2026 Mid-Term Elections

We need to eliminate all billionaires by taxing them down to size.
And how do you propose that could be done in practice?

Let's say you want to confiscate all wealth >$1G. Most of Bezos' wealth is in Amazon stock. So does the federal government now own Amazon or does this expropriation trigger a mandatory sale? The latter would collapse not only the value of Amazon stock but every single company that any billionaires have a significant stake in. It would lead to chaos.
We can detect gravitational waves in the fabric of spacetime, but we are powerless to devise a method to monetize tax revenue from held stock wealth?

It is admittedly a newer problem, but are you really suggesting it isn't possible?

carry on about minor figures on the "radical left" while ignoring or excusing radical right wing people in power
Nothing wrong with that IMO. Most people are “partisan” to some extent, and will tend to excuse the faults of their preferred candidates and positions, while condemning those of the opposition.
What bothers me is dishonest misrepresentation of one’s own position.
That’s how a CWOT evolves.

You think some online “influencer” will have more effect on potential voters that a clusterfucking warmongering white Christian nationalist Secretary of War?
Is Hagseth campaigning with Mike Rogers, or what is the point of your continuing whataboutism?

If you don't know the current and future, potential impact that Kegsbreath has on the elections, then you stuck your head in the sand while living under a rock. (Figuratively).

The issue I have is you love to bring this shit up for left-wing, but not much recognition on the right-wing.
Note that I compared the threat of an islamoleftist takeover of the Democratic Party with the MAGA takeover of the Democratic Party.
As noted, Piker online influencer of questionable influence on the primaries (you could feel free at any moment to provide data supporting said influence).
What kind of data are you looking for? Streaming figures? Or what?

Pete Hegseth running the US military.
But he is not really a big influence over the "2026 midterm elections".
It has been obvious to most of us that you visit different parts of the web than most of us. I am uninterested in right wing ‘influencers’ or influencers in general and I weep at the failure of my generation not to teach your generation better.

Here’s the best thing my father ever taught me:

Think for yourself.

Until you mentioned him, I doubt many of us had heard of Piker. That’s his real name?

We used to do it. Look at tax tables before 1970.

That was different. I get what Derec is raising issue with. The problem is people like Bezos and Musk have billions in unrealized wealth. So you can't tax it like income or share sales because they haven't been sold. This is also part of the problem because these sorts of assets can be used to leverage loans for access to cash. So they get to hold onto the asset and pay a trifle in interest, utilizing their wealth without actually needing to sell and gain access to it which would have made it taxable.

So taxing stock wealth is new and tricky, and needs to be done in a manner that isn't unfair. But the idea that a solution can not be had is quite ridiculous.

“The Problem” is that “FAIR” is defined by billionaires. If they have to pay 50-90% of their income above a certain level, it’s unfair by their calculus to let poor people skate at a fraction of that rate. If they have to pay a 5% wealth tax on everything they own, so should poor people.
It’s way fucked up. When America was Great, the top marginal tax rate was over 90%. Now it’s a fraction of that rate, and billionaires’ greed is totally unbridled, giving them control over everything INCLUDING THEIR OWN TAX RATES.

No amount of money in a bank account can give them control over the reality of angry peasants dragging them out of their bunkers and stuffing them into meat grinders, though.

I think it kinda has. We used to be warn d that religion was the opiate of the masses. Well screens are now the religion/opiate of the masses, peddling outrage, falsehoods, partial truths.

Who owns the networks? Who owns the news? What happened to Stephen Colbert? What’s happening to Jimmy Kimmel? Who owns the Internet browsers? The algorithms?

It ain’t us.

Tensions over pro-Israel lobbying group
WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) - A growing number of Democratic primary challengers are making opposition to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee a campaign issue as they seek to unseat party incumbents backed by the influential pro-Israel advocacy group.
Why? Has someone(s) gone too far?
The trend reflects divisions over U.S. policy toward Israel as the wars in Gaza and Iran deepen intraparty tensions ahead of November’s midterm election.

Track AIPAC
To see the Democratic candidates opposed to genocide and some who never met a dollar they didn't like.

Mainstream Democratic supporters of Israel cite U.S. national security interests tied to Israel’s security
Yeah. How's that work again?
Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has reshaped Democratic politics, triggering a backlash among largely younger voters and intensifying a generational divide within the party.
And that generation needs to get out and vote.

Roughly 80% of Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents have an unfavorable view of Israel, according to a March survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center

Good god, woman! You beat out every Republican in the state... combined!

Roughly 80% of Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents have an unfavorable view of Israel, according to a March survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center
Egad! That is a bit much. According to the Pew Study though:
Pew Article said:
More Republicans and Republican leaners have a favorable than unfavorable view of Israel (58% vs. 41%). Still, the share of Republicans with a negative view has ticked up since last year, driven by those under 50. Today, 57% of Republicans ages 18 to 49 have an unfavorable opinion of Israel, up from 50% last year. Large majorities of Republicans 50 and older continue to view Israel positively.
It isn't just the Democrats.

I am very leary of having a "negative view" of "Israel" rather than "Israeli policy". The prior sounds awfully dark.

It’s Anti-Semitic.

There is a difference between being anti-Israeli policy atm or anti-BiBi abd being anti-Israel or anti -Jew. But anti-Israel is really all encompassing.

I question whether the poll is wording it right though. Looking at the poll, it only asks if a person has a favorable opinion of *insert country*. That can carry variable interpretations, most of them benign. Would an unfavorable view of Russia mean people hated Russians?

In this context and with current events in mind, I would consider Israel/Israel policy one and the same if asked in such a poll. Unless there are people who are against Israel the landmass in which case I'm sure the question would be phrased as Israel's right to exist.

Get Netanyahu and the hardliners out of power and I bet positive view of would get an immediate bump.

I wish I were as certain as you are.

I think many of the boomer generation were/are very supportive of Israel partly because we grew up treading The Diary of Anne Franke and we had parents or uncles who fought in WWII. We were much more keenly aware of anti-semitism in the world and in our communities and our families. Growing up, a lot of us never encountered anyone of Arab descent and few Jewish people, so all of it was fairly theoretical. Being supportive of Israel and the Jewish people was a bit rebellious, in a very safe way if you grew up in the Midwest anyway.

Now, many more young people know people of Arabic descent t, possibly more than they know people of Jewish descent. WWII seems so far away. Jews are not seen as the underdogs the same way they were in the 60’s-70’s. But Arabs are. Kids today saw anyone who ‘ looked Arab’ regarded with suspicion after 9/11. What young generation does not love an underdog? Plus of course it is easier to see the Arab side to the Arab Israeli conflicts now compared with 50 years ago.

This is all a very surface analysis of how/why opinion in the US has shifted, deliberately as most people in the IS do not have a very good sense of history, geography or context for world events. Even more true of younger people, who, like their parents before them, like to see things differently and choose their own heroes—helped along by the omniscient media and propaganda machines. They correctly question every position their parents took as we boomers questioned our parents’ positions and they, their parents’.

Two completely different things, you will have to admit. Note that Toni wants to "monetize" so much tax value from held stock that e.g. Jeff Bezos' net worth drops below one billion dollars. How do you imagine that being possible without confiscating said stock or forcing him to sell?
This is more akin to squaring the circle than detecting gravitational waves.
It is admittedly a newer problem, but are you really suggesting it isn't possible?
On the level Toni wants to do it it certainly is. On the level of Bernian wealth tax proposals, it most likely is impossible too, which means that his wealth tax would lead to forced sales as well.

What bothers me is dishonest misrepresentation of one’s own position.
Not misrepresenting anything.
I am a classically liberal independent who mostly votes for Democrats.
That's also why I am particularly concerned with the trajectory that the Democratic Party has taken in recent years, since at least 2018 when original Squad members were elected to Congress.

If you don't know the current and future, potential impact that Kegsbreath has on the elections, then you stuck your head in the sand while living under a rock. (Figuratively).
If he wasn't offered as a deliberate whataboutism to detract from a discussion of Hasan Piker's influence on the elections, you might have a point.

It has been obvious to most of us that you visit different parts of the web than most of us. I am uninterested in right wing ‘influencers’ or influencers in general and I weep at the failure of my generation not to teach your generation better.
It's not like I watch influencers' streams either, be they on the right or the left.
But these influencers affect the real world, and mainstream news outlets have covered him and other politfluencers a lot. Do you read New York Times? He has been covered on their pages a lot for example.
Here’s the best thing my father ever taught me:
Think for yourself.
Sure. But that is not in conflict with the idea of being informed about people in the news.
Until you mentioned him, I doubt many of us had heard of Piker. That’s his real name?
Yes, it's his real name. He is a Turkish Muslim, and the nephew of Cenk Uygur. He got his start on The Young Turks, so I guess you could call him a nepo baby.
