Team Trump quietly launches new social media platform
GETTR will be the newest MAGA venture in this space. It’s being led by Trump’s former spokesman, Jason Miller.

Former President Donald Trump’s team quietly launched a new social media platform on Thursday, billing it as an alternative to Big Tech sites.

But the debut immediately ran into confusion about whether it was the former president’s long-promised bid to offer his legions of followers their own social media haven or merely the next attempt to build a MAGA-alternative to the main platforms.

The site, called GETTR, advertised its mission statement as “fighting cancel culture, promoting common sense, defending free speech, challenging social media monopolies, and creating a true marketplace of ideas.” The app is currently in beta form and will be officially launched on July 4 at 10a.m.

Trump’s former spokesman, Jason Miller, is leading the platform, he confirmed via text. Former Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh is involved as a consultant on the app.

Trump’s involvement with the project is unclear as is whether or not he will set up an account on GETTR and use it.

It was being propped up by Amazon. Amazon wasn't too impressed with Parler being the go-to platform for Jan 6 and asked Parler to review their TOU and enforcement policy. Parler gave lip service so Amazon wished Parler the best of luck and informed them that they wanted nothing to do with an app that helps insurrection and removed the app from their servers. Parler has since been unable to find anyone willing to prop them up.

There's always Gab I suppose, but Trump can't make any money off that.
 
Whether you love them or hate them, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tik-Tok all have memorable names. Even Parler almost looks like a word.

What the F**k is with "GETTR"? I know there's no chance a professional name designer would get involved — Trump doesn't pay his bills — but couldn't they do better than this on their own? Any handful of average liberals could brainstorm and come up with a name in less than an hour. Is the right now completely devoid of 100+-IQ folk?

You know, this whole "right wingers trying to launch a conservative social media platform" reminds me of a staff meeting at a Top 40 radio station where I worked back in the late 80s. We were pretty good at playing the hits. Prince. Madonna. Huey Lewis & The News. The general manager went on this tangent about the playlist (and generally speaking, the general manager should have no say in this) and insisted that if we just played some old Elton John album cuts from back in the 70s, the listeners would appreciate them. That was the music he liked, and he insisted that other people would like it, too...if given the chance. He was responsible for forcing us to play "Incense and Peppermints" by The Strawberry Alarm Clock on occasion. Was that a good decision? No. We were a current-based Top 40.

This reminds me of that. An older, out-of-touch guy with money trying to foist his views on the audience with no clue as to what "the kids today" want.

The people behind these right wing social media companies seem to fundamentally misunderstand what makes social media platforms successful. Instead of playing the hits, they want to play the records that they want to hear. Gettr, or Parler, or whatever else is out there isn't going to eclipse Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram because the latter are playing the hits, while the former are playing Incense and Peppermints.

[off-topic] I haven't heard "Incense and Peppermints" since it came out when I was a Freshman in college. (Yes, I'm Middle-aged ... and maybe should even use the "O" word.) Yet I remembered the song just from the name.

... Downloading it to my Oldies flashdrive as I type ...

{another off topic}, back when I was one of those 'kids', I didn't really care for that Top 40 station. I preferred the non-syndicated station that also aired the King Biscuit Flower Hour in the late 1970's and early 1980's...
 
I just heard this morning that when they published the site they left the source code viewable. I'm sure that makes hackers happy.

It's described as having been "quietly launched" by Trump's former spokesman Jason Miller, a charitable way of describing something so workaday and generic it's not clear if it's ready to be noticed. There are spelling errors in its App Store listing. Trump doesn't seem to have an account there, but Hitler does, a fact I know because the first time I opened it it recommended that I follow him.

I wouldn't follow that Hitler account until you see the red check mark showing the account has been confirmed. Could be a fake account. You have to be careful, even in a Nazi safe space created by Trump, who you can trust to protect you, but you just never know in this wild west cancel culture.
 
Well Getter be hacked by the GRU? Will Getter cost $$$$? Will Gettr be full of tracking, and invasive privacy malpractices? Will hordes of Antifa activists join to monitor Gettr and send copies of dangerous posts to the FBI? Will doxxing be common experiences for Gettr users?
