Yet another war, this time with Iran

looks like only half a dozen people showed up. So why should we care?
You can't conclude attendance based on a single photo that focused on their propaganda materials rather than protesters themselves.
In any case, groups like "Bronx Anti War", "Columbia Apartheid Divest" and similar show the rot taking hold in the Big Apple. The rot that also allowed somebody like Mamdani to win.
Killing Khamenei was a dumb strategy. It's good that he's dead, but it was nevertheless dumb to kill him. It's not like he was particularly irreplaceable, as we have seen. Killing him just puts someone even more fanatical in charge, and gives them another grudge against Israel and America to add to the pile.
To be fair, Khamenei Jr. was wounded in the attack too, so we almost got two for the price of one.

No names given out yet. I trust there are inquisitive folks out there shaking the bushes trying to learn them though.

Their names are Ibrahim Kayumi and Emir Balat.
Minab, Iran: 79-year-old toddler and 45-year-old adolescent killed 168 school girls in the midst of undeclared war with undefined goals and exit strategy, world press says.
Their names are Donald J. Trump and 'Pete' Hegseth.

Psychology aside, the previous oil price record was set in 2008, when prices briefly spiked to ~$140/bbl. Adjusted for inflation, $100 now would be just $65 then. And, adjusting the other way, $140 in 2008 is equivalent to $215. So, prices right now are not that bad.
And prices pulled back sharply today. WTI is at ~85/bbl, and Brent is ~$89.
I just got a tank full of midgrade for $3.99 per.
I get regular, and it's $3.19 around here. I filled up last night, but prices are unchanged today, no doubt because of the oil price pullback.
Overall, prices went up 40¢ right after the war started, and went back down 10¢ since. So, a 30¢ net rise.

The "Bronx Anti War" people are likening the Ayatollah to the likes of Sandra Bland, Malcolm Little, George Floyd, "Chairman" Fred Hampton, and H. Rap Brown. Not sure who the 2nd one from the left is.
Looks like Malcolm X
Sorry. Meant 2nd from the right. No idea who that is, but of course I recognized Little alias "X".

The only real hope is that Trump surrenders.

Trumpy could claim that he has accomplished the objective and quit because he never told a consistent story on what the goal is or what constitutes a win.

(OF course he never made a case for starting this war in the first place.)

I say that the situation right now is so utterly predictable that Trump and his goons are incompetent fools. If Trumpy hadn't fired all the experts in State, DoD and HSA maybe someone could have knocked some sense into his head but I doubt it. Trumpy doesn't like experts when his "Gut" tells him something else.
But it doesn't mean Iran will quit. That's the concern I have. They could still try to knock ships out of the straits and none will dare try it as a result.

Right now, the ships are changing flags to China to protect themselves, but that may not work - Beijing could refuse to recognize them unless they are heading to China. I certainly would if I were Xi. Hell, if I were Xi, I'd be sending Hypersonic missiles to Iran and training their people. I mean, why not knock out a U.S. carrier or two without consequence?

107 for WTI just now. Up $15 today alone.
It already pulled back to ~$85/bbl.
I’d bet on it not stopping until at least $150 range. If we’re lucky. Imagine what that will do to interest rates!
I doubt it. Oil production is more spread out, and world economy is less dependent on oil than it used to be even just two decades ago.
Trump is upset over Powell’s higher rates and wants to accelerate the economy. But everything is about to get bigly expensive all of a sudden. Every grocery delivery just effectively almost doubled. Kiss affordability out your ass. Watch the markets fucking implode Monday morning. Actually the Dow futures are already down 800 points and the markets haven’t technically opened. They’re down almost 10% of their high.

This is insane. If people think this is temporary, they’re nuts.
I'd get a refund on that crystal ball of yours.

But it doesn't mean Iran will quit.

That's the thing. If Trump declares mission accomplished (because the alternative is global fuel crisis that could last a very long time if the oil pumps have to actually be shot off) he's completely at the mercy of Iran to let the ships go through again.

The gulf oil producers are nearly out of storage capacity. If they have to stop the pumps, it's not a quick thing to start them again.

It's a totally predictable situation.

It took some six years of war, with enormous amounts of “boots on the ground” and horrific numbers of casualties, to defeat Nazi Germany and imperial Japan, and the latter only succumbed after the use of nuclear weapons.

But the toddler in the White House and the drunken dirtbag heading the defense department think this war will end … how?

This war is like a classroom where Iran's in the back row launching paper airplanes all period while Israel and America is in the front intercepting each one by throwing Chromebooks. Iran spent lunch money on paper, while the other two idiots burned through the entire school district budget before the bell rang.
The difference is nowhere that big. Besides, Iran's GDP is only about $450G or so. They are spending a significant fraction of their GDP on those paper planes. Paper planes that are for the most part being destroyed on the ground before getting launched.
Also I wonder how much their paper plane carrier cost.

Who does Trump listen to? His sycophants only.

At various times Trump has largely said that the goal is regime change without those words.

Of course he says a ton of shit that contradicts itself.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. intelligence assessment completed shortly before the United States and Israel launched a war in Iran had determined that American military intervention was not likely to lead to regime change in the Islamic Republic, according to two people familiar with the finding.

The National Intelligence Council’s assessment in February concluded that neither limited airstrikes nor a larger, prolonged military campaign would be likely to result in a new government taking over in Iran, even if the current leadership was killed, according to the two people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the classified report.

But it doesn't mean Iran will quit. That's the concern I have. They could still try to knock ships out of the straits and none will dare try it as a result.
In the case that naval and aerial actions do not work, occupying the coastal strip would be something US might try. It would not be as difficult as trying going into the mountains, but it would still mean that the proverbial "boots on the ground" must be deployed.
Right now, the ships are changing flags to China to protect themselves, but that may not work - Beijing could refuse to recognize them unless they are heading to China. I certainly would if I were Xi.
Even just allowing ships heading for China to pass would take a major bite out of the impact of the supposed closure. After all, oil is fungible. Any oil that gets through means that the amount of oil taken off the global market is reduced.
Hell, if I were Xi, I'd be sending Hypersonic missiles to Iran and training their people. I mean, why not knock out a U.S. carrier or two without consequence?
Why? I see no benefit to China there.

Escalation only favors Iran:

Don't know who this Pape guy is, but I disagree with his assessment.
Robert Pape said:
Iran’s strikes cannot be dismissed as acts of scattered retaliation, the flailing lashing out of a dying regime. Rather, they represent a strategy of horizontal escalation, a bid to transform the stakes of a conflict by widening its scope and extending its duration.
I am sure the Regime and it's supporters, including the tankies and the useful idiots in the West, would like it to be some sort of stroke of strategic genius. But it sure looks like "scattered retaliation" and "flailing lashing out" of a regime that may not yet be dying, but is certainly wounded. The attacks on their neighbors, including those with relatively good relations with Iran such as Qatar and Omar serve no strategic purpose. It is pretty much "do as much damage to everyone and hope for the best".
Horizontal escalation occurs when a state widens the geographic and political scope of a conflict rather than intensifying it vertically in a single theater. It is especially appealing as a strategy for the weaker parties in a military contest. Instead of trying to defeat a stronger adversary head-on, the weaker side multiplies arenas of risk—drawing additional states, economic sectors, and domestic publics into the remit of the conflict. Iran cannot defeat the United States or Israel in a conventional military contest. It does not need to. Its objective is to gain greater political leverage.
Winning by making other countries mad at it is some insane troll logic.
The strategy of horizontal escalation follows a recognizable pattern. First, Iran has demonstrated resilience. U.S. decapitation strikes intended to paralyze the Iranian military. By launching large-scale retaliation within hours of losing the supreme leader and many senior commanders, Tehran signaled continuity of command and operational capacity.
Did they though? When President Pezeshkian said that Iran will halt attacks against uninvolved neighbors, but IRGC still attacks them, that hardly demonstrates continuous and unified leadership.
There is also a question about how many missiles and drones they have left. They have shot many at all and sundry in the opening week of the war, but US and Israel have also taken out many on the ground. It is highly questionable that Iran can maintain this "horizontal escalation" (aka "flailing lashing out") for weeks, much less months. And this is pretty much all they have.
Second, Iran has widened the conflict well beyond Iranian territory, effecting what scholars call “multiplication of exposure.” Rather than confining retaliation to just Israel, Iran struck or aimed at targets in at least nine countries, most hosting U.S. forces: Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Greece, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The message was unmistakable: those countries that host American forces would face severe consequences and the war that Israel and the United States started will spread.
Greece? Anyway, what I see is happening is that this will make its neighbors angry with Iran.

And it goes like that. Iran' situation is interpreted in the most favorable light possible. This is not analysis, it's a puff piece.
back to SLD said:
Pretty much what a lot of people have been saying here. Iran cannot attack the US head on, so it seeks to broaden the attacks and effectively force the U.S. to invade with ground troops, where they will be worn down and it will be politically unpopular at home.
Again, I do not think Iran can maintain what they are doing ("flailing lashing out") much longer due to their stockpiles of especially missiles. The Shahed drones are slow and much cheaper to defend against - helicopters can take them out.

The only real hope is that Trump surrenders.
LMAO!
As the article points out, Trump has a serious dilemma on his hands. If he continues the strikes he risks long term political and economic fallout. If he declares victory and quits, he risks being labelled for basically surrendering; but the public may forget in 6 months. The problem is that Iran may not agree. If they keep up with attacks on shipping in the straits then Trump has no choice but to continue to try to degrade their capabilities. But he may have to escalate. Ground troops? What happens if China objects and says that's a bridge too far for them to accept and make threats to defend Iran? Russia is already providing them with the necessary intel. China is saying they will give them missile technology.
This was published days before the attack. Maybe that's why the war started when it did. US did not want to wait until the Mullahs got these missiles.
Exclusive: Iran nears deal to buy supersonic anti-ship missiles from China

I think it is shortsighted for Russia and China to support an Islamist regime like Iran. Just like it was shortsighted for Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Charlie Wilson to support the Mujahedeen against USSR is Afghanistan. Sure, USSR was an adversary, but even communists are orders of magnitude better than Islamists.
That's why I say the only real option is for Trump to "surrender." That is he has to stop the bombing but also go further. Maybe he has to offer to help them rebuild their infrastructure? Gives them funds to pay for reconstruction? What else?
Complete non-starter. Helping Iran rebuild their infrastructure will be important for the future of Iran, but can occur iff (if and only if) there is a regime change and there is a stable, liberal-democratic government running things.
Can he do that and politically survive?
No. Giving up and paying some sort of tribute to the Ayatollah regime would be a political suicide, and rightly so.
He has to find a way to make a deal whereby they agree to allow shipments of oil and they too get to ship oil to China. Trump's gotta blink. Not sure he has that in him. He's looking at a serious loss in the polls come the November mid terms.
I think it is the Regime that needs to blink. Accept exile to Moscow like al Asad and get to live.

Here's a good one! Crazies on both sides.

CNN
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said any Arab or European country that expels Israeli and American ambassadors from its territory will be granted unrestricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz starting Tuesday.

According to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said those countries would have the “full right and freedom” to transit the strategic waterway if they sever diplomatic ties with both Israel and the United States.

In a move that'll surprise few, mostly because no one knows it is even a thing, the WEC has postponed the Qatar 1812 event that was supposed to occur in late March. Season will start in April in Imola... assuming Trump hasn't spread the war to Europe by April.
Bahrain and Saudi F1 Grand Prix are scheduled for April, and will likely be cancelled.

The real thanks goes to the vast legions of American hicks and hillbillies for voting this evil buffoon into office.
Not to mention the Michigan Muslims and far leftists who did not want to vote for Kamala because she was Veep for "Genocide Joe".
