Split New York City Mayoral Race

To notify a split thread.
It's almost though it really doesn't matter that much who the mayor is, because she or he always answers to developers and the city council they appoint, not the other way around. But that can't be right, because we all know mayors, governors, and presidents are magical supermen responsible for all that happens within their demesnes.

Hilarious

A woke aide to New York City's new socialist mayor burst out crying when confronted over her assertion that it is racist for white people to own homes - despite her own mother owning a $1.4m Craftsman house. Cea Weaver, who runs Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Office to Protect Tenants, was overcome with emotion when confronted outside her apartment in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning. The 37-year-old began running down the street after seeing a Daily Mail reporter outside her home, then said 'No' through tears when asked if she wanted to comment on her professor mother Celia Appleton's ownership of the $1.4 million property in fast-gentrifying Nashville. Weaver appeared to be walking towards a nearby subway station, but then turned back and ran inside her home, which has a 'Free Palestine' poster taped to one of its windows. Daily Mail

In a press conference on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he stood by Weaver, but his team is understood to have been caught by surprise by her anti-white tweets.

Of course he did.

This is on top of his DEI hire for NY fire chief.

You can say that again!
(And wonder why some consider you a terminal bore!)

I bet she is getting online harassment and death threats which probably explains her emotional state of mind.

So they haven't banned private ownership yet in NYC.
So, is that a criterion now? Unless Rafiq Zohran outright bans private real estate ownership in NYC things are peachy?

We know that Mamdani has said that his end-goal was "winning socialism" by "seizing the means of production". And in another instance he floated abolishing private property as a way to "fix" housing. And how he has appointed a woman who wrote very similar things, but she also combined it with racism.

If it were Rittenhouse or Zimmerman merely feeling threatened you'd be okay with them murdering someone. So don't come down hard on a woman crying and running.

Of course he does - she shares his Marxist ideology.
Btw, this is a selection of Cea Weaver's tweets:

I am sure the usual suspects will crawl out of the woodwork to defend this somehow.

And here it is. Defending this racist lunatic based on an off-topic and libelous misrepresentation of completely unrelated events.
It's as disappointing as it is unsurprising.

LOL straw man meta irony. A minor official says something stupid, gets upset and acts childish. It only signifies an extremely slow news day.

Well gosh, then NYC must be weeks from the "Great Redistribution".

Trump just stole oil from Venezuela... sabre rattling towards Greenland and the typicals are busy finding some pretty trite shit to try and laugh at.

But no true socialist would say that. It is so wrong. :D

But seriously, anyone that knows a thing about American labor history is that white people were taken advantage of and the the US Labor movement (including the Socialist Democrats) was generally close to / exclusively a white thing. I don't think Debs was very progressive when it came to blacks in America. I'm not certain about Gompers.

There are tons of people calling her a jew on twitter right now and I saw one post of a guy with a shotgun. So yeah I think this is why she has that emotional state. Now, she actually did an interview where she was asked questions about her tweets and there was no crying. So, I'd say the likely change is due to the abuse she is getting: like posting a picture of a guy with a shotgun and tons of racists calling her jew and the Daily Mail chasing her with a camera. I have no idea what kinds of private messages she received but she turned her twitter off.

I'm sharing an article that gives on the impression that the new mayor is not nearly as radical as some seem to think. Of course, I doubt many if any of those people will read it.

Julie Menin, a long time woman-about-government, on Wednesday afternoon assumed the speakership of the New York City Council, where she is poised to serve as a structural counterweight to the democratic socialist mayoralty of Zohran Mamdani.

Around 1:30 p.m., the City Council unanimously elected Ms. Menin, 58, to the position, where she will wield power over a legislative body that describes itself as a coequal branch of government to the mayor. She will oversee a staff of about 800, with her headquarters in City Hall’s East Wing — just across the rotunda from the mayor’s office.

A centrist Democrat, Ms. Menin, 58, has become the first Jewish Council speaker and says she will be the first in the body’s history to use its subpoena power to investigate bad actors in the city’s business community. (In an interview, she mentioned debt collectors and the insurance industry as examples of potential investigatory targets.)

Unlike her immediate predecessor, she said she was also willing to wield that power to investigate city agencies, and said she was particularly interested in looking into some of the no-bid contracts of the prior mayoralty.
She sounds like a very reasonable person with plenty of experience.
Ms. Menin said she “certainly” did not support the online comments made by Mr. Mamdani’s new director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, including the appointee’s contention that homeownership is “a weapon of white supremacy.”

“I don’t agree with them at all,” she said, but added, “I’m focused on running the Council.”

“So,” she continued, “I’m not going to comment on every tweet that an appointment of the mayor makes, because I don’t think that that’s particularly productive.”

She said that after Mr. Mamdani canceled an executive order that embraced a contentious definition of antisemitism that equated some criticism of Israel with hatred of Jewish people, she called him and the two had a “productive conversation.” Mr. Mamdani is a longtime critic of Israel who does not support its existing status as a state with laws privileging Jews. He has repeatedly vowed to protect Jewish New Yorkers from antisemitism.

In 2025, they were able to gather some rent statistics for 2023. They found that average rent went up in NYC by 12% that year. There were two major groupings of rent: stabilized rent presumably where persons were leasing for a long while and those went up 3% to 4.5%; and then there were other apartments in high demand due to low vacancy, short supply of apartments, just not enough, and those probably went through the roof...pushing up that average.

So, slumlords, landlords, and real estate owners profits rose on average 12% that year. They, of course, do not want additional regulation on their hefty profits and have a fear of a pro-tenant mayor. This is why they poured so much money into Cuomo's bid for mayor and engaged in fearmongering propaganda.
