Yesterday, the Mormon Church’s President Russell M. Nelson gave a rousing speech at the religion’s 188th Semiannual General Conference in which he made clear no one should be using the phrase “the Mormon Church.” It’s a point he first shared back in August. But this time, he really meant it.
The church’s name “is not negotiable,” said the 94-year-old who took the reins of the 16 million-member faith in January. “When the savior clearly states what the name of his church should be, and even precedes his declaration with, ‘Thus shall my church be called,’ he is serious. And if we allow nicknames to be used and adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, he is offended.
Using common nicknames such as “Mormon church,” “LDS Church” or the “Church of the Latter-day Saints,” Nelson said, “… is a major victory for Satan.”
Damn… Who knew Satan loved the Mormon Church that much? They’re not messing around either. As of Friday, the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir is dead. It’s now calledThe Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. (Obviously.)
I suppose it’s still not the most controversial thing that happened at the Conference over the weekend.

But, when I was Mormon, I called myself Mormon, because that's what the Mormons around me did.

The announcers on the TV station that the Mormon Church owned would report "New policy announced by the Mormon Church today..."

And they also taught me various things to call the Roman Catholic Church...none of which were 'The Roman Catholic Church.'

Meh. All I can think of now is Sgt. Hulka. "Settle Down, Francis Mormon."

It's an old point of contention. The term was, after all, originally meant as a pejorative. "Mormon Church" is especially drawing of ire, since it implies that the church belongs to Mormon rather than, as in its proper name, the Big J. Mormon just (allegedly) wrote the book, he didn't found the church. The leadership, often strenuously engaged in trying to establish that Mormons are Christians at all, have not historically been fond of the confusion creative terminology can generate.

I don't mind the renaming of the choir, but if they think they are actually going to get people to stop calling themselves Mormons at this late date, they've got an object lesson in social inertia hurtling their way.

They know these things take time. They're hoping if they push on the point long enough and consistently enough then they'll eventually get people to stop calling themselves Mormons at some latter date.

Perhaps if they engrave all of their teachings on a metal plate and bury it, the next wave of invaders will rediscover them, and get it right the third time.

Thanks for the heads up! I will be making a point to use "Mormon Church" from now on when talking about the cult of Mormonism.

The Mormons are apocalyptic doomsdayers.

I'd have to fact check. I believe they have a large underground facility somewhere.

Well, so was 'Yankee.'

'Yankee Doodle' was an effort to insult people who proudly adopted the term.

For that matter, 'Big Bang' was coined as a dismissive term for the theory. Now that dismissiver is nowhere near as famous as the idea...

In his second major address during the faith’s 188th Semiannual General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson issued a stern, uncompromising lecture on his August edict — for members, media and others — to use the faith’s full name: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Good luck getting anybody to use that name.Yeah, sure God told him that. People will call them Mormons until heat death of the Universe.

Reminds me of African American, all 7 syllables of it. Let's see, CoJCoLDS has, what, 10 syllables? Yeah, that'll fly. I usually say LDS, because it's aerodynamic on the tongue, like KFC.

Let's split the difference. They don't want to be called Mormons and nobody else wants to use a long name. Let's just drop the second M and everyone will be happy.

Looks like two syllables to me. :D

(Hey, if we say it fast it sounds like "Catch colds". Maybe that's what the magic underwear is for...)

Indeed! That's exactly what happened in this case, too. But in religion as in many areas of life, those who hold power in a system sometimes have less of a sense of self-referential humor than the proletariat.
