California Doing California Things

Well, at least its not as bad as the recall election of 2003 when Arnold won. Gary Coleman and a porn star were among the 135 candidates who ran that time.
Aaaak!
I don’t know how you and Swiz can stand it!
Venting on this forum helps, but you guys always dismiss it, say "Trump is worse, blah, blah, blah" and make fun of us. :angryfist:
Are you saying Trump is NOT ”worse”?
That might be a fun “discussion”.

The grift never ends

Gov. Gavin Newsom is rolling out a taxpayer-backed freebie for new parents, promising hundreds of diapers for every baby born in California under a new statewide program. The Democrat announced Friday that the state will partner with nonprofit Baby2Baby to hand out 400 free diapers to families leaving participating hospitals, starting this summer. According to the Associated Press, the state has allocated $7.4 million in last year’s budget to launch the free diaper initiative, and Governor Newsom’s latest proposal seeks an additional $12.5 million for implementation through the fiscal year ending in June 2027.

How is this a grift? It's early campaigning so that when he runs for POTUS he can point to this as doing something concrete to help families. Strategic political moves aren't necessarily a grift and when it actually helps people who need help it's good policy.

Yeah, grift is not really the right word here, unless the non-profit Baby2Baby turns out to be one of the many California NGOs that are gifted millions by the cities and state to help solve/mitigate various social issues, but end up accomplishing nothing (or making things worse) and are rarely held accountable for results. Those in charge often end up getting rich via their high salaries or, worse yet, engage in lavish spending or even embezzling. Its a little early to concude Baby2Baby is one of those, but time will tell. But, yeah, it seems to be more of a political move on Gavin's part. He knows Democrats need their female base to maintain power, as Republicans seem to be making inroads in top political positions e.g. Steve Hilton and Spenser Pratt.

The fourth largest economy in the world hasn’t got a pot to piss in but has millions of dollars for this nonsense.
New babies? Families? Are "nonsense"? That's what gets me.

lol, you really are something else. Handing out millions of dollars worth of diapers to a few new borns does nothing to help the poor in any significant way. This is a bs publicity sham and another grift. I think you know this but you can’t help but defend this shit.
Oh? And what would "help the poor

Also, how out of touch are you that you think only "poor" families are struggling right now?

It’s a 20m taxpayer dollar donation to a charity. Which Newsom will receive back in donations from the multitude of female celebrity fuckwits that are part of it. They are going to give away the most expensive diapers ever made to a select few people. The insufferable Mrs Newsom is close friends with one of the CEO of this charity. The corruption in this state is sickening.

So your problem isn't that families are being helped in the wrong way, it's that they are being helped at all. That, to you, is inherently "grift". You offer no suggestions on how this could be done better, or what could be done instead, or how the same money could be better spent. You're just furious that babies are receiving material assistance from the state.

This makes sense, as you belong to a political party that is and has always been, fiercely anti-child, anti-woman, anti-family, and anti-prosperity.

Gavin Newsom under fire over $20M diaper deal tied to wife-linked nonprofit network

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing accusations of corruption for paying $20 million in taxpayer money to a nonprofit led by an executive who also sits on the board of his wife’s organization that promotes gender equity.

It all comes down to diapers — as the initiative, “Golden State Start,” was rolled out ahead of Mother’s Day, billed as a partnership between the state and Los Angeles-based Baby2Baby.

The program aims to provide free diapers to newborns through hospitals statewide, but the deal has triggered a wave of scrutiny over how the nonprofit was chosen, and its proximity to Newsom’s political and personal network.

So is your objection more or less just that it "feels improper" for the contract to be awarded to an organization headed by someone who knows the governor personally?

There are generally rules of conduct when it comes to these things. Shouldn't such contracts go through an application and bidding process? Maybe it did and Baby2Baby just happened to win and just happened to be linked to Newsom's wife. But it smells fishy to me. What about you? A rule against awarding contracts to non-profits whose CEOs have a second degree connection to the governor strikes me as impractical. There aren't that many charitable organizations, and the likelihood of beong headed by someone who knows someone who knows the governor is pretty high. I'll likely (god willing) never meet Gavin Newsom personally, but I know rather a lot of people who do know him.

News
How is this a grift? It's early campaigning so that when he runs for POTUS he can point to this as doing something concrete to help families. Strategic political moves aren't necessarily a grift and when it actually helps people who need help it's good policy.

Did not know that, but, yeah...

You always have to be careful about the NY Post! They are very loose when looking to promote controversy. His wife is not on the Goldenstart board. The CEO of Goldenstart also the CEO of babytobaby. His wife sits on the board of babytobaby. They are two separate entities. My issue is more that California shouldn't be promoting any new programs while they are in a budget deficit.

Sorry. Yes, I haven't been keeping up in this thread. I'm partially boycotting this thread! This thread bugs me. Don't go! I enjoy reading your input on things. You are respectful and polite, unlike many here (including me sometimes ).

California gets attention because, as people like to point out, its the 4th largest economy in the world! ;) I would welcome threads on other states where things are happening. It gets a little tedious focusing so much on federal level politics.

Tswizzle doesn't live in those states.
Yeah but did you know California has the 4th largest economy in the world? It hasn't been brought up enough in this thread and I find that to be insufferable.

Don’t worry. Swiz helped elect someone to do something about it.
Probably jailing The Insufferable One for the rest of Trump’s life would help cure the intolerable ranking of the California economy.

I disagree, it’s not people that trot this out, it’s Newsom that does it. Newsom has become a a bit of a meme on this subject. A reporter will ask hey, how come California has the highest unemployment rate of any state and highest taxes and the most homelessness? He will come back with “California is crushing it, we’re the 4th largest economy in the world blah blah fucking blah.”
