Francis Huang of the University of Missouri and Dewey Cornell of the University of Virginia used data from a school climate survey taken by over 150,000 students across Virginia. They looked at student responses to questions about bullying and teasing from 2015 and 2017. Their findings were published Wednesday in Educational Researcher, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.

In the 2017 responses, Huang and Cornell found higher rates of bullying and certain types of teasing in areas where voters favored Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

If I recall, there were a fair number of incidents of kids who showed support for trump being bullied, accosted, and beaten up shortly after the election. So I’m a bit reticent to assume the relationship that seems implied.

Wow. The partisanship is strong with you. I didn’t follow a ton of stuff, because a lot of the frothing-at-the-mouth political bullshit out there just exhausts me. I just remember a few cases, that seemed legit at the time. But hey, maybe those middle schoolers are just making shit up, right?

Clearly, if they hate the same person you do, they’re totally honest and upstanding young people...but if they like the person you hate, they’ve got martyr complexes and are liars who can’t be believed.

The article implies nothing. If you read the article, it reports on that finding. There is no insinuation about the targets or bullies because, as almost everyone agrees, bullying in school is bad.

Seems to me it works both ways. Both sides pretty much hate each other, and behave badly. Remember the guy in Georgia who had a MAGA hat on, and the clerk wouldn't sell him some vaping products? That wasn't school yard age stuff, but in a sense, it was a case of adult bullying.

The article seems kinda pointless. One could make an argument that there were a lot of Obama supporters in high violent crime urban areas (Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, etc). Does that mean Obama made them violent in some way?

That depends on whether crime increased or not, which is what we're seeing with the bullying. It's not that subtle of a difference if one actually reads the first paragraph of the linked article.

I didn't think this needed explanation. Typically the target of bullying are the weak and poverty stricken. The bullies are typically athletic, popular, and affluent.

The 'article' doesn't do any of that shit, but doesn't prevent you from arriving at a bias - if so inclined. Whether the bullies feel victimized or vindicated by Trump is irrelevant to the article and the broader study in general. It concludes only that there is a correlation between Trump-carried districts and increased hostility.

Again, you imply the relationship. Not the article. None of the kids in the study were old enough to vote and "Hey nerd! Nice clothes - do you shop at Target?!?" is about as apolitical as it gets. I seriously doubt that bullies poll their victims for political affiliation prior to attack.

However, since you bring up the anecdotal 'fair number of incidents' statistic, I would think it is extremely difficult for the minority ideology to successfully bully a majority of like-minded individuals. So if Trump supporters are being bullied more frequently, I would expect that to happen more often in districts that democrats took during the election. It does not stand to reason that the minority democrat districts are successfully bullying majority republican districts unless you also concede lack of unity in the republican party... Or Gerrymandering by republicans.

Lighten up, Emily! While it's not hard to imagine little tiny trumpsuckers being bullied and mocked, in the adult world, bullying and mockery are territory that has been marked out and vigorously defended by one fat orange shitgibbon. Either way, such behavior is more prevalent where said shitgibbon was the preferred candidate. But as I noted above, Democrats are MEAN!
