• Welcome to the Internet Infidels Discussion Board.

Do you think any aliens exist in the universe?

You have, of course, also provided zero evidence that ANY characters in a simulation could be conscious.
In the Roy game scenario, NONE of the characters in the simulation are conscious. Only the player's brain, which exists outside of the simulation, is conscious.
Say you were in a VR game and this is what you were seeing:

Do you think it would be cheaper for AI to generate the visuals and their voices and script or for those characters to be truly conscious? The characters were absurd but it shows AI can be very creative (based on absurd inputs).

That is related to what you are looking for evidence of so please answer the question in bold...

Let me repeat:

What makes you think we live in a simulation and only YOU are conscious in it?

Let me repeat please answer the question in bold. The answer to your question includes things like the Roy game scenario. And that AI video that could be hooked up to VR in the future. It is a step by step process.
Since I know that I am conscious, your claim is refuted.
In the Roy game scenario, if you're the player then I am simulated. If I'm the player, you're simulated. It is easy to get an AI to insist that they're conscious. Me reading your post doesn't prove you're conscious. An AI could easily generate your post. And I'm saying the Roy game scenario would probably involve technology that is decades in the future.

You can only know if you feel the sensation of consciousness/qualia. You can't do that for multiple people. All you can do is assume multiple people are conscious but not verify it first hand.

BTW solipsism/p-zombies in a world of physics is different from solipsism in a world with AI generated videos/VR, etc. In the world of physics behaviour is only possible with a brain with about 80 billion neurons - but in AI generated videos none of the neurons need to be simulated.

Are you confused as to my gender?

Tell me, what's my name?

Do you think that's a boy name or do you think that's a girl name?
I don't recall ever hearing it as a name before. Personally, I had figured it was a character from somewhere and thus said nothing about gender. And you didn't put anything in the gender field.
Have you never heard of Kylie Minogue? She was once one of the most well known singers in the world.

You have never hear of Kylie Minogue? Not only is she an internationally famous singer (including doing a song with Nick Cave), but also an actress. Admittedly not as well known as an actress as a singer.
She was also the subject of a Lewis Carroll poem:

'Twas brillig, and the Kylie Minogues
Did gyre and gimbal in the wabe...

...also Kylie has a cartoon of a girl for her avatar.
Thereby proving that I am a dog. QED.
The female avatar had glasses and looked like a portrait rather than something from a TV show, etc. It sounds like you're defending pood who is still saying "his/her/their" in respect to Kylie.
Yeah, the avatar is female but that doesn't make it not a character. Or do we have a thermonuclear weapon on here?

What about Kylie Jenner, a somewhat controversial person?
Singer, never heard of her. Jenner--didn't recall the first name.

Why would a male have a non famous non sexy female cartoon character as an avatar that looks like a portrait? Maybe they'd identify as a female...

Hey!

My husband says I'm the sexiest babe ever!

Sorry I meant that your cartoon avatar isn't very sexy.

Here is a cartoon girl that's supposed to look sexy.

Or this:

I didn't mean to insult you - I was just explaining that it doesn't seem like an avatar that a male would have. There is potential there though - if the avatar didn't have glasses or a pony tail or conservative clothing and had sexier body language... though I think your current avatar is good for these forums.

I'll try to get some sultry smoky eyes or flash my melons, shall I?

pood and bilby already think/say you might be a male and that might confuse them even more... or they might think you're a male who identifies as a female... who knows...

I am confident that I have never suggested anything of the sort.

Though I did point out that your reasoning was deeply flawed (even if your conclusion was not).
You said:

Do you think it is fairly common for avatars like Kylie's to be for males? Otherwise I think I do have a point. And by males I mean males that identify as males.
In gaming a lot of male players can use female avatars but I was saying that Kylie's avatar looked like an ordinary portrait rather some kind of identity they could be a bit obsessed about - like anime, etc.
I'm not saying to only base the gender on the avatar, but it seems to confirm that the name seems female.

I can clarify right now that my avatar is one of those ones made through Facebook that are based on a person's appearance. It is a representation of me, not some other character.

Yes that is what I meant by a portrait and that it isn't famous.

Right, now that we've got that out of the way...

@pood suggested in post 904 that evolution might work differently on other planets. In post 907, they suggested it might be more like Lamarckianism.

Could it be the case? Technically, yes, the chance is not zero. But is it likely? I doubt it. Our own experience with evolution is that Lamarckianism plays a very small role at most in evolution. If it is to play a larger role in evolution on other planets, then it raises several questions:

  1. What differences would there need to be in life forms in order for Lamarckianism to play a greater role. Obviously, if the alien life was similar to Earth life (with DNA and all that), we could reasonably expect the processes to be similar as well, since DNA is not well suited to change due to pressures faced by organisms. So what kind of DNA equivalent would be required?
  2. Why would the evolutionary processes we see not also apply? Why would heritability of traits not be a part? If Lamarckianism is in effect, then this still requires genetic (or equivalent) material to be passed from parent to offspring. Why would the inheritance of traits through random mutation not also be a part of this?
I think that if we are to assume that evolutionary processes occur with alien life, we'd need some pretty solid evidence before we should accept that they're likely to be different to what we see here on Earth. Just saying, "Maybe it's different" without offering anything further (like how and why they are different) is pure assumption.
