An awful decision;

Edinburgh University has renamed its David Hume Tower over the philosopher's "comments on matters of race".
The building, which will be used as a student study space this academic year, will now be known as 40 George Square.
An online petition claiming David Hume "wrote racist epithets" and calling for the building to be renamed has been signed more than 1,700 times.
The university said Hume's comments on race, "though not uncommon at the time, rightly cause distress today."The decision was announced in a statement on the work of its equality and diversity committee and its race equality and anti-racist sub-committee. It said its work had been "energised" since the death in the US of George Floyd and campaigning by the Black Lives Matter movement.

There is a statue of David Hume on the Royal Mile outside the sheriff court. It's not particularly good statue of Hume but I wonder if that will be next. This really is an awful decision because Scottish history is not properly taught in Scottish schools and Hume will now be brushed out of history completely.

Just as the American Civil War is being brushed out of history. [/s]

Sounds like the students are actually studying history, and not just the whitewashed parts.

Sounds like the students are actually studying history, and not just the whitewashed parts.

They aren't really studying history. They are merely applying the already idiotic "cancel culture" to a superficial understanding of a historical figure. They are rejecting all the accomplishments of David Hume because he is not 100% in line with 21st century standards of political correctness.

I agree with TSwizzle. The students are ridiculous, but the admits caving to them are even more vile because they should know better.

He's not being cancelled. They're just changing the name of a building.

Hume was almost charged with heresy in his own day so cut the cancel culture crap. It's nothing new.

I read that Martin Luther king was a serial adulterer, and possibly worse. Down with Martin Luther King and all his statues! Rename all 1000 streets in the US named after him! Cleanse and purify!

We need to have a talk about Black Fragility.

“Generally speaking, the errors in religion are dangerous; those in philosophy only ridiculous.”

"I am apt to suspect the negroes to be naturally inferior to the whites. There scarcely ever was a civilized nation of that complexion nor even any individual eminent either in action or speculation."

Where is the lie?

David Hume could out-consume
Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel

This sounds like the first half of a funny quatrain.

ETA:

David Hume could out-consume
Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel;
He could pound an ox and still eat lox
Spread lavishly on a bagel.

And/or it might be the bones of a good limerick.

I wonder why anyone would think that a structure's name should never change.

There is no reason to think anyone here thinks that.
Yes, there is.
The complaints are about the reasonableness of this particular change, given the motivation for it.
Riiiight, because in this world at this time, such a change is monumental with important consequences for ______.

While I would not change the name, IMO this is no big deal regardless of the motivation.

No, there is no good reason to think that. And I said nothing about its being monumental. Rather, the complaints are about the reasonableness of this particular change, given the motivation for it, not about its having monumental consequences - just bad ones, for bad reasons.

That is your opinion,
And I said nothing about its being monumental. Rather, the complaints are about the reasonableness of this particular change, given the motivation for it, not about its having monumental consequences - just bad ones, for bad reasons.
In the grand scheme of things, this is nothing. So, someone must feel it is sufficiently important to whine about it.

Whether the reasons are good, mediocre or bad is a matter of opinion.

On the first point, you just made up the idea that people "would think that a structure's name should never change" out of nothing.

On the second one, no, it's not a matter of opinion, as moral matters are not a matter of opinion. Someone is mistaken.

There are people who claim moral matters are a matter of opinion. But whether a tower's name should be changed hardly seems a moral matter to me.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion whether the stated reasons are bad, but no one is required to accept your analysis/opinion as valid.
