Woo!

:slowclap:

Wooooooooooooooooo!

:joy:

Woooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I am very happy right now. Despite all of our complaining to the contrary, the courts, the media, and the public are pretty good about how we deal with parents who kill their own children by choosing religion over modern medicine. It is good to see that we are starting to apply the same standard to people who kill their children by choosing alternative medicine over real medicine.

May we see many more negligent parents charged. Maybe with a few more "she killed her child with alternative medicine" stories in the news, people will start to learn the value of choosing science over pseudoscience.

When pseudoscience Z kills someone, we skeptics may see it as an indictment of pseudoscience in general, but believers in pseudosciences A through Y just see it as an indictment of pseudoscience Z, and other believers in pseudoscience Z will just see it as an isolated incident. I suppose you do stand a chance of scaring those who are neutral about alternative medicine away from trying it in the first place, though, if there's enough repetition.

Actually, it's worse than that; other believers in pseudoscience Z usually see the attribution of the death to their preferred quackery not as an isolated incident, but rather as yet another baseless attack on them by their evil oppressors.

Hard to believe that Whole Foods still has a Homeopathic section.

Are there any natural food stores that don't have homeopathy?

I don't see any need to even have a trial. After all she is guilty...woo hoo. Atrial is just a waste of money. Let's just accept whatever the cops say and not have due process. Due process is so old fashioned.
Why should we let a mother even have her say

the article said:
But family members have said previously the allegations may be wrong.

In this case, I was specifically talking about the alternative medicine variety of pseudoscience. I am well aware that anthropogenic climate change denialists will not change their views as a result of this.

I doubt it.

Years ago I went to a Whole Foods store for the first time with a girlfriend who, despite being kind of poor and living with her parents, insisted on shopping there as "the food is free of chemicals" :rolleyes2:. While she was shopping for the "chemical free food", I wandered down to the drug/medicine aisle, and was floored. I never saw so much crap in one place in my life. It was like a witch doctor's medicine cabinet. Though, much to my disappointment, I didn't see "eye of newt". I swore from that point on I would avoid stepping in that place ever again.

They are truly the worst place on the planet.

I bought some homeopathic charcoal capsules once because I knew they would work. Not because they contain homeopathic woo but because they contain 99.999999999% activated charcoal. Some people just don't get it.

Does the mother have a history or ever receiving medical care herself? There really are ignoramuses walking around as human beings who are so bereft of knowledge they pose a threat to themselves and those around them. How do you prosecute this? Hopefully the judge will rule that she's guilty of killing her son primarily because she lacks the ability to think critically. Maybe she isn't mentally ill but she's certainly mentally deficient.

It must be a huge windfall for them. Placebos have to make money.

We have a couple locally owned natural food stores. Great place for produce and getting some vegetarian options, but their selection of placebos is alarming. One store is almost 1/3 it.

Huh, pure activated charcoal that is labeled homeopathic is different from the diluted to all hell homeopathic remedies.

Hopefully they're subsidizing the cost of broccoli.

You could just avoid those isles. You could even pass through them. Like, nothing will happen to you.

Eek! Mine is expanding. I was under the assumption they would be selling more food. Perhaps they're making room for the Eye of Newt.:sad-smiley-021:

Do you think that proponents of auriculotherapy, acupuncture, etc. will change their views as a result of this? If so, why?

Another modern mom living in the cocoon of 21st century medicine.

They used to hospitalize ADULTS for strep in the 1960s.

And because she knew of no one who ever died from strep, thought she could treat her son of this "minor" ailment with local weeds watered down to the nth degree.

Darwinism at work.

We should still prosecute people for this and make those prosecutions as public as possible.

She should be prosecuted, but she shouldn't suffer prison time. If convicted, she should be required to provide community service for a few years to educate parents about the dangers and ineffectiveness of homeopathic and other so-called "natural" treatments. She should be placed in communities that have especially high rates of woo belief to share her story about how her wrong beliefs killed her son. If she refuses because she remains in her delusion and is not convinced her dumb actions lead to her son's death, I'm ok with giving her the option of some normal amount prison time for the negligent death typically given in these type of cases.

Why the fuck shouldn't she serve prison time? She killed her own child with negligence, and probably still won't admit she did anything wrong. If she has any other children, they should be taken away, and if she has any more children, those should be taken away as well. She is clearly not fit to raise children.

She was deluded beyond belief and it lead to her child's death. Prison doesn't scare people who don't think they are doing anything wrong, therefore, there is no deterrent effect to it. If your child being killed doesn't deter you from stupidity, prison time certainly will not do it either (they don't think their child will die - so prison isn't a possibility to them). Much more good would come from her having to tell her story and educate people - that can actually change minds.

Well there you go. She spends time in prison in which she has to research, develop curriculum, write lesson plans, learn proper teaching techniques, hold classes in prison so she can field all the regoddamndiculous questions she's going to encounter, then... Ah hell, just make her get her teaching credentials while she serves time and do at least five years on probation teaching a course at community college. She'll either do some good in the community or hang herself in prison.
