Jamaal Bowman: Democrat calls for Congress to pass another Covid relief package - CNNPolitics

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a progressive freshman Democrat from New York, is calling on Congress to pass another Covid-19 relief package as the country marks 800,000 deaths from the virus and the threat of the Omicron variant only grows.
In a letter to House Democratic leadership, shared first with CNN, Bowman laid out why he believes another Covid relief package is necessary.

"We now lost 800,000 American lives to COVID 19 — double the number we lost in World War 2. This number is shocking, and cannot continue to climb without another federal intervention," Bowman writes. "Our defense budget is ($)770 billion a year but we are not doing enough to defend ourselves against a global pandemic that is killing us directly and indirectly through the mental health crisis it has created."

Bowman outlines that this new emergency supplemental should specifically address how the pandemic is affecting children and their mental health by including a bereavement fund for children who lost a primary or secondary caregiver due to Covid-related reasons, the cancellation of federal student loans, the cancellation of housing-related debt for past due rent and mortgage payments, the reinstatement of an eviction moratorium and foreclosure moratorium, and renewed funding in education among other provisions.

"The pandemic has and will continue to change us for years to come. We need to take action now, and the surest way to do that in Congress is to exercise our power of the purse and direct much-needed funds to our children, families, and communities," he adds.

It may be hard to get that past the likes of Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema.

Looks like the cleanup is underway. Unfortunately, my shirtcuff math says it will take about ten years at this rate to reduce the presence of trumpsuckers at the polls by 5%. Most of the places where cheato prevails, he prevails by way more than 5%.
But hey - any progress is progress.

The essential nature of humor is that it's a defense mechanism. So humor is appropriate for any uncomfortable topic (at least hypothetically) and, humor requires a victim.

Grown-up humor requires an appropriate victim. Someone deserving. This is why the White-Faced Clown in most any comedy act is a pompous prat. It'snot funny to hit a little girl in a wheelchair with a bat, but hitting a banker with a cream pie is hilarious.

Someone who politicizes and rejects 5th grade science and leaves themselves wide open to the Plague, they have gone and victimized themselves. They are appropriate subjects for humor in this scary pandemic.

Deserve to die? Not a choice i can make. Trying hard to die? That's a choice they made. And the sooner they manage it, the less threat they are to the immunocompromised, their confined space coworkers, nurses, doctors,and anyone else in the area that thought they might want to visit an ER so as not to die of a heart attack, car crash, knife-sharpening incidemnt, or some other condition that wasn't automatically lethal three years ago.

The concept is Schadenfreude. It's not really nice, but it's a very human emotional response. Schadenfreude is a word from German that doesn't even translate well into "English". I'm not sure if there is any equivalent in a romance language. Probably, but I don't know it.

It's the pleasant emotion one feels when someone you dislike gets their comeuppance. In particular, when someone who has caused harm in some way suffers from the harm they caused.

It's complicated. I don't think it "nice", by which I mean rationally moral. But it's real.

But they did not get their comeuppance. Comeuppance is a deserved punishment ( https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/comeuppance, https://www.thefreedictionary.com/comeuppance).
However, dying of covid is not a punishment, so it cannot be their comeuppance. And if it were a punishment - i.e., someone infected them with COV-SARS-2 with intent to kill), it would not be deserved.

I agree it's real, but I tend to disagree about the first part, at least in the sense I do not see anything irrational or immoral in feeling good when watching people who behaved immorally get the punishment they deserve. That it's limited in the description above to someone 'you dislike' is a bit of a problem because it raises the issue of whether you dislike them for good reasons, but regardless, I'd say it's okay to feel good when watching wrongdoers getting their just deserts. I'm just saying this is one of those cases.
