Shuttlesworth

Right-wing evangelist Jonathan Shuttlesworth has no time for “loser” pastors who are canceling services because of the coronavirus, saying they should instead be holding mass gatherings to demonstrate the power of their faith.

I don't HOPE he gets the Virus. I don't wish anyone get the virus. it puts others at risk. But when this guy EITHER contracts CORVID-19, or is caught taking every step CDC advises and photoshopping believers into his services, then i will probably smile. Just a bit. In the corners of my mouth.

Agreed -- much like those asshats in Kentuck, West Virginee, etc, who insist on handling poisonous sarpints in church. So many contenders for the Darwin Award.

I read a story on the news a few days ago, wish I could find it, showing statistics that Older (at risk) Republicans who watch FOX are far less likely to believe that C-19 is a threat and are far less likely to modify their activities to protect themselves. The story focused on a Sr Home in Florida with an unusually skewed population, like 2-1 republican, where large gatherings are still taking place, packed dance calls, close contact among large groups of seniors is still the norm.

All because the assholes at FOX and Trump are telling them that all is OK. FOX and Trump should be tried and convicted of second degree murder.

I don't hope people like this who help to spread the virus get the virus. I hope they die a much more immediate and certain death.

Although, if there was a way for them to get the virus without anyone else being put at risk, and have them slowly die on air for all their fans and Covid-deniers to see, then that would be ideal.

:consternation1:

Ok, purely devil's advocate here so let's explore a bit because I'm actually sick and don't know yet whether or not its Covid or just a flu (and likely won't be able to find out any time soon since testing is still reserved for the critical and higher risk in our state). And this is not regarding the asshat in the OP, but...we all die. We are all literally born terminal. That is the only objective truth there is to our existence. We are all terminal the second the sperm hits the ovum.

So here we are in a situation where--supposedly--80-85% will have little to no reaction to the virus; 10-15% will have more severe reactions, but will likely survive; 5-10% will die and the vast majority of them will be elderly/those already "at death's door" so to speak.

Assuming it's not a deliberate act (i.e., conspiracy theories) and is a natural pathogen sweeping through our species in a fashion that happens as part of the natural "order" of things and at least appears to be effecting primarily the already weakest among us, is that necessarily cause for any of our extreme measures?

Setting aside for the moment (again, devil's advocate) emotional responses--so, let's be sociopaths for a second--even in the most dire estimates I've seen--1 million dead--that's out of 7.5 billion. If we did nothing and even 1 Billion died, we'd still have 6.5 Billion left. And those 6.5 Billion would all be immune to the virus, presumably, and not, say, partially immune due to avoiding the virus rather than heading straight into it and passing out the other side.

Yes, I know I sound like other usual suspects on the alt-right tip, but fuck it, I'm bored senseless in self quarantine and already thinking about mortality and the like, so why not?

A vaccine, after all, is a small dose of a virus deliberately injected for the express purpose of shockjacking the body's immune system into attacking the weakened virus to develop antibodies against it, correct? If I'm not mistaken, this is the English thinking right now on the issue, so maybe not "devil's advocate" so much as weird British sociopathic practicality?

Anyway, regardless and considering the fact that we are all, once again, literally born terminal, then why shouldn't we let nature run its course and thin the herd? We do exactly that to any other animal on the planet (when we arrogantly determine it's time to thin their encroachment onto "our" land) and the natural precedent for it is literally written into our DNA.

So when something like this happens, is it actually irresponsible to intervene in the way we are evidently doing now? Even arrogant? And emotionally based, rather than in the best interest of the species as a whole?

Yes, it means a LOT of people dead. But, again, we are born terminal, so is that a legitimate or simply arbitrary emotional hill to make one's stand upon? All 7.5 billion of us alive today will be dead tomorrow no question about it, so does the number of dead matter in regard to an analysis of a natural pathogen spreading through our species? Again, sociopaths for just a second. We can get into all of the emotional angles later.

From a species-survival sense--and purely for the sake of shear, quarantined boredom--the hit is statistically minimal (even on the billion death level) and the end result, if we did nothing at all and just kept about our lives (other than, of course, massive end of life care and the horrific logistics of burying the dead and the like), is STILL going to be the end result for all of us given enough time.

So what does it matter if a comparatively small percentage of us die tomorrow or ten days from now or ten years from now?

Hee-ewe, I need a drink and some sunshine.

And emotionally based, rather than in the best interest of the species as a whole?
why pretend those are two different things?
One of our advantages as a species is the old people, with memories and the ability yo pass on information when no longer able to wrestle mammoths or bite the heads off sharks. Lore, skills, tricks, pro-tips passed on by generations.

We evolved by having old people at the fire, so we evolved To Treasure old people at our fire. Which is why we tend to invest resources into our old, and sick. We feel good about the decision because we've been selected for that.

So, if a million get sick, we (by which i mean most humans, not sociopaths) will try to save them, much as we can. With that in mind, protecting them limits the number of resources they will demand in the next months.
And extending their health for now increases the chances of a vaccine, and a cure, further protecting our own resources, so that we won't beggar ourselves.

Because we won't get anywhere if we start with the emotional appeal?

So, if a million get sick, we (by which i mean most humans, not sociopaths) will try to save them, much as we can.

Right, but is that the best way to approach pandemics?

Ok, there you go. Practical species win in the "do something" column.

It's a bit terrifying that just days after I played "devil's advocate" the actual devil showed up and suggested far worse (i.e., deliberately sacrificing your own family so that Republicans wouldn't have to open their wallets).

Is there a mass Darwin Award?

Thanks for that. I'm 70 and enjoying the best years of my life. I spent my entire adulthood primarily caring for older adults. I valued their wisdom and the memories they shared with me. I valued the interesting conversations we had, and the appreciation they gave me for my advocacy. When one died, it was often the end of their suffering but it was also a loss to their children and grandchildren that couldn't be replaced. In many cultures, the oldest are the most valuable members of the tribe. The youngest have less to offer but nobody is suggesting that they should be sacrificed for the greater good. All ages of people have a purpose in society. It's disgusting that some are suggesting that the oldest should simply die. Fuck. I earned the right to live a happy, healthy old age. I'm not giving that up without a fight. :glare:

I'm tired of people whining about having to stay home. Fuck that. Past generations were forced to go to war for the country, or make sacrifices during the Great Depression or endure extreme racism and slavery. People survived drought, famine and other extreme suffering. All we are being asked to do is sit on the couch. Poor pitiful little whiners. Read a book, or write a book, or call a relative or an old friend. Watch some good moves. Try out a new recipe. Clean out your closets or organize your cabinets. Call an old friend or family member and ask them about their past struggles, but please stop the fucking poor, poor pitiful me song. This solitude could be a chance for some self reflection.

We're all gonna die but in the meantime, let's savor life to the best of our ability.

I heard that Dolly Parton says this virus is a lesson from a god. Perhaps her brain is shrunken to the point of senility. Much as I enjoy the girl I still believe Lincoln was right when he admonished folks to keep their mouths shut for good reason. Such an admonishment, obviously, may not be appreciated or even understood when Dunning Kruger is in the room.

I got one of those President Trump coronavirus cards in the mail too. Briefly looked at it because I knew that I having followed the real news for so long on this that there would be nothing I didn't already know or know better. I found it offensive that something with Trump's name on it would come onto my property. Trump is such a lying Blowhard.

President SCROTUS' downplaying, misinformation and lies are going to kill more people in the next few months than the 9/11 terrorists could have dreamed of.

Please stop insulting blowhards.
