They came to town to "defend" a rancher who doesn't want their kind of defense.
The rally ended peacefully after residents implored them to stand down.

Then they took over a federal building, it had been closed for the weekend.

But the local residents want NO PART OF THEM

This seems like worse behavior than selling loosies. Or walking up to a cop with your hands empty.

The usual, "We will resist if force is used to take us."

The militia members have been insisting that Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward create a sanctuary so the Hammonds will be immune from surrendering. Ward met with the militiamen and rejected that demand. The militia has since labeled him an "enemy of the people." Ward said he has received emailed death threats among thousands of messages from across the country regarding the Hammonds.

Sounds like sovereign citizen garbage: "Sheriff has all power, until he refuses to do our bidding."

So what were the ranchers at the heart of this protest convicted of?

If I'm not mistaken, one of the guys involved in this takeover is Cliven Bundy's son.

Make of that what you will...

So what were the ranchers at the heart of this protest convicted of?
Arson. (To cover up poaching evidence.)

Bundy's statements do not make sense in the context of the arrest of the ranchers and the land acquisition of the refuge.

Yes, I've since found out about that. 130 acres burned. Those assholes deserve their sentence. The assholes protesting deserve mockery and jail time.

What were they threatening in the way of violence?

BUndy said he'd use violence if anyone tried to remove him from his occupation of the federal building.

In phone interviews from inside the occupied building Saturday night, Ammon Bundy and his brother, Ryan Bundy, said they are not looking to hurt anyone. But they would not rule out violence if police tried to remove them, they said.

"The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds," Ammon Bundy said.

"We're planning on staying here for years, absolutely," he added. "This is not a decision we've made at the last minute."

Okay, fine. You will of course pay rent, and for any damages to the facilities and btw, what kind of food source do you have?

Air Force, pretty please use that building for a live bombing exercise! Trading one building for getting rid of a bunch of armed troublemakers would be very worth it.

They are armed. That should qualify their occupation of a Fed Building as a death threat, and since it in the context of a political dispute, it should be conspiracy to commit terrorism by every person in there and all others who aided them.
Their whiteness would be the only reason they don't wind up dead or in prison for life.

Well, a black kid walking past police officers with a knife is worth fourteen bullets... I suppose a white adult forcibly taking over a Federal building with assault rifles and threatening to shoot police officers who come and arrest them is worth a stern talking to.

I suspect the opposite. After all, when BLMers occupied that mall and an airport in Minneapolis all they got was a citation.
I say pox on both of them.

You seem to think there is some kind of comparison between this band of cowboy idiots and the BLM people where indeed there is not. The issue in one case is HUMAN LIVES. In the case of this Bundy jackass, it is the right for him to run his cattle over land that is not his for profit. That issue is so different in terms of human rights as to be unrecognizable. I think Bundy should be taken down...and perhaps jailed...at least arrested and tried for his clownish endangerment of his idiodic followers. Organizing a militia of cowboys against the Federal Government is just plain stupid.

Were the BLMers armed with guns and thus inherently threatening to kill government employees?

Makes a big difference in what the reasonable response and resulting punishment should be. The response here should be closer to the that of the Boston Bombing than to unarmed occupier protests.
