Thinking this through.... Trump gets impeached, but has dug up dirt on Biden. So if Biden wins the nomination, he's got a good chance of falling to whoever replaces Trump in running for the presidency. Warren is the other likely choice. She's also got a lot of baggage from the Pocahontas thing. I think the two front runners are the two weakest in the general election against a new nominee from the right. Third would be Bernie. I think he could win, but he does face the "socialist" bogeyman.

I think there is a pretty good chance that if Trump gets impeached, there will be another Republican in the whitehouse in 2020. If he doesn't get impeached, I think you've got a better chance of taking it.

But at the same time, it would be a feel good moment to see him impeached and held accountable for something finally.

But if he's getting impeached FOR trying to dig up dirt on Biden, will anyone listen?
If Biden turns out to have shot someone on 5th Avenue, but the way it was found out was to commit a felony, that kinda hampers the effectiveness. Whoever ends up with the Repub nomination may not want to touch that at all.
He'll be wanting to distance himself from Trump as much as possible.

The GOP has one minor issue. You said, what if Trump is impeached. If he is removed from office, that means the GOP voted for his removal. And the only reason the GOP back Trump is his cult of personality can lift the party a little or crush it a lot. And the GOP will be seriously wounded if Trump bites back, even from prison. Millions of Americans (mostly men) want to have Trump's baby. The GOP "betraying" him with impeachment would be devastating.

And if the GOP impeached Trump, that means he was pretty damn guilty, so guilty they had to do it. And that won't help with the Independents as they'll likely remember who shielded Trump after the Mueller Report.

Of course, the other question to ask is if you understand the difference between being "impeached" and being "convicted in an impeachment trial in the Senate". Also, if convicted, the Senate would have to say Trump couldn't hold office again, in order to keep him from running for President as an Independent.

Trump isn't going to prison. I wish he were for any of his many crimes, but he won't. If it appears he will be convicted on impeachment charges, he will have some kind of medical emergency that will 'force' him to resign.

It is to be hoped that he takes Pence down as well. I'd love to see Pelosi as POTUS for a year or so, even if I am not certain how that would position the parties for the 2020 elections.

NY State. Trump has burned every bridge in the state of New York. He'll need to move to Epstein's 'special' ranch for protection.

The only thing better than Trump in prison would be Pelosi as President, but I've got to think any deal that is made with the GOP to give Trump and Pence the boot, with require a specific people to be replaced as VP, elevated to President and then another person named as VP. And it won't be Pelosi. Maybe Garland finally gets his day. :D

He'll be wanting to distance himself from Trump as much as possible.

You can distance yourself completely from Trump and still use what he has uncovered against Biden. You can even vote for the impeachment. They can run a Republican who was never a Trump supporter. Once Trump is removed, this turns on Biden. Especially if the allegation against Biden is credible on the facts themselves. Same goes for Warren. You don't need immature shouts of "Pocahontas" to realize that Warren did a bad thing and to see her political ambitions frustrated by it.

Trump is the big bad, but once he is removed from the picture, other bads will look worse.

So, to some, Pocahontasgate (BTW, isn't T's use of Pocahontas offensive to these folks? Guess not) could be disqualifying, but the GOP's love affair and complete obeisance to Trump's unprecedented regime of lies, racism, delusion, libel, lies, profanity, bribery, profiteering, lies, witness tampering, obstructing justice, inviting election hacking, lies, defamation of the press, defiance of Congress, bad spelling, lies, and lies -- they'll slide through with that? They'll attract enough indie votes to push their guy over the line? That's like a death wish for the country.

I think Warren has a chance of beating Trump in an election. But a weaker chance than the others running for the Donocrats except for Biden and maybe Williamson (or maybe not).

But this thread isnt about beating Trump. It's about beating a new nominee after Trump is impeached or doesn't run again. And that Republican doesn't have to be a supporter of Trump's.

I don't think the situation would be any different, because Republicans generally support all the same things as Trump. The differences are too slight to require a change of strategy on the part of Democrats.

In substance yes. In style no. Mitt Romney would have done damage as president, but he wouldn't be stupid enough to get caught in shady dealings or be proud of them like Trump is. I have zero doubt that other presidents have done what they are attempting to impeach Trump for, but they were all smart enough to hide it or do it with subtly.

Nah, she didn’t benefit professionally for claiming NA heritage (which, in the US is not the same thing as being Native American). That’s just shit spread by anti progressives who don’t like women very much.

What does it have to do with being a woman???
You tell me.

Absolutely nothing. But it is you who made the claim.

Also, Warren is considerably less progressive and more establishment than Bernie.

Bernie has his electibility issue with being shouty and calling himself a "socialist". That's more of a nothing burger.

Biden in the mean time. Does anyone actually support him other than because he is the expected one? He is like Hillary all over again.

Trump won't be impeached. He would resign before the vote, and then the Dems will get all the blame for it. This will free the GOP to nominate someone that isn't as scary to moderates and economic conservatives, while still getting all the Trump voters who will vote for any GOP candidate out of spite against the Dems.

IOW, Trump leaving office before 2020 will increase the odds that the GOP wins the White House.

Interesting take... what is it about Trump's words and behavior thus far that makes you think he would ever resign?

Um, impeachment just kicks him out of office. Doesn't send anyone to jail.
AFTER impeachment, he's subject to federal and state indictments. They can argue precedence and send him to jails and jails. He can even be convicted in state court while he's serving federal time, and the judge can decide if his sentences are run concurrently or sequentially...

Isn't there a Sci Fi/Fantasy forum for stuff like this?

Taking this seriously though, i.e.thinking it through. If there is dirt on Biden, he doesn't get the nomination. If the Pocahontas thing is really a thing, she doesn't get the nomination. The only "socialist" bogeyman only terrorizes the folks who would never vote for a dem in the first. On the Republican side place, no one associated with the Trump administration has a chance. Any Republican that does step is already so far behind, there is no chance of winning .

Bernie has electability issues because of everything he is, including pretty darn old for a sitting POTUS. His age is a very serious issue, as age is for Biden. I used to think that age was a serious impediment to Warren's potential presidency but she seems to be holding up extremely well on the campaign trail. I think it's an issue but not as big a one.

Biden is seen as electable by a bunch of people because he's old school. He represents a return to normalcy, and is a more known factor. Plus, he was with Obama for 8 years so some of that aura still sits on his shoulders.

Bernie seems to appeal most to younger adults who, ironically (which is what that generation thinks they are all about: their grasp of irony) support grumpy grandpa while simultaneously holding some pretty nasty beliefs and feelings about Boomers.

Warren appeals to women who have been around a block or at least half way around a block or two.

It's pretty telling that (as far as I have heard) Obama hasn't come right out in support of Biden. I think he realizes the winds have shifted enough, and he'll just endorse whoever gets the nod.

I would love to know who Obama really wants to win, though.
