Last I heard they encountered a roadblock and tried to evade it. They crashed, some charged the feds.

According to the feds, they were pulled over at a traffic stop and told to surrender. Most of them did.
According to Ammon Bundy, he was already in the back of a police car when he saw the dead guy raise his hands over his head in surrender, when they shot him in the face. At least, that's what some patriots are saying his wife says he texted to her from the back of the police car. Some of the patriotic websites are calling these third-hand accounts 'eyewitness' accounts of 'the murder.'

So, the guy who said he'd rather die than go to prison either lied about his statement and was surrendering when they killed him, or Ammon Bundy may not have had the best view of what was going on as they tried to get the last guy out of the car.

Seems odd that if they were intending to MURDER these patriots for daring to stand up for their rights, that the feds only killed one guy. You'd think they could arrange an effective escape attempt and shoot them all.

Don't they restrain your hands if you are arrested or is that just a TV drama thing? It'd be hard to communicate anything like that.

A second vehicle — which contained Ryan Bundy, Ryan Payne, Shawna Cox, Finicum and an unidentified 18-year-old woman — went around their stopped comrades’ vehicle but ran into a blockade about a mile away.
“There happened to be some arguments between the guys in the truck,” Lee said. “Somehow they got Ryan Payne pulled out of the truck, apparently. LaVoy had took off — he ended up hitting a snowbank, I guess, trying to get around the blockade. After he hit that snowbank, he came out of that truck and he charged at the law enforcement (officers) — as I understand it.”

The bodyguard said Cox and Payne each told him that Finicum charged toward officers before he was shot, and he explicitly denied that the rancher had surrendered or complied with law enforcement.
“He was not on his knees, none of that,” McConnell said. “He was none of that nonsense. You know, that was a miscommunication on somebody else’s part. But he went after them. He charged them.

As law enforcement moved in on Wednesday to contain militants who have occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for weeks, a broadcast from inside the refuge showed angry militiamen promising a “bloodbath.”

A live video feed from the DefendYourBase YouTube channel, showed several militants operating a large excavator. At least one of the militants was dressed in military-style gear and carrying a rifle.
“The media has been ordered to leave, and that means they are coming to kill us and they don’t want them to see that!” the man yelled into the camera. “They’re going to murder all of us and the media are cowards.”

The Bundy crowd contains no patriots. You seize a federal building and try to repurpose federal land from wildlife refuge to cattle grazing and mining and do so while waving around loaded firearms, you get shot. Even a moron knows that. This band of armed idiots is on its way down. Part of the problem has been the federal officers who do not really believe in the goals of our federal government and kept cutting this narcissistic band of ruffians slack. The did one thing right so far, in not attacking and destroying the building directly and just waiting them out.

While advocating for the Hammonds’ release, the militia claimed the federal government has no jurisdiction over the Malheur refuge.Since then, Burns residents have urged the militia to leave at a series of community meetings. Bundy and the other occupiers have repeatedly refused to do so.
More militiamen from around the country drove in truck by truck to join the cause on January 20. The heavily armed militants believe their cause is not only just, but an act of divine intervention.
Governor Brown recently spoke out against the occupation, urging the militants to leave as quickly as possible. In a one-on-one interview with KOIN 6 News on Monday, Brown said the situation was “intolerable”.
“It is absolutely unacceptable for this to continue,” Governor Brown said. “The very fabric of the Burns community is being ripped apart by this occupation.”
The Burns Paiute Tribe also asked the U.S. Department of Justice to prevent the armed group from moving freely on and off the national wildlife refuge.

They are not representing the people, farmers and ranchers, local citizens, county citizens, state citizens, native american citizens in any way.

They are just a bunch of over aged juvenile delinquents with guns trying to bully their way to legitimacy. I'm glad these thugs are being put behind bars for breaking the laws of the land. beyond what is in the exerpt Dwight and Steve Hammond have disavowed the 'help' from these criminals. Indian tribes, actual citizens with standing about land use, denounce the actions of this band of scumbags. The local sheriff wants them gone. Burns citizens want them gone. County government wants them gone. State government wants them gone. Refuge users and caretakers want them gone.

This band of thugers have no justification in local, county, state, or federal law or practice.

As for justifying anything there is nothing which they can justify. My reading of history, primarily recent history, is that the FEDs bought up properties of many who had abandoned the land during the depression so taking land just doesn't fly.Let me correct a NRA claim. The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a well trained person under cover of the law with a gun.

What we need to concentrate on is letting citizens be citizens going about the business of living their lives, keeping guns free from the possibility of misuse by one against another or oneself, and assuring those charged with responsibility to protect ad to serve are trained to protect citizens and life with as little or no taking of life.
