I disagree. I do think Trump's election has caused bigots and radicals to be more open about their bullshit, but this polarization into loud, radical factions has been going on for at least ten years.

Since the 80s with Jerry Fallwell and rush limbaugh etc. They, with some coordinated help from Roger Ailes and others, created a campaign to turn "Liberal" into a dehumanizing slur. Newt Gingrich weaponized that campaign and got a little lucky break from the tragedies at Waco and Ruby Ridge. How Bush the lesser didn't fuck that coalition up is one of the great propaganda victories in the history of the world.

Agreed, but it's been much longer than ten years. What's changed is political correctness and perceptions of bigotry. It wasn't unusual for adults in the 1970s to tell "Polock" or "retard" jokes. Now it's considered bigotry and/or crude.

Seems like it's partly due to racism, partly due to fear of progressivism. Also, yes, there is large number of Trump supporters who voted for him because of jobs, but you could say that about practically every republican president.

I think the majority of it is fear. Look at the specific items being waved at the Right: "the wall", NAFTA, Russia is our friend and NATO is our enemy, the media. It's pure fear-mongering which appeals to the less-than-bright members of American society.

I assume (and only assume) is because some Americans are getting sick and tired of the ritualistic lip service from pro gun nuts every time a mass shooting occurs. All up, I'd say I've spent about 2-3 years in your country in my life and in my opinion, there shouldn't be a reenactment of the Song Tay raid happening every bloody fortnight. It's not unreasonable to look at restricting the weapons that create such an event, much in the same way seatbelt laws didn't magically come into effect the second cars were invented.

Terrorists hijack planes and commit mass murder once, and airplane travel in and around the US changes overnight with security measures that would have seemed excessive only months prior.
A kid falls off an overpass bridge and safety fences are erected all over the place immediately.
Some fuckwit was being an idiot with fireworks and suddenly, they're harder to purchase than a gun.
A lawsuit that should have been thrown out now requires Rowenta to add the disclaimer "Never iron clothes while they are being worn".

Americans are notorious for having the stigma of excessive restrictions when something occurs not involving firearms. But mass shootings are now more frequent than a monthly occurence and yet nothing can be done. You need those shooters that make you look like an extra for Black Hawk Down because, well, reasons.
