The first in a trilogy which I continue to enjoy over a decade after its initial release. Three reasons why--the factors that I consider trademarks of the Bourne films: 1) Matt Damon's convincing performances as the amnesiac assassin who gained a conscience when he lost his memory, 2) the strong supporting casts in each film--this time out we get Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Brian Cox and a nice cameo from Clive Owen, and 3) the suspense and hard-edged action which the directors (Doug Liman here, Paul Greengrass in the sequels) treat us to. Not a classic, but a very well-executed action thriller.

I agree. I just can't understand the whole point of embedding a piece of metal in his leg that displays a bank number. Why would he do that? If not for that, the movie would be so much different.
 
I think that is explained in the next movie as well as why Bourne never had to use any of those pills from the Legacy film in The Bourne Explanations.

I know alot of people were disappointed in this adaptation of the game
But I found that if you forget that this is connected to the game in any way
Then you are left with a fun and goofy sci-fi movie
Is it brilliant?.... well no
is it entertaining? I would say yes
I may be a minority in this but I think this is worth a watch
 
I recently watched a quirky little year 2000 Belgium film, with English captions of course. Thomas In Love about an agoraphobic falling in love with a prostitute. An original comedy that I rate 7.5/10.
Rated for mature audiences, I can recommend it if you happen to run across it somewhere.

Agree with this, except I give it a 7.9 as the story is really good.
 
X-Men Days of Future Past

I never saw the first X-Men 1st Class movie, so maybe something is lost on me. For example, I don't get why the girl who used to run through walls,

now can send people back in time.

And I'm not feeling the supposed deep friendship between Eric and Charles, so maybe because

they're estranged in this movie I don't feel their connection. The fact that they might be fighting over a woman makes the lack of passion and emotion between them even more hollow. McAvoy churns up a lot of anger and fear and passion, but with Michael Fassbender doing the equivalent acting of a lump on a log, McAvoy's efforts are wasted.

Fassbender has one expression throughout this entire movie. While the rest of the acting is first rate - Jackman as Wolverine as always, being the stable backbone of the movie - the story is weak. When I left the theater, I got the strange impression that the whole future of the world depended

upon a very flaky young woman making up her mind. For all her Oscar award, Jennifer here is doing a great impression of her Katniss Everdeen character - stoic and unemotional. Which works in the Hunger Games, but not here, when Mystique is supposed to be quite a passionate person which drew the attraction of two powerful men. It's hard to see how, unless the attraction is only because she walks around half naked all the time.



Anyway. As expected with any time travel movie

these days, by changing the past, they have basically rebooted the whole series and so you can forget about any past continuity problems because like the new Star Trek franchise, the past we knew no longer exists.

Which doesn't help that the plot is full of holes and there are a lot of loose ends still hanging around

the biggest one being that they now have the technology to make the Sentinels. Once the genie is out of the bottle, no matter good intentions, you can't put it back.



But other than those things, the special effects are awesome and really cool.

I'd love to see more of the girl who can travel through worm holes,

though sometimes inexplicable. No, they don't give a good reason why Magneto

needed a stadium lifted except to wow the audience.

He wanted to keep people away from the White House and since he didn't fly any of the ticket agents over, none of the cops or anyone can enter the stadium.

 
An action oldie that surprisingly was released in 1992, I didn't realise it was that old. Action hero Steven Segal saves the day as usual. This time he is the ships cook. Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant as the terrorist leader who hijack a battle ship that has Tomahawk missiles aboard. Very good action flick titled Under Siege I rate it highly for it's entertainment value. 7.5/10
 
10 Things I Hate About You. Sad to see Heath Ledger, alive and glowing and full of promise. 7/10

A version of Macbeth set in the Melbourne underworld. Because of the context you got no sense of the enormity of slaying Duncan. It just came off as business-as-usual gang war. Pity. 6/10

I agree that Under Siege is amongst the best written of this type of film.
 
Saw the latest Star Trek. What a load of crap. Didn't even make an half-hearted attempt to stick to the story arc or the rules of the universe. It's Star Trek. It's for nerds. It has a vibe the fans expect. The acting can be shit. The story lame. But the science has to be semi-plausible and the details need to match. Details matter. Having Scotty say stuff like "for the love of God". No... No... No... Takes me right out of Star Trek and into regular action sci-fi world. And if we make that comparison this film loses. Cutting down Klingons as if they're Vietcong in Rambo! Come on. They're not even trying. I didn't find anything in this movie that awoke my inner nerd. I just kept yawning and looking at my watch. (2/10)

The Enterprise series attempt to reboot the franchise by making it more low brow and actiony failed. I hope they'll learn soon. I get the business case. They can crap Star Trek nerds in the mouth since they know they'll go and see it anyway. So they completely target non fans. Well... they did the same shit with the 2009 movie. So this time I downloaded this from a pirate site.

The Iron Mask

This is the 1929 silent film with Douglas Fairbanks, adapted from Dumas' novel The Vicomte of Bragelonne, with Fairbanks resuming the role of D'Artagnan. The final silent film of his career is one of his best. Although Fairbanks made a handful of unsuccessful talkies, I prefer to see this excellent outing as bringing the curtain down on the career of one of the most charismatic stars ever.

The Other Boleyn Girl

So this started out kinda interesting
But it quickly went downhill, up another hill and down that one as well
Pretty much everything about this movie fails
The love story fails
The characters are all utterly stupid
Even the costuming was bland and uninteresting
They took real life people (Fascinating real life people) and made them all boring and terrible
Except for one and that was Ana Torrent as Katherine of Aragon who is about the only person to escape this movie with any dignity
So just give this one a miss

The Proposal

So we move onto a romantic comedy with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock
And it isn't bad
It isn't particularly interesting either and it is pretty easy to imagine a guy with a checklist behind the camera ticking off each romcom plot point along the way
If there is nothing on then you could do worse then this but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

So this is the sequel to the big hit the Hunger Games
And I guess if you like the first movie this this one should be right up your alley
But for me the villains never really evolve to meet the new ideas of the brewing revolution, seeming to react with all the subtlety and intelligence of a 5 year old stealing a smaller kids lunch money
Which means they are not really menacing or interesting when the "big twist" happens
The "Love triangle" is just laughable and silly
And the whole "Hunger Games" bit is even more drab and sanitised then the first with most deaths being off screen and the contestants mostly just being faces with little to no personality behind them (Even more so then the first movie)
But at least they solved the excessive shaky cam problem the first had
So some enjoyment but overall not that impressive

The Birds

So I finally got around to some Hitchcock starting with his killer birds
And while I liked it, I wasn't blown away by it
Mostly I just found it to be a little too slow
And I know Hitchcock is all about slowly building suspense, but I thought this one dragged alot at the start
When the birds began to actually get involved to a greater degree this movie really picked up and in the last 1/3 of the movie there are some awesome moments
But the start was a bit much for my liking

Psycho

Holy cow was Anthony Perkins a creepy fellow as Norman Bates
And I think he is one of the reasons I liked this movie more then Birds
That guy on his own was worth the movie
And overall I liked the pacing of this more
And I already knew the ending before seeing this but I don;t think it diminished my view of his performance at all
Definitely a good movie


Wheels on Meals

So this is an early Jackie Chan movie and boy is it a stinker
Pretty much all its appeal is in the last 25 minutes or so
Everything before that is just slow, boring and tortuous .......nothing
Seriously nothing happens for about 4/5 of the movie
So just youtube the last part and skip the rest

Thor 2: The Dark World

Now this movie has it's flaws (Natalie Portman kinda fails against the other actors around her)
But dangit I still just love this movie
I love Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Chris Hemsworth as Thor
I love Rene Russon kicking the bad guys butt
I love the sepctacle and what they tried to do
Flawed yes, but IMO a good flawed and entertaining all round

Iron Man
7/10
The first Iron Man movie still holds up really well IMO
The effects are all brilliant, the acting is all well done and the story is well paced and action packed
So whatever flaws this movie has are easily forgotten and the overall presentation still ranks among Marvels best

The Avengers
9/10
This movie is awesome
It is pure spectacle and it hits every superhero nerdy fantasy button I have
So yeah
I love it
 
Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999)

Last of 90s Gamera trilogy.

The first act promised a darker, more complex story with better acting.

The end result was a confusing story with lame monster battles.

Possibly the worst of the trilogy.

For the first film this holds true. The second film however, was very seriously about them being faces. They have to sell her image as a face to help drive a rebellion. The runner of the games also needed to sell her devotion to the other faces and how she wouldn't betray them. She is the face of the rebellion. Her image is critical!

The Negotiator starring a galaxy of fine stars like Kevin Spacey, Samuel L. Jackson and others too numerous to mention. It's a 1998 thriller where a good guy cop [Jackson] is charged with the assassination of his partner. He in desperation to clear his name takes hostages while trying to find out who killed his partner and the conspiracy to frame him.
Highly recommended for those who may have missed this gem. 9/10

It's the Biblical story of Jesus with the names replaced. There's nothing subtle about it. If you watch it again, with this in mind, I promise you that the allegory will stick out like a sore thumb. It's really in-your-face.

Or Google it. I did a quick google of blogs and reviews talking about it's Christ allegory. 53 200 hits. I'm not the first to spot it.

It fits well into the general vibe of 50'ies Hollywood science fiction. Extremely conservative and doing their best to cement stereotypes and wide spread irrational fears. It was a time when Americans were paranoid to the extreme and saw enemies in every bush. Not to mention those enemies poisoning "our children" with drugs, mind control lasers, fluoride and evil progressive ideas. I love 50'ies science fiction. But not because they're good. But because they're so awful and cringeworthy. It should be mentioned that it was a time when an alarmingly large proportion of adult Americans were on amphetamines and valium. Paranoia and anxiety being common side effects of prolonged usage. I digress.

Indeed. This is one of my favorite films of the genre, yet it is almost like the film was never made, rarely on television, despite there being so many channels these days. One of Paul Giamatti's earlier films, before he was the Paul Giamatti.
 
Fantastic Voyage 1966 - Hadn't seen this one since I was a kid. Nice ensemble acting all around, special effects okay for their time. Overall not bad, but the evolution=bad and god=good was a big turn-off for me. Too much oohing and aaahing at "God's creation". The General Carter character reminded me of Lloyd Bridges' McCrosky character form Airplane! (looks like I picked the wrong week to give up sugar, coffee, etc....). And watching a bunch of guys pawing at Raquel Welch wasn't quite the turn-on I remembered it being. 6/10

When Worlds Collide 1951 - Made on a shoestring budget and about a decade before the start of the space race, so it's easy to look past how they imagined space travel and rockets. The biggest downfall really came from the small budget - There is sense of the scale of the global nature of the disaster. When Zyra passes the Earth and causes widespread destruction, the movie focuses on a small group of people in a building, and intersperses that with a few scenes of miniatures getting flooded or swept away. The scene at the UN where the scientists are presenting their findings was well done - there are definitely parallels that can be drawn between the events in the movie and the current Climate Change debate. I found Barbara Rush to be simply adorable. 4/10
