Let's say your college told you (and all other professors) as a condition of employment to research your family history and document and post all past familial slavery connections on the door of your office. Would you welcome that?

Not equivalent. A corporation I am not, nor do I have any sealed files that I'm hiding from the public about my geneaology. But if a student asked me about that, I would answer them seriously and honestly, not rail at them insanely about how they were trying to start a "race riot" by asking. I would assume that they had their reasons for wanting to know, and as a public employee I generally try to be as transparent as I can be about who I am and where I'm from and so forth.

Employer gets trickier, though. They really are not supposed to ask personal questions like that for any reason, and I suspect the union would have words.

If "their" goal is to start a "race riot", why not just buy a billboard downtown that says "J.P. Morgan Chase used human beings as loan collateral. Are you okay with that?" There'd be no need for a legislative act, you could just do that. So why haven't "they"?

There’s no cover up, and no suppression. What you’re supporting is a concerted initiative to dig up dirt from over five generations ago, which nobody alive today had any involvement in, and which was legal at the time. It’s not legal now, and I completely agree that it should be. But the fact remains that it was legal and accepted at the time.

Drop the bullshit. It used to be legal, that isn’t in dispute. It also used to legal to beat the crap out of your wife, hunt endangered animals, and imprison people for being gay. I don’t think those are unimportant by any means, but I do understand that social mores and beliefs change over time.

Well aware. I know some of the people who have done research for that task force, in fact. But it's not actually going to happen. Even most of the people involved are well aware that any intiative for a direct payment will end eventually with a governor's veto, if it even gets that far. And your "nightmare scenario" of individual whites paying individual blacks reparations, as opposed to the government as a whole paying reparations to citizens who have been harmed by it, is nothing but a fantasy on your part. It has never been proposed.

Also, you are ignorant of some very important parts of California's history. Chattel slavery was practiced here for well more than a century, involuntary servitude is still legal within our prison system, and illegal human trafficking plagues us to this day. If you actually read Wikipedia links instead of just posting them, you'd learn some things. Your own link tells the story perfectly clearly, had you paused to read it. The activities of the Reparations task force are not some secret conspiracy, nor are they as you describe.
