SW Labor environment spokesman Luke Foley has branded senior Nationals, including Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner and federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce, "deranged" over their response to the killing of a government employee by a farmer involved in a land-clearing dispute.

Mr Foley said the comments sought to "justify" or "explain away" the alleged shooting murder of environment compliance officer Glen Turner on Tuesday and were of "the same mindset that led to right-wing American extremists committing the Oklahoma bombing".

"For politicians as senior as the Deputy Premier of the state and the federal Agriculture Minister to endorse rage against land-clearing laws is a betrayal of their offices," Mr Foley said.

"Are some of Australia's conservatives now so angry and deranged that they can explain way or 'understand' armed attacks on government employees?

"Murder should be condemned in all circumstances," Mr Foley said.

"Surely all mainstream politicians in Australia should unequivocally condemn taking up arms against one's government."

NSW Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser, also a member of the Nationals, was quoted on Friday as describing the alleged murder of Mr Turner by farmer Ian Turnbull at Croppa Creek, north of Moree, as "a tragic event that I think has been brought about by bad legislation".

Mr Stoner, who is leader of the NSW Nationals, was quoted in the same newspaper article as stating that NSW land clearing laws "have been a sore point in farming communities since they were introduced by a Labor-Greens alliance in 2003".

up in Moree northern NSW - A family of land owning rednecks finally went over the top and shot a government employee of a local council. No one in the rural community is the least bit concerned and reckon the victim got what he deserved - the local conservative political party and its leader blamed past legislators for the gun going off. At least the ARA blames the shooter not the weapon or other outside influence. It will be curious to see what other advancement can be made in Australian politics as we grow and learn .

surprising, I know very little of Australia but this comes as a shock.

How do we know he is/was a right wing maniac? SW Labour environment spokesman Luke Foley is not exactly an unbiased commentator.

You would have to understand rednecks.

John Green calls them "hill people".

The reason a redneck's neck is red is because they spend their days working in the sun and lack the natural pigmentation which protects darker skinned peoples. This would make them agricultural people, but since land is cheaper in the hills, plenty of rednecks chose to move up land.

The term "redneck" is the only racial slur which can be used on TFT, along with the associated bigotry, without a great deal of complaint

I'm pretty sure that having a sunburn doesn't qualify you as being a different race; which also means it can't be a racial slur.

You are very wrong on this point, but you do confirm mine.

You'll have to explain exactly how a white person getting a sunburn from working out in the sun too long identifies them as part of a distinct race or ethnicity that makes them ethnically/racially different from the white people who know how to use sunscreen and/or stay indoors; and how therefore using a word that refers to those people in an insulting manner constitutes a *racial* slur as opposed to just an insult referring to a specific subset of white people; because it sounds like complete and utter bullshit.

Redneck is a slur against Americans from a particular geographic region who conform (entirely or just superficially) to certain stereotypes. It may be a slur; but it sure as fuck isn't a racial one; since race isn't defined by how you act or what region you're from.

Silly me. I've spent all these years taking offense at this word and now discover it has nothing to do with my race. What was I thinking?

If I call the immigrant who works behind the cash register a Paky, does he have no right to be insulted because Pakistani is not a race.

Your sarcasm aside, it really isn't a racial slur. Calling someone a Paky isn't a racial slur either because Pakistani isn't a race. Paky is an ethnic slur, not a racial one. However, 'redneck' is no more an ethnicity than it is race, so redneck is neither a racial nor an ethnic slur. None of this means you can't take offense to people using the term; but for fuck's sake, don't pretend that it's worse than it actually is by trying to elevate it to the realm of racial bigotry. White people calling other white people 'rednecks' is not racism. (At this point I might make a joke about how rednecks might have trouble understanding the point, but I imagine it wouldn't be appreciated so I'll just suggest in parentheses that I'd make the joke but won't while actually making the joke anyway by doing so, since doing it that way is funnier than either just making the joke or not making it at all)

Whatever you say, Dutchboy.

The local term is bogans.

I've heard that before and discussed it with some Australian friends. It seems there is a vast difference in bogan culture and American Redneck culture. Of course, all I know about bogans is what I have been told by people who hold the kind of bigotry which helped coin the term "redneck" in America.

I agree that compared directly to each other there are glaring differences between the two. The relative position of the groups in society though I think is quite comparable.

There's a new reality show on TV here called Bogan Hunters, with the aim of finding Australia's greatest bogan. I haven't seen it but YouTube clips are available. Can't say there won't be bigotry but judging from the TV ads it will adequately communicate the pop culture interpretation of the concept.

We have "Duck Dynasty," which is filmed not far from where I live. It's about a family which owns a duck call manufacturing company. Lacking hills in Louisiana, we retreat to the swamps. The stars of Duck Dynasty used to wear Izod shirts and Polo shorts, when they were members of their college fraternity. These days, they sport Z.Z. Top style beards and wear camouflage hunting gear. It makes for good television.
