Climate Change(d)?

Let's trigger someone with data analysis and labels. Long story short, it looks at temperature / heat waves more broadly. Their extent in temp as well as portion of the globe it impacts.

It is another way to see how things have changed since the 50s. Changed, in the sense of trending in one direction.
You are correct. What is weird right now is that we are visiting Indy and the temps are in the 70s, about 12 to 15 degrees above average, while the temps in our town in Georgia are almost the same as here. Some days, it's ever warmer in Indy than it is in Georgia. And, this has been going on for weeks, not just a few abnormal days. It's really not that hard to see all the evidence of human caused climate change if one is open minded and willing to accept the science. Trump denies climate change but he is an idiot, and his cult believes whatever he says.
I was at Indy for the IMSA 6 hour event a couple years ago in Mid-Sept, and it was close to 90. Me and heat at race tracks! But that is weather. The Reuters analysis is much broader climate.

Oh noes!!! Arctic expert predicts final collapse of sea ice within four years !!!!!

One of the world's leading ice experts has predicted the final collapse of Arctic sea ice in summer months within four years. In what he calls a "global disaster" now unfolding in northern latitudes as the sea area that freezes and melts each year shrinks to its lowest extent ever recorded, Prof Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University calls for "urgent" consideration of new ideas to reduce global temperatures.
"I have been predicting [the collapse of sea ice in summer months] for many years. This collapse, I predicted would occur in 2015-16 at which time the summer Arctic (August to September) would become ice-free. The final collapse towards that state is now happening and will probably be complete by those dates".

Teh Grauniad article from 2012!!!

It really is a religion for you lot.

A rapture like cult.

It is a catastrophic 64f and a little rain today. #prayforsantamonica.

https://scienceinsights.org/why-do-people-deny-climate-change-psychology-explained/

People deny climate change not because they lack access to scientific evidence, but because accepting it conflicts with their identity, values, and sense of security. The scientific consensus is overwhelming: 97 percent of actively publishing climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming. Yet significant portions of the public reject or downplay this reality. The reasons are psychological, political, economic, and sometimes deliberately manufactured.

The Brain’s Defense Against Uncomfortable Facts

When a piece of information threatens something you believe about yourself or the world, your brain doesn’t process it neutrally. It triggers cognitive dissonance, the uncomfortable tension that arises when new facts clash with existing beliefs. Brain regions involved in conflict detection and emotional distress light up, creating a strong urge to resolve the tension. And the easiest way to resolve it isn’t to change your worldview. It’s to dismiss the information.

Political Identity Is the Strongest Predictor

Political Identity Is the Strongest Predictor
Of all the factors researchers have studied, political ideology is the most consistent predictor of climate change skepticism. People who identify as more politically conservative are significantly more likely to doubt that climate change is happening, that humans are causing it, or that it requires urgent action. In one study, political orientation alone accounted for a substantial share of the variation in skepticism across multiple dimensions of the issue, outweighing age, sex, and religious views.

Poor Twiz. it appears as if he suffers from some type of cognitive dissonance, probably due to his political views. That's what voting for Trump does to one's brain. 😥

Oh and it's a lovely 72 degrees today in Indy, about 10 degrees above average and yesterday it was 17 above average.

Poor southernhybrid is disappointed that the rapture has not happened yet and is baffled as to why most people don't buy into it.

Hang in there kiddo.

See this article from 2016 about the scientist who missed the prediction of an ice-free arctic:

Wadhams was criticised for his predictions by several other high-ranking members of scientific community, with Dr Ed Hawkins of the University of Reading accusing the Cambridge professor of risking damage to the reputation of the scientific community by “crying wolf”.

In a comment on Hawkins’ article, Betts said: “When someone talks up imminent catastrophe, they might think they are getting a quick win by getting a scary story out there, but in the long term it will be an own goal.”

And we are witnessing the impacts of just that...

Comments I have seen online suggest that his prediction was not scientifically sound in the first place. For example:

https://www.quora.com/In-2013-Professor-Peter-Wadhams-from-Cambridge-University-predicted-that-the-Arctic-would-be-ice-free-by-2016-due-to-climate-change-How-did-he-get-it-so-wrong said:
His prediction that the Artic would hit an ice-free summer in 2020 (meaning less than 1m sq km of ice cover at the lowest point) was mostly wrong because it was based on trend lines and maths, rather than climate models. He said so himself when he made the prediction.

Had sea-ice minimum followed the trend lines then he would have been correct, but the summer of 2014 sharply bucked the trend and immediately pushed back the ice-free deadline by at least 2–3 years.

Whilst his estimate for the actual year of a sea ice minimum below 1m sqm was wrong, the decline in sea ice continues apace.

20 years ago the sea ice minimum in the Arctic saw coverage of close to 6.7m sq km.

15 years ago that was 5.8m sq km.

10 years ago it was 4.3m sq km.

Then came the buck in the trend. Even so, 5 years ago it was still down to 4.1m sq km.

In 2020 it went down to 3.7 sq km.

This year, so far, sea ice has been lower than the same time last year.

Wadhams was wrong on the exact year of an ice-free summer because he simply read trends and extrapolated. But that does not change the fact that ice cover is reducing year on year and - whenever it happens - an ice-free summer will happen soon.

It is unfortunate that he made such a prediction. It should be noted that he was also selling a book at the time and also that he is an oceanographer and not a climate scientist. Even scientists are human and may be susceptible to bias. That is why there is such a thing as "consensus", where individual biases can be tempered by the examination of data by a variety of groups around the world.
Google Gemini says this:

By choosing a simple mathematical extrapolation over complex climate physics, Wadhams made a classic statistical error that other climate scientists immediately called out: he ignored natural variability. [1]
Mainstream climate models are complex because they simulate thermodynamic laws, shifting wind patterns, cloud formations, and multi-year ocean currents. Wadhams' trend line assumed that the Arctic climate would behave exactly the same way every single consecutive year without any random weather anomalies. When natural variability caused the ice melt to slow down temporarily between 2013 and 2016, his timeline completely collapsed. [1, 2]

The way that climate is reflected in regional weather-related phenomena reflects the chaotic nature of the entire system. We have the best ever predictive tech ever; it can nail down tomorrow’s hourly weather scenario pretty accurately even in my difficult location. But what is currently predicted for two weeks hence, will change as that time approaches. Even model based forecasting would not have justified such a stupid prediction as the very future year when arctic ice would cross an arbitrary barrier … sensationalist stupidity. This kind of shit is Climate Denialism’s evil twin.

You suffer from denialism. Get some help Bro.

Nobody is looking forward to the continuation of climate change, but most people do accept the science. Did you bother to read the link about how one's political views influence them when it comes to denying the truth? I seriously doubt it. But go ahead.....keep supporting the lies told by the idiot in office. He's cutting down trees, bringing back pollution due to his policies etc.

Are you old enough to remember the heavy smog in places like NYC or LA? I am and I recall looking at the NYC skyline as a teenager and barely being able to see the buildings due to the thick, dirty smog. It took a lot of effort to clean the air and it was actually Nixon who helped start the EPA, but now Trump is destroying the EPA, bringing back dirty air etc. It's all related to human activity, as is the rapidly changing climate but some people don't want to see the truth. Nobody can predict an exact time that something will happen, but the evidence that human activity is influencing the climate is overwhelming.

I'm old and will probably be dead before the things get really bad, but my grandkids are teenagers and there is no telling what they will have to face. It will take an enormous effort by government to change things and brings us more clean energy, more trees, bring back the regulations that the idiot overturned etc. I just don't see that happening in the near future.

Nobody is looking forward to the continuation of climate change,

Please explain how you are going to stop the earth's climate from changing for the first time ever.

Do you understand that without natural greenhouse gases Santa Monica and the world would be froze?

Not surprised. A person who suffers from denialism usually doesn't want to know the truth. It appears as if your knowledge of climate science is very limited and that's why you don't want to accept the truth. :stupid:

In a way you remind me of my bro in law. He also voted for Trump and is a denialist. Once he told us that he couldn't accept the concept of climate change because he has grandkids and he didn't want to think that a rapidly changing climate might impact their future in a negative way. :stupid:

Well over half of Americans do accept that climate change is influenced by human activity, so you've made another false claim. Educate yourself Twiz and stop making shit up.

Global Warming Beliefs

  • Americans who think global warming is happening outnumber those who think it is not by a ratio of more than 5 to 1 (72% versus 13%).
  • By a 2 to 1 margin, more Americans think global warming is mostly human-caused (58%) than mostly caused by natural changes in the environment (29%).
  • By more than a 2 to 1 margin, Americans are more likely to understand that most scientists think global warming is happening (57%) than to (erroneously) believe there is a lot of disagreement among scientists about whether it is happening (23%).
Emotional Responses to Global Warming

  • 64% of Americans say they are at least “somewhat worried” about global warming. This includes 29% who say they are “very worried.”
  • 61% of Americans underestimate the proportion of Americans who are worried about global warming, while 7% overestimate it, and 24% “don’t know enough to say.” Only 8% correctly estimate the approximate percentage of Americans who are worried about global warming.
  • Many Americans say they feel the following emotions about global warming: interested (57%), sad (48%), afraid (45%), angry (42%), hopeless (40%), or hopeful (37%).
