Yet another war, this time with Iran

Crude oil prices surpass $100 a barrel as the Iran war impedes production and shipping
$100, a psychological kick in the crotch. I just got a tank full of midgrade for $3.99 per.

107 for WTI just now. Up $15 today alone. I’d bet on it not stopping until at least $150 range. If we’re lucky. Imagine what that will do to interest rates! Trump is upset over Powell’s higher rates and wants to accelerate the economy. But everything is about to get bigly expensive all of a sudden. Every grocery delivery just effectively almost doubled. Kiss affordability out your ass. Watch the markets fucking implode Monday morning. Actually the Dow futures are already down 800 points and the markets haven’t technically opened. They’re down almost 10% of their high.

This is insane. If people think this is temporary, they’re nuts.

Second massive shock to the economy in less than a year. Caused by Trump. Unfortunately Trump can't just TACO on this. Iran will have the world's economy by the balls. It would take a massive invasion of the Iranian southern coast to possibly open up the Strait if Iran doesn't want to open it. This is what you get when you elect an idiot who thinks with his fragile ego and who appoints unqualified sycophants to the cabinet.

Wait, are you suggesting the IRG has leverage to make access to gooda/energy harder and might actually use it in act of self preservation?

But Hegseth said...

Listening to Dean Obeidallah today who has family in Israel. He says they ask him about Trump because they are being told by the government that Trump's actions have majority approval in the US. The Netanyahu administration is lying to its own people.

What terms would we even demand, if Iran accepted unconditional surrender for some inexplicable reason? We have no clearly stated goals in their country.
Exactly.

And with whom could we entrust those demands if we had any? Every Iranian who gets into a position where he could, if he wished, order a ceasefire gets killed in short order.

At this point, it seems unlikely that the IRGC forces would stop firing drones even if ordered to do so by Tehran, because they would have no certainty that such orders come from a legitimate ruler or ruling body.

As the unit commanders are fundamentalists, chosen for their beligerence and commitment to the Islamic Revolution, they are likely to regard a ceasefire order as strong evidence that the order is not legitimate.

I don't think anyone can put the lid back on the box at this point, and I see no evidence that either Trump or Netanyahu are particularly concerned about trying.

This has all the makings of a very long war indeed, and one from which the US can withdraw only with serious loss of face, and from which the regional allies of the US (including Israel, but also the various arab nations) cannot withdraw at all.

Iran has form for simply never giving in. Back during the Iran/Iraq war, they were outgunned and outmatched in every way except sheer numbers by the Iraqis, but just refused to quit, even in the face of overwhelming firepower against which they were armed with two rifles for every three soldiers.

And Iranian geography is a defender's dream, and an invader's nightmare.

I took this photograph almost exactly a year ago; It is looking into Iran from above the Iraqi border. The whole damn country looks like this; One impenetrable mountain ridge after another, as far as the eye can see from 40,000 feet.

If Cyrus could conquer it...
Cyrus started in Persia, he wasn't trying to get in from outside, against a determined defence. And his opponents didn't have guns.

Terry Pratchett (Sourcery) said:
"My father always said that it was pointless to undertake a direct attack against an enemy extensively armed with efficient projectile weapons,” she said.
Rincewind, who knew Cohen’s normal method of speech, gave her a look of disbelief.
“Well, what he actually said,” she added, “was never enter an arse-kicking contest with a porcupine.”
So all that means is we need to start the invasion inside of Iran. All Khan needed was a bunch of horses to conquer it. We have lots of horses in the US. Let's get to work!

I'm shocked that a hard-right winger like lying Trump would actually lie!! I'm Bug eyed!!

Don't know if this has already been posted, but Lindsey Graham, our homegrown hybrid of Uriah Heep and Eddie Haskell, has likened Trump and Netanyahu to the Churchill and FDR of our time. That's a new note of poetic erudition from our lovely Lindsey. (I'll give up on the sarcasm right here, as this man is truly satire-proof.)

Gotta admit, I'm a little bit confused. Will this cause interest rates to spike? I understand inflation and interest rates rising due to a robust economy but this isn't that. This is inflation due solely to increased transportation costs. If other aspect of the economy are trending downward, like employment numbers, will this still move interest rates higher?

This is much more dire for other countries. For example, I just read Japan gets 70% of it's oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Could this crack Republican support? This is a biggie. This is the price of oil for the world. And Iran just gave us a big fuck you by putting Mojtaba in charge. What do we do, kill him too?

Yeah, the day came when he rushed out to the press to say how much he loved Ukraine and then took a shit on Zelensky after whatever the fuck that was in the White House when Vance complained about Zelensky not saying Thank You enough.

On that occasion, he said that he had never been prouder of his President. The man is pure slime.

This war is like a classroom where Iran's in the back row launching paper airplanes all period while Israel and America is in the front intercepting each one by throwing Chromebooks. Iran spent lunch money on paper, while the other two idiots burned through the entire school district budget before the bell rang.

War with Iran spreading economic damage far beyond oil and gas markets

The conflict has hit Europe and Asia harder than the United States, with rising shipping costs and energy prices.

As the U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran enters a second week, the war’s economic casualties extend well beyond the oil and natural gas shipments that normally transit the Strait of Hormuz. The closure of several international airports in the conflict zone, including the world’s busiest in Dubai, idled nearly one-fifth of global airfreight capacity, interrupting shipments of consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals and precious metals.

But the pain is not being felt equally. The cost of shipping goods by air from Asia to Europe is up 45 percent since the war began, more than twice the increase for sending items from Asia to the United States, said Ryan Petersen, chief executive of Flexport, a freight forwarder and logistics company in San Francisco.

The shipping impact illustrates a broader economic truth: The war is hitting the economies of Europe and Asia harder and faster than it is striking the United States.

“Europe and Asia are heavily dependent on energy imports, so that alone makes them more vulnerable to negative macroeconomic spillovers from the Iran war,” said Maurice Obstfeld, former chief economist for the International Monetary Fund. “Being closer geographically to the hostilities also makes Europe and Asia more vulnerable to shock waves from the war.”
That does not mean Americans will escape unscathed. Gasoline prices now average $3.41 a gallon, up from $2.98 one week ago, according to AAA. Farmers face higher bills for critical crop nutrients, and additional supply chain headaches are certain if the Iran conflict continues longer than the Trump administration anticipates.

Article shouldn't be behind a paywall, although WaPo sometimes asks for info before allowing non subscribers to read so called shared articles. This might be the article that said a desalination plant was bombed by the US, leaving people without drinking water, so Iran retaliated by coming one in another country. This could cause much worse problems than just the ones related to oil. I've read so many depressing pieces lately that I can't keep them straight. Thanks Donny for fucking up the world!

oops. I meant to post this last night. Not sure if all this shit hasn't been mentioned numerous times, but whatever.

This is what happens when leaders approach war with a 1950s mindset in a hyper-globalized economy. The missiles land locally but the economic shockwaves hit the entire planet.
