Waiting barbos post about how imprisoning political opponents isn't anti-democratic.

There is really something we should be thankful for, and that's Trump's incredible ineptitude. It really will be his own undoing. We should count ourselves lucky he isn't actually smart or talented. We can tell not just by his own comments, his actions, but also by the people he hires. This is an interesting road we're on, let us hope that between Trump and his crop of GOP buffoons in Congress, the union survives intact.

Hey, folks -- the question on whether Putin is having his enemies murdered has been split to the main Political Discussion board.

Government knows DNC hacker was Russian intel officer: report

U.S. investigators have reportedly discovered that "Guccifer 2.0," the hacker who claimed credit for a breach of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) during the 2016 election, revealed himself as a Russian intelligence operative.

The Daily Beast reports that U.S. investigators identified the hacker as a Moscow-based Russian intelligence operative after the hacker failed to activate a virtual private networking (VPN) service meant to obscure the operative's location before logging on.

Looks like another indictment is forthcoming. Roger Stone is screwed.

It is probably premature to say that Roger Stone will be indicted over this. His obvious defense will be that he just did not know. He believed that Guccifer was a private individual. He is a very accomplished liar. Much smoother and more in control of his narrative than his erratic buddy, Donald Trump. And it is far more likely that he knew exactly what he was doing and how illegal it was when he did it. Trump just doesn't seem to understand or care about what the law is, feeling that he can always find a way to get around legal obstacles. Stone is a lawyer and a very experienced political operative. Mueller will not find Stone to be an easy nut to crack.

Agreed. Though I do think Stone is the type of self-serving, double-dealing scumbag that would definitely be Mueller’s “deep throat” if Mueller could find sufficient leverage over him. No offense to Felt. Hell, if Mueller could afford Stone’s price, Stone would spill.

I think this finding should be put in the larger context. Guccifer 2.0 conspiring with Stone was Russia conspiring with the Trump campaign which itself was part of the larger coordination and working together between the two. This new evidence shows what was already suspected that Guccifer 2.0 was a Russian intel officer. Previous apologetics had said he was a "lone hacker" and a Bulgarian. Those apologetics have now been destroyed. So now we have to look at this big picture.

The reporting I heard was that Stone claimed Guccifer 2.0 was Romanian. In any case, what makes this big news is that the intelligence officer inadvertently failed to activate his VPN tunnel before logging in once, and that exposed his Russian GRU IP address to Western intelligence. IOW, it went from being an unverified allegation to a smoking gun.

Yes, that's right.

Trump just showed that he always defers to Putin and does whatever he says by expelling 60 Russian diplomats.

Don't worry, Jason - he got Uncle Vlad's blessing for that. Vlad still prefers to keep his puppet vs. some unknown quantity, and didn't want Cheato's opposition to the collective decision of 20+ supposed allies to hasten Cheato's departure.

It's not like teh puppet imposed sanctions on more of Vlad's buddies, or did anything that would actually hurt his Dear Uncle. It's not like Vlad could respond in-kind to something like that, y'know.
You can rest easy.

After nearly the whole western world did and then with the following proviso:

"Today's actions make the United States safer by reducing Russia's ability to spy on Americans and to conduct covert operations that threaten America's national security. With these steps, the United States and our allies and partners make clear to Russia that its actions have consequences," she said. "The United States stands ready to cooperate to build a better relationship with Russia, but this can only happen with a change in the Russian government's behavior."

You nerve gassed a father and daughter without any concern for anyone else they may have come in contact with, but we're still ready to cooperate!

And, of course, there was the fact that the majority of those we kicked out were in one of the least worrisome places--Seattle--and then allegedly because:

Sanders also added that the closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle was tied to the consulate's "proximity to one of our submarine bases and Boeing." A senior administration official declined to say whether the US believes Russian agents were spying on US submarine bases.

Well, good, I'm glad Boeing and one submarine base is protected. Because that's what everyone is concerned about.

And then there's this:

Senior Trump administration officials said the actions were being taken not only as a direct response to that attack, but also to rebuke Russia's "steady drumbeat of destabilizing actions."

The actions came less than a week after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his reelection. Trump did not raise the nerve agent attack during the call, and senior administration officials said the two leaders have not spoken since.

But a senior administration official said the United States' retaliatory action was "absolutely" Trump's decision, saying it was "something he was involved in from the beginning and that he personally made after several meetings with his team last week."

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah declined to say Monday why Trump did not confront Putin about the attack during their call, saying only that they discussed "a range of issues" and that Trump secured "some positive interaction when it comes to nuclear arms."

"The President has made his position and the country's position pretty clear," Shah said, pointing to Monday's expulsions.

But not to Putin directly...on the phone call that he had with him...prior to making it clear with expulsions...

The expulsion still leaves dozens of Russian intelligence officers working under diplomatic cover in the US. A senior administration official said the US estimates more than 100 Russian intelligence officers are currently in the US.

But Boeing and Seattle? Are they safe? Oh, right. Phew. Yes.
