Police, demonstrators clash at Andrew Loku protest, while victim’s uncle calls for video
A hammer-wielding man who apparently had psychiatric problems got shot by police, and since he was from Sudan, #BLMers can't see past his skin color and are protesting.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, the civilian watchdog that probes deaths involving police, announced Friday that the unnamed officer who shot Loku last July had used justifiable force against Loku.
The SIU ruling prompted demonstrations by Black Lives Matter protesters outside city hall and police headquarters downtown beginning Sunday and throughout the day Monday. The protest at police headquarters became the scene of a confrontation in the evening, as officers pushed their way past demonstrators to extinguish their fire and dismantle their tents.
The case seems pretty open and shut though.
A summary of the SIU investigation released by the watchdog says police were called around midnight July 5, 2015, after receiving a 911 call stating Loku was inside a neighbour’s apartment, armed with a hammer and threatening to kill the tenant. Two officers arrived on scene, drew their weapons and ordered Loku to stop and drop the hammer.
According to the SIU news release, Loku did not follow the commands, walked toward officers and said: “What you gonna do? Come on, shoot me.” As he advanced toward the two officers, one of them shot Loku twice in the chest.
“Confronted with an armed and violent suspect who had neared to within three metres or less and was refusing to stop, I am satisfied that the subject officer fired his weapon believing it to be necessary to thwart an imminent hammer attack,” SIU director Tony Loparco said in a statement.

P.S.: It says he was father of five. Why do women love to go for the loco ones?

This is exactly why I've long been in favour of banning the ownership of hammers by private individuals in Canada. How many people need to die before the government finally decides to take action?

Well...his life mattered to me, right up until he came at police officers with a hammer telling them to shoot him. Now his kids lives matter and this is going to mess them up something awful (as if having a parent with serious psychiatric problems wasn't enough!)

The case does appear pretty open and shut.

P.S.: It doesn't say how long he's had psychiatric problems. They aren't all from birth. For all you know, he was a good person and his psychiatric problems just started...thus making your hobby horse best left in the closet for this discussion.

That's actually pretty bad ass...protesters brought a bunch of wood to start a fire...Toronto police...douse it with a flame retardant tar, drop the mic, go back inside.

Even though it's chilly out, there was no need for them to try and start a fire. I know where that police station is and there's a Tim Horton's just across the road where they can go to warm up if they need to.

From the cited article in the OP

Hicks says she had managed to calm down an agitated Loku, who had been complaining about his inability to sleep because of noise coming from the apartment above him. She says that by the time police arrived she was in the process of bringing Loku back to her apartment.

“I had his hand to the side of his legs, my hands were with his hands. So how the hell can his hands be raised?” she said last week.
So, it is not such a clear cut case. Apparently the protesters want the release of the alleged video. Seems like a pretty reasonable request. One wonders why the video has not been released.

Derec, how come you decided not to include this part of the article?

You thought it wasn't important that the protest was about asking for information? Or that there was a witness who said he was NOT approaching the police with a raised hand? And that they just want the video which shows that one way or the other?

But Timon — alongside multiple groups including the African Canadian Legal Clinic and Black Lives Matter — is calling for the release of additional information about the SIU’s investigation, including the release of the video. The SIU’s summary of events does not provide any detail about what can be seen in the video.

Timon also wants to know how much weight was given to witness accounts from Loku’s neighbours, specifically Robin Hicks, the only known civilian witness to the shooting.

This seems very important to the story. What made you decide to not show it?

Because a fair and balanced discussion of the events would likely detract from his fake outrage at the idea of black people protesting. Black people who get killed by cops are all thugs who had it coming. Also note the fake outrage at the thought of black people fathering many children. Derec probably has trouble sleeping at night thinking about how the black thugs are being fruitful and multiplying while he can't get a woman to go out with him.

What the BLM protesters say and the truth are usually far apart, I don't blame him for omitting that part of it. The video (if there is such) is relevant.

I didn't post anything about what BLM protesters say. What are you talking about?

I mentioned the ACTUAL WITNESS who was THERE.
Oh! Are we supposed to assume she's a protester and therefore lying! Oh! I see what you did there. Cleverly turned a witness into a lying protester. That's slick, Loren. Slick.

The "u" in "favour" is so gay.
