Weird how the US achieved air superiority in Iraq twice, isn't it? Saddam's vaunted air force barely left the ground in 1990, and by 2003 it was more a matter of "how can we stop the Americans from blowing up the bunkers where we have our last few planes?"

Not an entirely unfair comparison. Sure, the Iraqis were better soldiers, and better trained and led; But the Russians make up for that in numbers. Or at least, they did, before Mad Vlad threw away so many lives that he had to go cap in hand to North Korea to find more cannon fodder.

In the run-up to Iraq War 1, much was made of how the Iraqi army was "the fourth largest force in the world." Granted, some of this was the Neo-conservatives trying to play them up as a "fearsome enemy," but that propaganda worked to a certain extent.

Then the Iraqi army folded like a pack of cards.

When it came to Iraq War 2, Electric Boogaloo, they were still sold as fearsome, but armed with (again) weapons of mass destruction and the folks who knocked down the Twin Towers (maybe).

Once again, it turned out the fear-mongering was less than accurate.

Russia? Well they claimed they'd be in Kyiv in a few days and the war would last a long weekend. Whoopsie. Turns out the "Russian Bear" is more like Teddy Ruxpin with a bad temper.

Barbos' idea that they could stand toe to toe with the US military is laughable. Russia could probably have their asses handed to them by Poland.

Who are these “we”?

I suspect the US knows it can defeat Russia militarily in Ukraine, but realizes the cost (which includes the long term effects of dealing with the inferiority and paranoid Russian psyche) is not worth it.

The US would ultimately reach their objective in Ukraine, but no one would "win" in that.

Russia's invasion of attrition has cost the lives of a lot of people "fighting" for Russia, criminals, immigrants, minorities, and high brass officials. And three years in, Russia still needs Ukraine to give up, in order for Russia to actually win.
