I was a machinist back in the 70's early 80's. My father was a master machinist.

Wanted one of these when I was a kid. I now have two. First project is a small steam engine.

I see ads for these mini table saws. Being a gadget freek I want one but I have no idea what I would do with it.

How much does it cost for lathe at that scale BTW? Or for that matter a milling machine?

I would absolutely love to start cranking out some fun stuff!

$500 - $1000, depending on what it comes with. One little handle for the headstock was $43! Ebay has a lot of stuff. You can get a 7x14" for around $600. They are all made in China but are not bad.

Nice. I have wanted some small machine tools for making watch parts, but I also know that will require an index as well. I have it in my head to try constructing that antekythera mechanism floating around, but as a smaller steel clockwork rather than bronze. It would probably keep me busy for a good month or two planning out a mass production!

Best of luck on whatever you build and if you decide to beat me to it, please post plans!

Back in college, I had a summer job working in the machine shop of the physics building. They had two full time machinists working there who trained a bunch of us student lackeys on how to operate a milling machine and lathe (among other basic tools, like band saw, grinder, etc). We were making components for drift chambers for an uncoming high energy physics experiment at Fermilab. It was a blast. In my spare time, I made a brass bong behind the backs of the two machinists (really, really dumb thinking back on it now). I wish I had a full on machine shop of my own. Would be a great retirement hobby.

A steam engine would be a fun project. My uncle had a mini-steam engine toy (pre-built) that me and my cousin would play with. Recently, I got nostalgic about it and saw that Amazon sells a lot of these ( Example: Steam Engine Model kit), both complete and as a kit. I may buy one one of these days.
