In my small town hotels and restaurants are desperate for workers, ie cooks, bussers, dishwashers, and especially housekeepers and laundry workers. The Hispanic people who frequently take such jobs, especially housekeeping in hotels, and laundry, are not seeking those jobs because they are afraid of being swept up!

It is always amazing to me to consider how the framers of our US constitution + bill of rights, in the year 1787, were magnitudes more insightful, compassionate, aware of the dangers of tyrrany, etc than today's MAGA. They came from an era of slavery, ignorance, poverty, disease, cruelty and brutality and yet they were still able to see a better, more positive vision and a belief it could be acheived. Obviously flawed an many ways, they still had a vision of values and ideals for a better country than had previously existed elsewhere in the world. I'm not that pessimistic. I think by 2028, even most MAGAs, especially the ones on SS or Medicaid/Medicare will be outraged by what their cult leader has done. The Red and purple states might try to suppress the vote, but if every single person votes, it will be hard to get another person like Trump elected. It will take time. It will take more outrage, but even Trump supporters are beginning to realize they made a big mistake. The only ones who remain will be the hard core cult members who care about nothing but eating the libs. Rolling over and giving up isn't going to help. I'm old and may not even be alive by 2028, but I hope those who are will fight, protest, refuse to allow the felon and the rat to continue to destroy the country.

Imagine the economic chaos if 73 million SS recipients didn't get their SS payments! Do these idiots realize how much of the economy depends on older adults and disabled folks spending their money? Do they understand that hospitals and nursing homes would collapse if it were not for Medicaid and Medicare? They are idiots of the highest order and since most of them are ultra wealthy, they have no idea how a poor or lower middle class person lives, nor do they care.

Without more immigrants we will be totally fucked too. They pay taxes. They pay into SS. They do a lot of the jobs that the rest of us can't or don't want to do. Plus some of them are professionals as well. Some start small local businesses that we need and som work their way up into better jobs. They deserve better wages and working conditions. They deserve to be treated humanely. They deserve and are entitled to due process, but the assholes running things are too stupid and cruel to understand that.

If we survive this era, it will take a long time to build the country back up.

Why do you think they aren't paying taxes? I do know one who doesn't work, probably because she can't speak any English but her husband has a job as a cook in a Mexican restaurant. He rides a bike to work and pays taxes. What would all the people in the South do without Mexican restaurants, which are primarily staffed by immigrants? We have 6 in my small city and probably 50 in the greater ATL area. Okay. They are really Tex/Mex as most Americans probably wouldn't like true Mexican food. It's too spicy and peppery for me and I don't eat lamb, which fancy Mexican restaurants usually serve from what I recall on my visits to Mexico.

I don't know many immigrants we need in total, but considering our low birth rates and all the jobs that the natives can't or won't do, it's probably a fairly high number. In a country of over 350 million, 9 million isn't many.

The assholes I did contract work for prior to retiring paid three people under the table. Guess what? None of them were immigrants. Two were men who had criminal records who had trouble getting jobs, and one was a woman in her 80s who would have lost her subsidized rental if she made too much money. Instead of paying her more and letting her work part time, they make her work full time and paid her 6 bucks an hour. So, who are the real assholes? I think it's the employers who exploit low paid workers, regardless if they are immigrants or citizens in desperate need of a job.

TSwizzle says a lot of them aren't contributing. Well, I don't know where you've been, but I live in Arizona, and I have worked with many, many, many Mexicans and others from more southerly. I have been a department head. I can very safely tell you that Mexicans in particular are usually excellent workers. They don''t call in sick, they are hard workers, and they don't judge one another on the type of work performed. Work is work, dinero es dinero. And they do pay taxes, out of their paycheck, same as anyone else. Some work under the table, but that is the case with tons of American workers.

I agree. There are plenty of poor white people in my town and btw, there are also lots of mixed race marriages and relationships I my town, and many of the people in those relationships are poor. It's more like wealthy privilege, not white privilege unless the person is wealthy and white.

I do think that the police sometimes treat Black men worse than white men, but it's not a privilege to be treated fairly by the police. It's racist for the police to treat a Black person worse than a white person.

In reality, they are having Federal tax, state tax, Social Security and Medicare taxes taken out of their paychecks...and since they are illegal they don't file a 1040 so they get zero refund. I worked in Public Health for 20 years and we had a family planning and maternal health programs that operated on a "sliding scale" - If the full fee was $100, it could slide based on your income. If it was low enough, it would slide off. I noticed something illegals did that real Murrican's didn't - the were honest about their income. We could have a white Murrican kid with his iPhone 15 report that they didn't make anything and their visit was free. And illegal would report their income and it might slide to $50. And then there was something else they did the far more real Murrican's didn't - if they owed a balance - they paid what they could until it was paid in full. The real Americans paid nothing and it was eventually written off.
