Threats to prevent Russian athletes from competing.

Damn, Poland banned Russian classical music. Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich,....
I was right.
You were right? When?
You said the 'west' bans people for having opinions that don't match the official narrative. I'm pretty sure Tchaikovsky's opinion on the invasion of Ukraine has ALMOST no part in why certain performances have been cancelled.

I think it is unfortunate that these athletes have worked so hard, through difficult circumstances to be barred from the event. However, I feel a lot worse for the people who have lost family or are being terrorized in an egregious violation of international law that has seen thousands killed.

Well, to be fair, Russia has banned living for thousands of Ukrainians.

Yes, banning Tchaikovsky is silly as he is probably the best thing that ever happened to music, one of the best composers ever. But wailing about banning a Russian composer's music, while Russians are killing thousands of civilians in an illegal invasion... to kill imaginary Nazi leadership of Ukraine is quite damning really.

Gotta say, while I'm sympathetic to Ukrainians and Russia is acting like a bully, the rapid dehumanization and cancellation of anyone or thing Russian is embarrassing and stupid. We gotta lighten up.
So you would like to have your cake and eat it too.

Given your demonstrated propensity for misinformation, please provide a link. But assuming it is even true, how is it worse than the banishment of rationality and common decency in Russia?

On way to roil an autocracy is to rile up the citizenry. This particular action seems petty, but if the goal is to isolate Russia, every little bit helps.
I think it’s aimed at Russia’s pride. I think it’s a two edged sword. OTOH, I agree with the sentiment that we will only allow representatives from civilized nations to compete. Invading another sovereign nation is not the act of a civilized nation. Yes, I agree that this standard might logically be applied to my own country in certain circumstances.

Not a fan.

I don’t feel like the athletes should be punished for what their country is doing. Banning doped athletes can be argued on the merits, as can insisting that they don’t fly the Russian banner. But the talk about the Russian para athletes didn’t feel justified.

Thoughts?

On one hand I agree. Why should an individual athlete suffer for political nonsense that that they had no part in creating?

On the other hand, high level athletes are at risk of becoming pawns in geopolitical nonsense due to their position. Sorry, but that's how things are.
They're high profile representatives of whoever. This isn't a new issue.

So do the athletes, I believe.

I can well imagine that the athletes do.

But they've also got years of training and discipline and lost opportunities invested. I totally understand why they don't want their personal ambitions thwarted over something that they had no part in creating.

I can find one report that says a performer who supports Putin is disinvited from performing. For their support of Mad Vlad, not just for being Russian, or 'a non-citizen' whatever that meant.
Not the music. Maybe Barbos has a different link.
But the one comment on this report says, 'What's next, Tchaikovsky?' So maybe this is his report?
