I do believe you're right. The best we can hope for is that he is deemed an unfit (won't win) candidate by about half of the GQP leadershit, creating a tremendous kerfuffle and rift in the Party, discombobulating their fall campaigns and causing them to lose seats in November.
Other than that, and probably more likely to succeed, we can hope that Cheato gets hit by lightning or is Epsteined by his handlers or something.
It's interesting (to me, but I'm easily amused) to speculate about what happens if he keels over from whatever without warning. Would there be one massive winner-take-all cage match for Trump's political inheritance? Who if anyone will make the rules?
They do have an impressive roster of practiced, polished liars, but will the old guard prevail over the Matty & Marge show in the House? Will the Senate

I can see a Trump supporter choosing a guilty verdict. A full blown MAGA Trump ass kisser would hopefully be excluded from the jury pool.

Random people are in the pool that day, then there's a filtering process.
Like, ask if they donated money to Trump, ask if they've taken a selfie in a restricted building, ask who won the 2020 election, ask if they're vaccinated, ask if they'd take a booster in order to sit in the jury box....

I imagine it'll be like the J6-ers. Someone in their life will be willing to inform the court that 'Juror #3 is 'MAGAmyDAY' on Twitter,' if the prosecutor's research department missed it.
 
I think this will ultimately hamstring the Trump Org from doing future business. They already rely too much on outside US loans. The stuff coming out now is going to make it hard for other companies to want to work for them. The Trump financial legacy could be dying. None of his children have his charisma and none of them are smart enough to make this house of cards stay up, forget about actually making something.

So while Trump will likely never pay for his financial crimes, his crimes might keep him and his family from continuing on.

He owns monopolies, but has acquired so much debt to potentially wipe it all out.

On Tuesday evening, former President Donald J. Trump, rattled by news that his longtime accountants had declared that years of his financial statements were not reliable, issued a statement of self-defense with new claims about his wealth.

These, too, did not add up.

In a rambling emailed message, Mr. Trump referred to a “June 30, 2014 Statement of Financial Condition” prepared by the accounting firm, Mazars USA, showing that the year before his first presidential run his net worth had been $5.8 billion. But that is not what he said back then.

When he declared his candidacy in 2015, he produced what he called his “Summary of Net Worth as of June 30, 2014” with a very different number: $8.7 billion. A month later, he upped the ante, releasing a statement pronouncing that his “net worth is in excess of TEN BILLION DOLLARS.”

The shape-shifting valuations, even in the face of mounting legal peril with Mazars’ decision to sever ties and disavow its past financial statements, get to the core of a problem for Mr. Trump. He has spent a lifetime bending reality to his will, often making it up as he went along, inventing facts and figures to support his needs in the moment. In fact, in his Tuesday email he suggested the intangible value of the “Trump brand” was actually worth an extra $3 billion in 2014.

Good question. They were willing to take the money but something changed their mind about continuing to take the money. They're obviously worried about being charged themselves and are starting their defense.

A New York state judge on Thursday ordered that former President Donald Trump and his two eldest children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, testify under oath within 21 days, rejecting arguments by attorneys for the Trumps who sought to block or stay subpoenas from New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

The decision by Justice Arthur Engoron of the New York State Supreme Court came after two hours of at-times heated oral arguments, in which the Trumps' attorneys argued that James' probe constituted selective enforcement, "viewpoint discrimination" and could improperly mix the findings of a civil investigation with a separate criminal case which James is also a party to.

"In the final analysis," Justice Engoron wrote, "a State Attorney General commences investigating a business entity, uncovers copious evidence of possible financial fraud, and wants to question, under oath, several of the entities' principals, including its namesake. She has the clear right to do so."

The Trumps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"We're not responsible for assessing the value of his holdings. ALL we do is stack the numbers HE GIVES US, then calculate his taxes, payroll, that sort of shit. It's HIS numbers that are the problem. Frankly, we're as shocked as you...."
 
I think i know what's next for Trump. Knives.

Thanked, dismissed, their photo taken as they depart (talking heads for CNN discussing if they look shaken, for FOX discussing how smartly Ivanka dressed for the fishing expedition.
Trump enters the room.
And throws the lot of them under the bus.
He'll have a deal before he sits down, probably before the day.
It's always about him, and anyone else has started distancing themselves. All that's left are the Gang of Three.
 
The judge said it "would be a blatant dereliction of duty" for the AG not to investigate when dismissing the Trump attorney's claim that it was a personal vendetta. There must be some really incriminating documents.

ETA And yes, I understand that this is the civil case so technically "incriminating" doesn't apply.

Trump's lawyers tried to argue that Trump's long-time accounting firm quitting was somehow a vindication of Trump.

But the judge had none of that, calling it "audacious" and "preposterous". Orwellian? George Orwell's 1984 featured a totalitarian state that liked to make words mean the opposite of their usual meanings: War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. Humpty Dumpty? In "Through the Looking Glass", the sequel to "Alice in Wonderland", that character says "When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less."
