring.
Here he is mentioned in a BBC article about the Hamilton Hall occupation:
Columbia protesters take over building after defying deadline
BBC said:
For now, the cluster of tents remains in place. Mahmoud Khalil, one of the students who has been negotiating with Columbia officials, told the BBC that protesters believed it was "highly probable" that police would again be called in again.

"The students are here," added Mr Khalil, who said he was a Palestinian refugee who grew up in Syria. "They are holding their ground."

The left opened the Pandora's Box during the "Great Awokening" where people lost jobs for expressing unpopular opinions, or even stating unpopular facts. Now the cancel culture is on the other foot.

Did they have green cards, i.e. permanent residency, or rather "temporary protected status"?

If you cannot distinguish between legal dissent driven state sanctioned removal of legal residency and private sector legal decision-making(sane, insane or stupid),then rational discussion on this issues is not possible.

I did not say they were equivalent.

Not true.

Prove it. Don't just state it.

Any reason in particular you asked TS to prove it but not SH? Are claims exempt from burden-of-proof if they fit your preconceptions?

I checked the source SH cited and it doesn't back up her claim, so TS is probably correct. The NYT says Trump is revoking Haitians' and Venezuelans' Temporary Protected Status, not green cards.

Okay. My memory was slightly off, but the point is that he is trying to remove immigrants who were granted temporary legal status and imo, that's a horrible, cruel thing. We need these people as much as they need us. He's not even giving them a chance for asylum. He is targeting people from countries that he doesn't like and against people who are poor. If they are forced to return to countries like Haiti, it's a death sentence.

Because at this point, neither you nor TS get any benefit of the doubt, and the fact is revoking status is revoking status.

What, the Republicans can be so inaccurate about their claims as "turning the frogs gay", and "eating cats and dogs", but we have to, what, be perfectly correct in distinguishing the shitty revocation of one thing vs the shitty revocation of another?

Anyone who thinks like that can get bent around a pole, and they respond to see how many fucks I give, they can find all those fucks right ski-bap, ba-da, here...

In the first place, forcing them to return to Haiti was Biden's decision, not Trump's -- all Trump did was shorten their permission to stay by six months. You aren't going to claim Haiti will be a safe country after six more months, are you? You are de facto accusing Biden of sentencing them to death. So what is it you're arguing for here, for "temporary" to have meant "permanent"? You need to take that up with the Democrats in Congress who enacted the TPS program in the first place and never intended it to provide permanent protected status.

And in the second place, this is a green card thread. There's another thread for talking about your issue.

TS has a habit of blowing off discussions with terms like "gibberish" or "it's a religion" or "Sad news for the cultists" or "rapture like cult". SH does not. Nothing more.

He could also have quoted the portion from the article that disproved SH's recollection but he seldom does things like that.

Why do you think they didn't have green cards? He's said he's going to deport them, he's deporting them. Duh! The fact that revoking a green card has a substantial burden of proof on the part of the government that involves court hearings means nothing to Hitler.
