Climate Change(d)?

US officially out of the Paris Agreement, Teh Grauniad in tears

The United States has officially exited the Paris climate agreement for the second time, cementing Donald Trump’s renewed break with the primary global venue to address global heating.

This is merely weather, but there is a personal aspect to it. Florida is going to have its coldest weather since I was there. visiting family in December 2010. I remember going to the beach in Clearwater and it was 32 of so degrees, windy, with the sand blowing in the wind. It was unique. Thank goodness I was visiting family and this wasn't an 'enjoy the outdoors' sort of trip. December 2010 was the coldest on record. Wind chills down to the lower teens are expected this Sunday.

I have a tropical garden at 28 degrees north west of the Indian River Lagoon. It took a hit.

Killing freezes in 1977, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1996 precluded our having large mature tropical fruit trees and palms here. But the interval between killing freezes now exceeds a decade so we take liberties with our latitude. I gave up on peaches and plums about a decade ago because we couldn’t get the chill hours needed to set fruit. Now we grow mangoes. Got 400 kg off a single 9 year old tree last year.

The weather pattern we experienced last weekend with a bomb cyclone of the Carolinas and big snow in southern NC right on the coast was very reminiscent of Christmas 1989. So was the very windy advection freeze penetrating deep into South Florida right to the coast. Even the barrier islands took a hit. But we got big surf on a north swell like 1989 so that was nice.

But the freeze was short lived and our larger mangoes and palms survived and the water did not get cold enough for long enough to cause major removals of tropical exotic invasive fish. I was disappointed to census the upper St. John’s yesterday and find dead tilapia numbering in the low 1000s. Back in 2010 the kill was much more extensive and it took about 4 years for the tilapia and pterigoplichthys to regain plague proportions. I don’t think we’ll notice much of a population reduction. The Guyanans were out netting Hasa yesterday like nothing ever happened.

Meanwhile skiing is awesome in Canaan Valley WVA and shitty in Utah and Oregon.

Yeah, this winter has been so warm that I have substantial doubts whether we will get fruit. And, really, now, I was out in the desert in pretty close to minimum safe attire, at the start of February. Bonkers. I'm looking at the weather and contemplating days which are going to be too warm for comfortable hiking.

No rapture today? Checking with Search, I see it's been over two months since you've been enraptured.

You scribbled your meme in 17 posts during 2025, and even that was off-pace: You've averaged about 25 raptures per year since 2018.

Are you turning over a new leaf? Trying to think of a meme that will out-rapture "rapture"?

Do you have the maturity to abstain from rapturing during the entirety of 2026? I'll root for you!

Wow! I hope the kangaroos are rapturing up! That is hotter than it has ever been in Thailand, as far as human record-keeping goes.
The highest official temperature ever recorded in Thailand is a mere 45.4°, set in April 2023 not far from my old home in the degraded forest. But you still have a way to go to beat the record temperature in California: 56.7° set at Furnace Creek, not awfully far from the "SFV."

Mr. Swizzle claims that his favorite beach is 70° but that seems like Fake News or innumeracy.

We are doooooomed!!!11!!!!!!111!!!

The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, scientists have said. Continued global heating could trigger climate tipping points, leading to a cascade of further tipping points and feedback loops, they said. This would lock the world into a new and hellish “hothouse Earth” climate far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. At just 1.3C of global heating in recent years, extreme weather is already taking lives and destroying livelihoods across the globe. At 3-4C, “the economy and society will cease to function as we know it”, scientists said last week, but a hothouse Earth would be even more fiery. The public and politicians were largely unaware of the risk of passing the point of no return, the researchers said. Scientists warned in 2018 of the prospect of a hothouse Earth. In this scenario, global temperature stays significantly above the 4C rise of current worst-case climate scenarios for thousands of years, driving a huge rise in sea level that drowns coastal cities. The scientists said then that the “impacts of a hothouse Earth pathway on human societies would likely be massive, sometimes abrupt, and undoubtedly disruptive”.

Arctic air will accompany the change in conditions, dropping temperatures as many as six degrees below average. The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice across Scotland and northern England from 16:00 GMT Thursday to 12:00 Friday.

lol, clowns.

It is a catastrophic 62 degrees in Santa Monica!! Brrrrrrr, oh the humanity!!

Here in central Georgia it's a catastrophic 62 degrees, just 4 degrees above normal, but the other day it was 70 and next week we will be in the mid 70s. The little pink flowers and daffodils are blooming, so it couldn't possibly be related to anything known as climate change. /s And, all that arctic ice that's melting is nothing to worry about. And what in the world do scientists know compared to someone who lives in Santa Monica?

I just hope the poor birds don't get confused and start nesting and mating too early. Our behavior has already caused a lot of birds becoming close to extinction.

Everyone knows that local cold weather means there cannot be a global warming of climate.

Using the same (il)logic, John D Rockefeller had a personal wealth of a billion dollars in 1930, therefore the Great Depression was a myth, and those who reported it were a bunch of clowns.

The climate "scientists" have been predicting climate catastrophe for decades. No catastrophes, we are still here. And what makes you think that climate does not change and remains static? Are you not aware that climate has natural variability? I am sure that somewhere in this years long thread, climate variability has been discussed. Things like El Nino? Yes?

Really? Which species would they be and in what way did our behavior bring the species close to extinction? Do you mean the giant windmills that have been erected that slaughter birds?

New update to Tswizzle’s repetitious quotable quotes. They provide profound insight into why climate change science is all wrong.

1. This obsession with carbon really needs to stop.
2. This obsession with CO2 is coming to an end.
3. Teh Gruaniad says
4. It is a catastrophic 75 degrees today.
5. He’s a cultist.It is a catastrophic 73 degrees in Santa Monica today
6. It really is a rapture like cult.
7. It really is a religion for you.
8 You are dumber than I thought
9. Climate always changes.
10. Human activity has very little impact on the climate compared to what occurs naturally.
11. CO2 does not control the earth’s climate.
12. Net Zero is sold as the only thing that will save the planet from the climate apocalypse
13. I’d rather discuss science with Christians
14, Climate change is propaganda pushed by politicians and activists.
15. Scientists are climate atavists, ergo climate science is wrong,
16. The climate "scientists" have been predicting climate catastrophe for decades. No catastrophes, we are still here.

The climate "scientists" have been predicting climate catastrophe [over the coming centuries] for decades. No catastrophes, we are still here.
Duh. Long term prediction of disaster hasn't yet come to pass, shock!

There's an old joke about an Irishman who goes to train as a free-fall parachutist.

He jumps out of the plane with an instructor, and after a few seconds the instructor yells "Two thousand feet! Pull your ripcord!".

The Irishman ignores him.

A few seconds later, the instructor yells "One thousand feet! Pull your ripcord!!".

The Irishman ignores him again.

A few more seconds, and the instructor yells "One hundred feet! For the love of God, pull the damn ripcord!!!"

The Irishman says "Sure, you need to calm down. Nothing bad happened the last two times I ignored you...".
And what makes you think that climate does not change and remains static?
Nobody thinks that.
Are you not aware that climate has natural variability?
Everybody is aware of that.
I am sure that somewhere in this years long thread, climate variability has been discussed. Things like El Nino? Yes?
Yes!

It has even been mentioned, repeatedly, that the current human caused warming is FAR faster than any change in climate in human history. Perhaps you rolled your eyes too hard, and that fact was rolled right out of your ears?

I read a lot about birds and I contribute to the Audubon Society. We have destroyed some of their habitats, which is one problem. Are you not curious about anything. Do you not understand what humans have done and continue to do to the planet and the wildlife that we need to coexist. Go read a book or something and stop acting so ignorant.

ITHACA, NY.—The release of the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report was announced today at the 90th annual North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The report, produced by a coalition of leading science and conservation organizations, reveals continued widespread declines in American bird populations across all mainland and marine habitats, with 229 species requiring urgent conservation action. The report comes five years after the landmark 2019 study that documented the loss of 3 billion birds in North America over 50 years.

Key findings from the new report show that more than one-third of U.S. bird species are of high or moderate conservation concern, including 112 Tipping Point species that have lost more than 50 percent of their populations in the last 50 years. That includes 42 red-alert species facing perilously low populations, such as Allen's Hummingbird, Tricolored Blackbird, and Saltmarsh Sparrow—birds that are at risk without immediate intervention.

Proactively working to protect America’s birds is not just about the birds. According to the report, supporting bird conservation can boost the U.S. economy. With nearly 100 million Americans engaged in birding activities, their contributions to local and state economies are substantial. The report highlights findings from the 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, noting that the total economic output related to bird watching activities is $279 billion, and birding related activities support 1.4 million jobs.

“Birds tell us that we have a full-on emergency across all habitats,” said Marshall Johnson, chief conservation officer at the National Audubon Society.

According to the report, bird populations in almost every habitat are declining. Most notably, duck populations, which have been a bright spot in past State of the Birds reports, have trended downward in recent years.

Trump just got rid of effective federal greengrocer gas regulation.

Form a report China is outpacing the world on solar power installations.

Yes, China's carbon emissions have shown signs of peaking and are becoming flat or falling, driven by massive renewable energy growth (solar, wind) offsetting coal use, with emissions down or flat for 18 months as of late 2025, though overall absolute reductions still face challenges from industrial demand like plastics, even as China sets stronger goals to reduce its carbon intensity

But Trump said that there are no solar panels in China!
