California Doing California Things

At a minimum, it's inviting social censure of current people for the misbehavior of a completely different group of folks a century and a half ago.
A completely nonsensical scenario, with no evidence to support claims. "All I [Emily Lake] can think of" is not tangible evidence of whatever conspiracy theory comes into your head.

Uh huh.

What do you think is the PURPOSE of making companies publish if 150 years ago someone who worked there made money off of slavery?
It frees up and makes public knowledge that has been hidden behind propietary privilege until now.
For what PURPOSE? Why is this something that there is any need to make public in the first place?
I note that the specific case you propose there would fall outside the scope of the law. They are required to report on the company's use of chattel slavery and resources associated with it, not a personalized account of every individual who ever worked there.
It's a stupid law that serves only to increase racial conflict and tension. And don't be daft - use your brain and think about what the OUTCOME of this is going to be. Because it sure as fuck isn't going to be a bunch of people saying "oh, well, that's fine, no biggie". Don't pretend there's not a bigger political goal to this.

Then again, maybe you're a fan of struggle sessions.

Bullshit. If you think that won't happen, then you have your head in the sand. It's an easily foreseeable and extremely likely outcome. I would even go so far as to say it's the DESIRED outcome.

No one needs a reason not to censor information, especially not information about a particularly consequential period of national history.
It's not being censored right now. Instead, companies are being forced to go back more than 150 years and make public things that have no bearing on their current operations.

Seriously, Poli, are you just itching for a race war or something?

If you had evidence, you'd be citing it.
It's like you don't know how words work.

Hm. So you aren't arguing that these companies don't have ties to slavery. You are arguing thay they do, but we should help them cover up that connection, because you are afraid there will be a "riot" if people find out about it? Do you mean a real riot, with burning cars and so forth, or just a metaphorical riot, like the Beave's imaginary "pitchforks and torches"?

I know exactly how words work. Probability is a science. Your horror scenarios are nonsensical bullshit you made up of the top of your head, but want us to use as the basis of law. Your hypotheticals "feel likely" to you, but you can give no one else any reason to think they are actually likely.

 You're never gonna cool off from the P & T, thing are you?

Nobody is making a claim that any particular company has or doesn't have a connection to slavery, or knows and is "trying to cover it up". Not sure if you're playing dumb here or what.

Let's say your college told you (and all other professors) as a condition of employment to research your family history and document and post all past familial slavery connections on the door of your office. Would you welcome that? Would the research required be a productive use of your time? Do you think it would be a net positive or negative thing for you and prospective students reading it? What would you think of students who (naively, IMHO) decided it reflects badly on you in 2026 and decide to shun and shame you about it on social media? Do they have a valid point?

Not equivalent. A corporation I am not, nor do I have any sealed files that I'm hiding from the public about my geneaology. But if a student asked me about that, I would answer them seriously and honestly, not rail at them insanely about how they were trying to start a "race riot" by asking. I would assume that they had their reasons for wanting to know, and as a public employee I generally try to be as transparent as I can be about who I am and where I'm from and so forth.

Employer gets trickier, though. They really are not supposed to ask personal questions like that for any reason, and I suspect the union would have words.

Again, these aren't actually equivalent situations. But if that happened, I would not be trying to censor the speech of any student, even if they are using that voice in a way that's painful to me also. Presumably, they are also coming from a place of pain, and it isn't my job to police my students, their emotions, or their public expressions.

To take things to the level of a very concrete, relevant example, I'm the direct descendant of a man who almost certainly participated in the massacre at Sand Creek. He was, at any rate, a horse scout for the unit that committed it. If I had a Cheyenne student who, after learning that, did not want to finish one of my courses, I would understand. I didn't make my grandsire's decisions for him, but I can't pretend his decisions didn't affect my life, any more than the descendants of his probable victims can change how that event shaped theirs. It sucks to be on the receiving end of an ugly history, but only children and cowards try to erase history to soothe their feelings.

If "their" goal is to start a "race riot", why not just buy a billboard downtown that says "J.P. Morgan Chase used human beings as loan collateral. Are you okay with that?" There'd be no need for a legislative act, you could just do that. So why haven't "they"?

One of Gavin Newsom's greatest disappointments of the era unveils flying car

Elon Musk last night unveiled his first flying car, launching the Tesla Roadster with a spectacular demonstration. In a stunning clip, the vehicle goes up an upside down ramp before doing a flip and falling toward the ground – before the attitude-control and rear rocket thrusters activate and allow it to hover to safety, as the crowd roars. Musk declared the new vehicle is 'going to crush every track record that has ever existed', and claimed it would be available by 2028. He did caution, however, that 'this is not necessarily a safety-optimized car, but it takes the fun meter to 11 out of ten'.

We are governed by donkeys in California.

Because it sure as fuck isn't going to be a bunch of people saying "oh, well, that's fine, no biggie".
No, because most people are unaware that this law even exists, and they certainly won't be reading the hundreds of reports it generates.
That might be worse. So now companies have to make public that 150 years ago someone else associated with the company made money off of it, and the public now receiving this information doesn’t know their being forced to do so. Hmm, what could possibly go wrong.

The only plausible purpose is to invite censure of current employees and usher in some struggle sessions.

It doesn’t fucking matter if someone else more than five generations ago did something bad. It’s not “covering it up”. This is digging up dirt that is u related to ANYONE ALIVE TODAY for political posturing and to stir racial tension.

This is progressives using black people like pawns without any actual care or conscience. It’s hateful manipulation and intentionally divisive.

But hey, if you think inciting racial tension is great, well, I have opinions about your character.

What the fuck do you think the outcome of this will be? What benefit is there to the public? Or do you only care about how much political use progressives can make by increasing division?
