You may counter that we eat foods like chicken wings and sandwiches with fingers too, but I would say that a) it is qualitatively different than rice, and b) people don't usually eat those foods during interviews.
If a southern Republican moved to NYC and ran for office (a real-life Arthur Branch perhaps?) and he stuffed his face with barbecue ribs or lemon pepper wet wings, he would also be seen as nekulturny. Why should Rafiq Zohran be given a pass just because he is Muslim?

I have a lot of problems with him but this isn't one of them. So what, it's a cultural signal. It's not unreasonable by the standards of the culture it comes from.

You would do better at making a case against him if you stick with the things that are actually harmful.

Eating biryani with one's fingers? I've eaten many similar meals, like rice straight out of the pot, but I always use utensils, because it's much easier to scoop up the meal with a fork or a spoon, though a knife may also do.

We have a convicted felon for president who is destroying the country, using lots of tax payer money for unnecessary wars, along with money to treat immigrants brutally, buildings that he thinks honor him, while cutting back on programs that help Americans in need including basic health care, but some of you are obsessed with the way a mayor eats certain foods that are a part of his culture, or with programs he is trying to get approved to make life more affordable in NYC! The problem here is that such people generally have very few prospects to farm up into "having their own life", and the things that impact their life are largely entirely out of their control.

But there's also this wacky issue going on where they respect the people who have the control and power because they think these people have "succeeded" or "won" somehow, despite the fact that respect for that power over them is what keeps them powerless in their own lives.

They just keep believing the lie that giving away all of their power to the powerful will empower them some day when giving away their power day-on-day is exactly what got them into this mess!

The powerful didn't get that way by giving away power to those under them, and those under them will never get their power given back.
