It might be related to an either-or position some extremists take but it is firmly rooted in the history of police officers disregarding and failing to investigate reports of rape and sexual assaults. It's related to the radfem article of faith that "women don't lie about rape". That's the reason that radical feminist "National Organization for Women" continued to support false rape accuser Jackie Coakley even after it was determined that she fabricated the whole thing. The glaring absence of verify is the reason "believe women" became a slogan.
Remember when the Ohio AG found out about all the untested rape kits gathering dust in police departments across his state and secured funding to have them tested?
Forensic scientists with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) have now analyzed all 13,931 rape kits submitted by local law enforcement for DNA testing as part of Attorney General DeWine’s Sexual Assault Kit (SAK) Testing Initiative. A total of 8,648 DNA profiles have been uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) as a result of the testing, and 5,024 matches to offender DNA and/or DNA collected from the scenes of other crimes have occurred to-date. Charges have been filed against hundreds of attackers.
The nearly 14,000 sexual assault kits submitted as part of the initiative were connected to attacks that occurred between 1971 and 2014. The Cleveland Police Department submitted the largest number of kits (4,418), followed by the Toledo Police Department (1,802), Akron Police Department (1,432), Columbus Police Department (482), Springfield Police Department (367), and Cincinnati Police Department (338).
A full list of submitting agencies and CODIS hits per agency can be found here.
The majority of CODIS hits obtained as a result of the DNA testing linked two cases together, but 300 DNA profiles were linked to between three and 18 cases. In total, those 300 serial offenders were linked by DNA to 1,127 crimes in the CODIS database.
Three hundred serial sex offenders discovered and tens of thousands more persons linked to other crimes, all because the "verify" part finally happened.
I agree with you that "believe women" should be "believe persons reporting crimes are truthfully reporting what they genuinely believed happened while still understanding that they might be mistaken or misremembering details and possibly still in shock, and also keeping in mind that while ~95% of the time evidence can be found that supports the claims there are times when the claims are either unfounded or false, so it is extremely important to diligently and conscientiously investigate the claims in order to verify them". That's a lot of words, though.
Maybe we should just say "Police officers should do their jobs diligently and conscientiously when they receive reports of crimes and not ignore them".
