Roe v Wade is on deck

If it is scheduled, it’s considered ‘elective.’
Not by me.
Tom
Can you please PM me your dictionary, so I can better understand the meaning of the words you have arbitrarily decided to redefine?
Just ask the people around you what they mean by "elective" surgery (or elective anything else). What I am doing is using the vernacular. Insisting on referring to Mom's abortion as elective puts it in a category with liposuction and boob jobs. I really don't much care about medical lingo when it's utterly irrelevant.
Tom
Yes, when talking about medical issues, medical lingo is irrelevant.

We need to use medical terminology as it is used by medical professionals and to avoid sentimentality and emotion.
But, back here in reality...
People like Governor Hot Wheels uses the huge numbers of "elective" abortions to explain why Texas needs their laws preventing people from murdering their children.

And so, "using comically naive understandings to push an agenda". Good job finding one of the intended targets for my comment!

Tom
Yes, which is why understanding medical lingo is important.

Do you think that the people trying to trash women's reproductive rights are discussing medical issues? That they generally understand them?
Tom
No, hence why he and I both discussed some aspect of obscene naivety being used to push agendas.

The point being that because medical establishment is not about to change the meaning of "elective", it's kind of important to trash and reject those who, after hearing it's meaning, slip right back into using the meaning inappropriately.

Tom
No, that’s the point: they take advantage of people’s lack of understanding.

No, hence why he and I both discussed some aspect of obscene naivety being used to push agendas.
Let me know when you understand the difference between specialized vocabulary and the vernacular.

Please let us know when you have learned that vernacular is intentionally laced with medical jargon by anti-abortion zealots in deliberate attempts to misinform.

Demogogues are using the vernacular to mischaracterize reality to push their agenda on the ignorant and you defend it.

I think that they deliberately choose language to inflame emotions and count on emotions to override thinking.

We hear a lot about fetal heartbeats: if a fetal heartbeat can be heard then in some states, no abortion can happen, even if the woman’s life depends upon terminating the pregnancy. Even if conditions exist that make it impossible to carry the pregnancy to viability.

Here’s the thing: It is possible to take a fertilized chicken egg and open it and to take a few of those fetal chick cells and culture them in appropriate medium Abd if everything goes well, that clump of cells will begin to have a ‘heart beat.’ It can never grow into a chick, even if some perfect artificial egg/incubator to receive those cells existed.

It’s easy enough that in fact, I’ve done it as an undergrad.

So the heartbeat test is just to play on emotions and override thinking or understanding information.

Abortion is a red meat issue for conservatives. It invoked in people’s minds the image of a sweet, dimpled little baby, so precious! What a horrible thing to even think about ending that baby’s life!

Never mind that if you let the mother die you lose the baby as well.

But that red meat issue allows politicians to gin up a lot of emotion, primarily fear of allowing other people freedom. Freedom to make choices that you don’t think k you’d make in that woman’s ( or child’s) place. How could they! How evil!

If it is scheduled, it’s considered ‘elective.’ My c-sections were considered ‘elective’ because they were scheduled and not performed in an emergency situation.
I don't think it's quite that black and white.

"You need this surgery or you could die soon. We'll schedule you for tomorrow morning."

Which I guess puts us back to people clinging to comically naive interpretations to push agendas, and stepping out in front of a comment.

Let me know when you realize that the vernacular is what most of us mean by words.

When I was a student there were mandatory subjects and elective subjects. What does that have to do with medical jargon?

I return the question to you, because you jumped in front of the original comment. As a mechanism, however, you keep criticizing us for calling out against those who conflate the medical literature's text into a purposeful vernacular misinterpretation.

Tom
The reason it is important is that using vague definitions is extremely unhelpful and often extremely inaccurate when discussing medical issues. When talking about legislation, the difference between vernacular and medical terms can and dues lead to disastrous results.

Like declaring medically necessary abortions "on-demand" because they refuse to recognize the difference between vernacular "elective" and an easy-but-wrong way of attaching a definition to its utterance.

They are using women’s medical concerns for political points. The goal is power and to remove power from women, to control women.
