January 6 Hearings Live

Yeah, that was my concern too. The Capitol Police didn’t open fire because the crowd was unarmed. Supposedly. Doesn’t make them less dangerous though.

A couple of days ago the Capitol Police didn't even "know" the crowd was coming. Their ability to remain ignorant is quite Trumpish.
Tom
Reports are that CPD received numerous warnings and that the CPD chief told Maxine Waters (IIRC) that they were fully prepared. He resigned very quickly. It makes me wonder if he is actually a Trumper on the inside and specifically stood down full force protection.
If poor inadequate planning is a possible reasons for something, malice shouldn't be leapt to as a motive.

I tend to agree. It would all be over now if a couple hundred of them had died on the Capitol steps in a hail of lead.
Sure, there would still be some whimpering, but there would be clarity about the fact that trying to storm the capitol is not a viable option.

If they are clearly intent on harm the right of self defense is never denied. That would have been my Rubicon. I certainly wouldn't want to create a bunch of martyrs, that would only make things worse.

I'd try that with a military base, but I'm having the thought that being unarmed wouldn't stop getting shot at.

Seems too obvious in a "caught red handed" sort of way. I'd be more inclined to think he was provided inaccurate or incomplete intel from federal sources, especially if that info is filtered through the trump toadies installed last November at DoD. I think they are key here.

Waters says the CPD Chief lied to her about force preparedness. They supposedly had a very long conversation that went into great detail.

Yeah, that's not on the list.

The closest i ever came to firing my weapon was a demonstration by Committee for Nuclear Disarmament trying to mob the tender. I had a shotgun at the fo'c'sle.
But the guys NEXT to me had a five-inch fire hose. They let the demonstrators climb a ways up the anchor chain, then put the hose on steady-stream and blasted them back into the Loch.
But if such non-lethal "lesser means" fail, or are not available, there's nothing differentiating armed and unarmed intruders.

Trump supporters and their ilk have talked grand stories for over a decade. The worst they managed was occupying a BLM site in Oregon and printing up letterhead.

The odd thing in the end was, as I noted elsewhere, they marched up the stairs as an insurrection for liberty, and occupied the Capitol like drunk teens who snuck into a high school at night. I'm grateful the violence was limited, but it seems odd how some wanted to do worse, but seemed to be outnumbered by Mock Warriors who left stupid messages on envelopes about not backing down... before backing down and leaving the Capitol Building.

So it seems the DC Police were ready for what would become of the people while they were in the building, but not ready for the people as they were when they were outside it. Maybe their Liberty Viagra just wore off (pretty much in all seriousness).

There’s A Straight Line From Charlottesville To The Capitol - "Wednesday’s attempted coup is just the natural extension of a presidency spent giving insurgents permission to come inside, kick their feet up, and tear down democracy."

Like expressing sympathy for neo-Nazis despite having a son-in-law who lost relatives to the original Nazis. ...

For a quick tutorial on the rise of despotic leaders look no further than this presentation by author David King from 2017 at the Politics and Prose bookstore in DC, "The Trial of Adolf Hitler: The Beer Hall Putsch and the Rise of the Nazi Party". Apparently the only book yet published in English about what occurred in 1924, or in German either. C-SPAN has been running it several times today. About an hour.

Fascinating. Thank-you for the link.

Nazis Wore Swastikas, Auschwitz Shirts To Capitol Riot
Among the many different factions of white supremacist groups — from the Proud Boys to to Confederate flag-wavers to QAnon — who stormed the Capitol this week, there were also Nazis. Carrying swastika flags and wearing shirts that said things like “Camp Auschwitz STAFF, work brings freedom” and “6MWE” (which stands for “six million weren’t enough,” a reference to the number of Jewish people killed in the Holocaust), the Nazis made themselves right at home in the Capitol, sporting paraphernalia meant to stoke fear and send a clear message about what they represent: hate and violence.

Americans Call for Full Investigation of GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert for Tweeting Pelosi’s Position During Riots

Lauren Boebert is the newly elected Congresswoman from Colorado. January 6th was her third day in Congress. In case you do not know her, this gives you an idea. From the Washington Post:

One of the newest members of Congress, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), has kicked off the session with a viral digital ad proclaiming her right to carry a Glock on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and in the streets of Washington.

If you think she is just a gun nut and not a full MAGA’d Trumper (not that there’s much division between the two), here is Lauren Boebert’s tweet from the morning of January 6th.

Remember first it’s 2021.

Many people want to know if she was communicating to the mob that they needed to look elsewhere, that Pelosi had been removed. It is an odd comment following right on the heels of saying that they are locked in. Someone could interpret it as “this is how bad it is, they just took the Speaker out!” but it’s coming from someone who is in favor of the “Revolution” and Pelosi wasn’t the only one taken out, most of leadership on both sides were taken out.

Now we know why Boebert wanted to carry a gun in the building.

You are supposed to use the minimal force necessary to stop the intrusion, but you still have to stop it.

75 year old dem rep Bonnie Watson Coleman has covid after being locked in on Wednesday with maskless Republicans, so the casualty count could go up.

So they caught some of the Capitol Police fifth columnists.

I just read an article that said he wore a MAGA hat, but I did not read the part about taking rioters around. Can you cite that part from a news article or official release? I'd really like to know this.

Yeah, but antifa is just as bad if not worse. I heard antifa is organizing armed insurrections in every major city on the 20th. Obviously, antifa is a major threat to national security! Trump fans are just passionate and justifiably angry, not threatening at all, or stupid.

This possibility is probably why Trump claimed that he was going to lead the march on Capitol Hill, but then ducked into a limousine and watched it on TV in his bunker.
Tom

I don't think the golf cart aficionado lame duck could waddle that far, even if he wanted to.

He should divorce the racist seditionist, lying Magette; but for devout Catholics, I don't think that's sufficient grounds. Perhaps he could ask the Pope for a dispensation for a divorce or annulment, or perhaps the Pope could inform Mrs. Thomas that she must repent of her sins and iniquitous ways. However, she could plead anti-abortion as a reason for her stance.

Note to self, before committing my next felony, be sure to line up a spokesman who knew me on the boats. Fellow MTs, former officers, that Marine, Captain Rattlesnake. Anyone but a close relative. Don't want the anchorman saying, "And for the latest on the Masked Vigilante, we go to Pete, who is outside the federal penitentiary with his mommy...."
