I'm getting pretty pissed of that when the news mentions the Asshole in Chief's bluster about Greenland and how he is not taking military force off the table, that the Press almost never points out that Greenland is Part of NATO and military force against Greenland would require that NATO defend Greenland.

Where the hell is the press on this? Where the hell did the Trump administration flush their brains?

70 year old treaty with Denmark allows the US to establish more defense bases on Greenland whenever it wants to. So national security can't be a reason for Trump's idiocy.

Surely trade treaties would get what minerals can be mined.

Trump is just fomenting hate against the US for no reason but his snowflake ego.

Regardless of what he has said, he knows Greenland is warming and the US is having climate issues. So...honestly, I think it's part of the Lex Luthor plan of buying real estate.

His megabillionaire flatterers want the minerals, which are considerable, even if only the currently accessible ones are considered.

They all seem to be bent on "realigning" US military might to alliance with Russia and the blessings of Xi and Kim, alienating all our current and oldest "friends" (frienemies). Congratulations, Putin, I guess. Greed prevails over spine once again, in the political arena.

The reason is simply that Greenland has resources Russia wants. It's the same shit that was going on with the Ukraine mineral deal, Russia just wants Trump to exploit more countries for them.

Denmark has previously said that there are people on the ground in Greenland who are trying to influence Greenlanders into becoming part of the US. It sounds like yet another propaganda operation for the oligarchs. What would ordinary Greenlanders get out of this? Would they just be a territory without statehood like Puerto Rico that gets shit all over? Would conservatives all be screaming at them that they need to learn English? What happens if one of them comes to the US mainland, how would they be treated? Is this just a big distraction from the domestic policies shitting all over us?

There is already a treaty that allows US access to all the minerals it wants and allows the installation of any defensive military base required to protect Greenland from Russia or China.

The US already has what it may need. But the fucker in chief wants to own it.

He can't stop trying to steal things that don't belong to him. He doesn't have any boundaries and his supporters, fellow grifters, and financial backers are just fine with that, apparently

Since Trump has no compunction about living up to the terms of any deal when they become inconvenient, he thinks everyone is like him. Ownership is his solution to his projection of infidelity to deals.

My understanding is Denmark hasn't exactly treated Greenlanders (Kalaallit) like first class citizen so Trump sees a way to exploit this. Further while there is no formal treaty with the US regarding mineral rights in Greenland, as it stands now, any treaty written today would necessarily include Denmark. This is likely why Trump is trying to ice Denmark out.

Somebody on another board I frequent said:
I suggest a simpler solution: put a polar bear, the national animal of Greenland, and Donald Trump in a cage. Arm neither. Starve the polar bear for a few days first. The winner gets Greenland's autonomy.

To which I replied:
Well, that's hardly fair.

For fairness, you would need to starve Donald Trump for a few days too.

Trump couldn't survive being starved for a few days, though it would be a new experience for him. I personally have gone through such an experience (more than once), when I was young, but Trump isn't young nor healthy, but still like most people he should be able to survive it, but be too weakened for much. The polar bear doesn't need to be starved if the aim is merely a kill. ;)

I live in Denmark and I can say that Europe and the Danes are completely delusional. Denmark gave Greenland home rule in 1979. Ie indipendence. The Greenland parliament do not need to ask Denmark for permission to secede and join USA. Historically, Denmark has treated the inuit similarly to how USA has treated their indians. Not good. The inuit are still treated as the weirdos up north. There's plenty living in Copenhagen. But they're not welcome in the regular Danish workforce. Alcoholism and social problems are rampant. While Greenlanders are proudly Danish. I doubt that Danish patriotism runs deep. Denmark certainly hasn't earned it.

Denmark is one of the last European countries where the carbon net zero goal isn't just something politicians say. It's actual policy. Denmark has promised to never tap Greenland for oil and seem to mean it. While Alaska is USA's richest state per capita. Greenland and Alaska are quite similar in that they sit on massive oil reserves and have tiny populations. My guess is that Trump has made the accurate observation that the Greenland inuit are being screwed over by the Danish government.

The stuff Trump is saying now.. it's just noise. The only realistic way Trump can take Greenland is to make an offer to the Greenland parliament that is better than the shit Denmark is offering them, and then let democracy happen. So that's obviously the way it will happen... if it will happen. No WW3. No NATO problem.

I'm convinced this is the conversation that is happening right now between Greenland and US diplomats. One doesn't have to be a genius to see the pretty extreme economic benefit to the average Greenlander if they join USA.

That's my two cents from the Danish perspective.

I still think Trump is a cunt. But thought there was some nuance missing from the general discussion on this. While Trump is a moron. He's not quite as moronic as people think.

Indigenous people of Alaska earn on average less than half of that of Whites. This is reflected in a gini coefficient of .4376. The gini coefficient of Greenland is .339. While this is higher than that of Denmark mainland, it is considerably better than Alaska in terms of equality.

While it is true about an __average__ income being higher in Alaska, we have to look at who is getting the money and what it is spent on. We can see from these figures that it isn't an even distribution of wealth. Moreover, if Trump annexes Greenland, he's not going to be passing around ownership of oil to indigenous people. It won't be the same situation as Venezuela, but it's also not going to be indigenous owned oil companies. Indigenous people will get jobs working for oil companies and in the mines. Will they maintain a right to unionize? Will they need that extra money to pay for their most expensive US healthcare in the world? There are healthcare disparities between indigenous people in Greenland and Danish, but there are also extreme disparities between indigenous people in Alaska and non-hispanic Whites. At least in Greenland, it is free.

The economic conclusion is one of very high risk and uncertainty. This is a case of The Devil You Know...
