More celebrities passing

John Anderson died too.
When I was a morning show producer for a country station, we did a version of his song "Money In The Bank" to celebrate the opening of Bank One Ballpark and the debut of Major League Baseball in Phoenix. Ours was "A Ballpark Named After A Bank" and our co-host had a dead-on John Anderson impression. It was "take your daughter to work day" and mine was there sitting through all the takes, re-takes, and mixing of the song. Poor thing probably was traumatized listening to it over and over again...

Oh no.. :(

We've lost Dolores Huerta.

She was working, working, working, right to the end. Saw her speak last year, we sang her a Feliz Cumpleaños song even though it was two weeks early. She agreed to stay to sign photographs after, and a room of mainly 16-30 year old students formed a line straight out the door to do so. I can't get these kids to wait patiently for anything. But Dolores was everyone's grandma.

Gervais struggles to get through the scene.

Stewart: There's Rooney and Beckham and then Posh Spice walks in and
Gervais: Her cothes fall off?
Stewart: Instantly!

And now Patrick Stewart. Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Damn. It’s a red shirt kind of week.

I'm at a loss. Too many good people gone this month. How is our country supposed to hold its moral core with all of its good examples in the grave, their memories subject to whatever the living feel like turning them into?

Continue following their example as best as you can, or if you can, be an example. A lesson I learned about 40 years ago from my dad - though I'm sure he never intended to pass it on so soon - was "live your life in such a way that your funeral is standing room only."

I try to live up to that example.

Stewart is a big one for me. Celebrities passing at an old age usually isn't much of a thing, especially if they were suffering from mental decline. But Stewart became an icon. There was only one Kirk, so he became the only Picard. It just felt like the world wasn't ready to lose Stewart yet. Avery Brooks better live to be 140! He is the darn Emissary and all. Then the captains kind of drop from there.

Koenig was tough because he was one of my favorite villains of all time from B5. So subtle, so effective, so well played, the one-off character became a much more important one.

I am a huge B5 fan (even got to have a lovely conversation with Ms. Claudia Christian awhile back) and yeah...Bester was fantastic. Walter imbued him with a gleeful villainy but also a deep and tragic back story. Now that I think about it, the B5 cast has suffered so many losses...from main characters like G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and Delenn (Mira Furlan) to supporting cast like Koenig, Vir (Stephen Furst) and even Zathras.

Koenig greatly outlived a large number of them, including Franklin, Garibaldi, and Sinclair. There is almost no one left!

Avery Brooks

Avery Brooks (Sisko) was easily the equal to Stewart (Picard) as a Star Fleet Captain. I'd rank both a bit above Kirk and all above Janeway.
The less said about Janeway (Voyager), the better.
I wish that Brooks would come out again some day. He did DS9 and left. Truly sad. So many of us loved his work.
Well, he'll be back when the Prophets say he is ready. He is still resting and recovering from the somewhat anti-climatic battle with Gul-du-Kat.

I recall that in the late summer of 1987 while looking for a permanent career out of grad school I got myself a new VCR. It was a nice one. I admired it a lot. Its entire purpose was to record Star Trek TNG each week. That image I have of admiring this new machine, reading the manual, and understanding how to set the timed record is inseperable from TNG, is a strong memory. That was when I was back with my parents for a short time after grad school.

Later after I moved to a new house I recall my future wife, my wife now, being a bit put out that I didn't want to go out Saturday nignts because of Star Trek TNG. She was only a little put out because we were already living together and she didn't really want to go out anyway..

And I recorded TNG every week. I got them all first run on my VCR. SometimesI got the commercials too.
